John Patrick Ruffo (born 8 March 1988) is an Australian singer, songwriter, dancer, actor, and television presenter best known for being a finalist on the third season of The X Factor Australia in 2011.

He came in third place in the competition and has since signed a recording deal with Sony Music Australia.

Ruffo won the twelfth season of Dancing with the Stars Australia in 2012.

On Top, his debut single, which was released in June 2012, debuted at number 14 on the ARIA Singles Chart and was designated platinum.

Chris Harrington starred in the Australian soap opera Home and Away for three years from 2013 to 2016.

Early life

Johnny Ruffo was born in Balcatta, a suburb of Perth, Western Australia, to parents Jill and Pascoe Ruffo. When Ruffo was three years old, his parents divorced. With his mother, he spent the majority of his youth in a tiny Homeswest unit. Ruffo began pursuing his dream of being a musician at the age of 12, following in the footsteps of his idol, Michael Jackson. He also taught himself how to play the guitar and piano and wrote his first song at the age of 14. Ruffo was educated at Balcatta Senior High School. He started as a concreter and jumped into the company thanks to his dad, who works in the industry. Supanova, an electropop band, appeared in Perth. Ruffo has also appeared around Perth.

In 2011, Ruffo appeared on The X Factor Australia's third season, singing Jay Sean's "Do You Remember" and receiving rave reviews. He eventually joined the live shows and was mentored by Guy Sebastian. Ruffo came third in the category on November 22, 2011, while fellow contestant Reece Mastin was named the winner.

On The X Factor, Ruffo performed the following songs:

Ruffo told News Limited on November 30th, 2011 that he had been given a major record label but whose name he wasn't allowed to reveal at the time. He also revealed that he had already recorded several new songs, claiming, "I've been in the studio recording some singles, but there are a few other tracks in Perth, so we can get the right one out for my first release." The songs are in my style, which is pop, R&B, and mainstream. Ruffo told Take 40 Australia in December 2011 that he had a duet with his X Factor mentor Guy Sebastian. On December 16, 2011, he co-hosted Nova's Fresh Hits with Gawndy. Ruffo performed at the Melbourne State Library on December 20, 2011 as part of the Optus Celebrity Carols campaign to raise funds for World Vision Australia.

Ruffo revealed on his official Twitter account in January 2012 that he was working on his debut album in New York City. On January 29, 29, 29, and 31, he was a supporting act for Reece Mastin's first headlining national tour in Adelaide. In March 2012, it was revealed that Ruffo had signed with Sony Music Australia. On the twelfth season of Dancing with the Stars, he became a celebrity contestant, and was partnered with professional dancer Luda Kroitor. Ruffo, a supporting act on One Direction's Australian leg of their Up All Night Tour, would have been released later this month. Ruffo was named the runner-up of Cleo magazine's 2012 Bachelor of the Year competition on April 18, 2012. He was a supporting act for New Kids on the Block and Backstreet Boys' Australian leg of their NKOTBSB Tour in May 2012.

"On Top" was Ruffo's debut single on June 15, 2012. The song debuted at number 14 on the ARIA Singles Chart and was named platinum by the Australian Recording Industry Association (ARIA), denoting shipments of 70,000 copies. On June 17, Ruffo was announced as the winner of Dancing with the Stars. The Youth Off The Streets charity received his winnings from the show. Ruffo appeared on the fourth season of The X Factor as the host of the digital live streaming television show The X Factor. On October 19, 2012, his second single "Take It Home" was released and debuted at number 20 on the ARIA Singles Chart.

In April 2013, Ruffo made his acting debut in Home and Away, Australia's television soap opera Home and Away as Chris Harrington. He had intended to appear in 16 episodes, but that was later extended. Ruffo's third single "Untouchable" was released on July 12, 2013, and he debuted at number 39 on the ARIA Singles Chart.

Ruffo's fourth album "She Got It O" was released in May 2015. It was launched independently but it didn't chart. Ruffo unveiled a Christmas single on December 11, 2015, a Ruffo cover of "White Christmas." Ruffo had left Home and Away to pursue new opportunities, according to Channel 7's Twitter account on April 27th. "I've loved my time in Summer Bay," Ruffo said. Chris's resume is expected to grow in popularity, and I hope fans will continue to enjoy his television time." Ruffo's last episode of Home and Away screened on September 22, 2016. Ruffo will be seen in the Channel Nine miniseries House of Bond about former WA businessman Alan Bond, which will be shot in Perth and Sydney on May 10, 2016. On April 24 and 25, 2017, House of Bonds aired on Sunday and 25th April 2017.

On August 10, 2017, Ruffo had undergone surgery to remove a brain tumor, which was discovered after he went to the hospital suffering from a migraine. Fans were encouraged to "keep him in their thoughts" by Ruffo's social media pages. Ruffo revealed that he had been diagnosed with brain cancer and that aggressive therapy would be initiated as soon as possible.

Ruffo told Fitzy & Wippa that he was "currently free of cancer" during a radio interview in May. "Broken Glass" was Ruffo's first new single in four years in June 2019. "This song is obviously the most vulnerable song I've ever written," Ruffo told Channel 7. It's very personal for me. It's almost about my experiences in the last two to three years, as well as being down and out – not necessarily about cancer but also about losing a loved one. Ruffo's brain cancer had resurfaced in November 2020, he said on Instagram.

Ruffo's cancer is "now stable" in June 2021, according to Ruffo. Ruffo's single "Let's Get Lost" inspired The Morning Show is inspired by Ruffo's claim that you should "pack up the car and get lost, but let's not get away from it all for a while."

Johnny said in September 2022 that he wanted to make it until Christmas.
