Utada Hikaru (born January 19, 1983), who has also performed with Hikaru Utada, is a Japanese-American singer-songwriter and producer.

Utada's father, a native of Japan, began writing music and lyrics at an early age, and often traveled to Tokyo as a result of her father's work.

A recording contract with Toshiba-EMI was eventually agreed and Utada's stage name "Cubic U" debuted her English-language debut album Precious in early 1998, but it was a commercial failure.

First Love, her Japanese-language debut, was a huge influence on R&B and dance-pop in the following year and became a smash hit.

The album, which was boosted by the huge success of singles "Automatic," "Time Will Tell," and "Movin' On Without You," the album sold two million copies in its first week in Japan, and went on to sell six million more throughout the remainder of 1999.

First Love became the country's best-selling album of all time. Distance was released in early 2001 and spawned Utada's biggest hit songs, "Addicted to You," "Wait & See (Risk)" and "Can You Keep a Secret?" she says. "We've sold million-sellers," the company announced.

Personal life

Utada is bilingual and fluently speaks both English and Japanese. Kazuaki Kiriya, a photographer and film producer who had produced several of her music videos, married her on September 7, 2002. The couple declared their separation on March 2, 2007, citing personal changes and a lack of contact as a result of their careers.

Keiko Fuji, Utada's mother, died of apparent suicide by leaping from the thirteenth floor of a 28-story condo building in Shinjuku, Tokyo, on August 22, 2013.

Utada revealed plans to marry an Italian man on February 3, 2014, urging followers and journalists to view their personal lives from a "respectable distance" since he was not in the entertainment industry. Ex-husband Kazuaki Kiriya congratulated her on her new marriage on the same day. Utada and fiancé Francesco Calianno wrote a note on her official website on February 10, 2014, describing how they met each other while Calianno was a bartender in a London hotel and asking for anonymity. Life and career

Hikaru Utada was born in New York City as the sole child of Teruzane Utada, a Japanese record producer, and his partner Junko, an enka singer performing under the stage name Keiko Fuji. Utada began writing songs and lyrics at the age of ten.

She began making recordings with Keiko, releasing songs under the name "U3" in 1996, when she first started a solo project as Cubic U.

In 1996, the first Cubic U single, "I'll Be Stronger," was released in Japan as a limited pressing. Utada unveiled "Close to You" a cover of the Carpenters' song, which will be released next year. The following year, she debuted it on her debut album Precious. Both the album and single failed to chart on Oricon in Japan.

In the summer of 1998, Utada moved to Tokyo and later the American School in Japan, before finding a long-term employment with Toshiba-EMI. The first success came from Japanese FM radio. She was at the forefront of a new generation of singer-songwriters in Japan, breaking with the previously popular idol artists. "Automatic/Time Will Tell" and "Movin' On Without You," leading up to the introduction of her Japanese debut album First Love at the age of 15. Over two million copies of "Automatic/Time Will Tell" were sold. First Love was boosted by these singles' success in Japan alone, with an additional 3 million overseas, bringing the total number to over 7 million units, the country's biggest selling album in recent history. The album contained the single "First Love," which peaked at number two on the charts. Utada was ranked 5th on Tokio Hot 100 Airplay's Top 100 Artists of the 20th Century by the station and its listeners by the end of the year.

Utada released Distance, the follow-up to two years, with first-week sales of 3 million units. "Addicted to You," "Time Limit"," "For You," "Wait & See (Risk), and "Can You Keep a Secret" are all based on the strength of its singles. Distance was the year's best-selling album, with 4.47 million copies selling in Japan alone. "Addicted to You" became her best-selling single, grossing a million copies in its first week, the first week for a female solo artist, and sitting at the top of the charts for two weeks in a row. "Wait & Seek: Risk" and "Can You Keep a Secret?" On Oricon's list of the Top-Selling Singles from January 1, 1999, to April 24, 2006, both were ranked at number 6 and number 10. The female victim of a murder trial in Ikeda, Osaka, was also featured on Utada's "Final Distance," which was dedicated to the female victim of a murder trial.

For the action-comedy film Rush Hour 2, Utada recorded the song "Blow My Whistle" in 2001. It was a joint effort with American rapper Foxy Brown and was co-written by Utada, Pharrell Williams, and Chad Hugo. The song appears on Def Jam's Rush Hour 2 compilation, which debuted on both the Billboard 200 and Number 1 in the Top Soundtracks. Although the majority of her work was self-produced, Blow My Whistle was made by the Neptunes.

Utada joined Columbia University in New York City in 2001. She was inactive for less than a year.

"Traveling," "Hikari," and "Sakura Drops/Letters" are among the songs on the charts leading up to Deep River, Utada's third album; all three songs appeared on top of the charts. She underwent surgery before being diagnosed with a benign ovarian tumor prior to the album's debut. She returned to Deep River and immediately went on promotional tours after recovering.

In its first week, Deep River sold 2.35 million copies. According to Oricon, sales eventually surpassed 3.6 million, making Utada the first artist or group in Japanese music history to have three consecutive albums reach the three-million mark. It was her third straight album to debut No. 1 on Oricon's Yearly Albums chart and her eighth best-selling album of all time in Japan.

Utada's promotional and personal life schedules became more popular in 2003, following her marriage and a deal with Island Records in the United States to release a "proper" full-English debut album. For 2003, "Colors" was her only single appearance on television.

Utada's first singles compilation album Utada Hikaru Single Collection Vol. 1 was released on March 31, 2004. It was the country's best-selling album of 2004, making her the only solo or group artist to reach number one four times on the yearly charts. It was the first compilation album to reach number one on the yearly charts in six years, and it was the first compilation album to reach number one in twenty-six years by a female artist. Despite its popularity, the album received little buzz and no new information; moreover, it remained longer on the Oricon Albums chart than any other Uta release to date (over two years). The album's sales in Japan reached 2.58 million units, making it the country's 34th best-selling album ever. "Dareka no Negai ga Kanau Koro," the year's longest selling singles chart for two weeks and sold 365,000 units by the end, a month later. Utada returned to New York in mid-2004 and started working on a recording deal with Island Def Jam Music Group. Exodus, her first album in North American English-language, debuted on October 5, 2004, under the recently announced stage name "Utada." On September 9, a special booklet was published in Japan and its cardboard slipcase was presented. "I don't think it's the music that worries about," she said in an MTV interview: "I don't think it's the music that worries about." Well, that I look very different, and there aren't any completely Asian people [who are popular singers in the United States] right now." She also noted that the album was not intended to be a pandered to followers but that she kept making it anyway. In Japan's first-week sales, Exodus became her fourth straight launch to debut at number one and sold 500,000 copies. American sales were not as lucrative: it reached number 160 in the US Billboard 200 chart, and peaked at number 5 in the Heatseekers chart, despite being ranked no. 1 in the Heatseekers chart. In early August 2004, "Easy Breezy" was released as the lead single, and "Devil Inside" was followed six weeks later. Utada appeared on the front page of Interview magazine's June 2005 issue.

At the end of June 2005, "Exodus '04" was released and featured remixes from Scumfrog, Richard Vission, JJ Flores, and Peter Bailey. Mercury released two remixes for "You Make Me Want to Be a Man" on the original album, titled "You Make Me Want to Be a Man" and "You Make Me Want to Be a Man" (Junior Jack Mix) in the United Kingdom. According to Oricon's annual readers poll, Utada was named "#1 Favorite Artist of 2004" by the end of the year.

In the United Kingdom, Exodus' fourth single, "You Make Me Want to Be a Man," was first released in October 2005. "Devil Inside" became a hit in the United States and topped the Billboard Hot Dance/Club Airplay charts. Both the Exodus album and the "You Make Me Want to Be a Man" single were released in the United Kingdom, with different artwork from the US and Japanese versions.

Utada returned to Tokyo and resurrecting the Japanese music scene a year after the introduction of Exodus. "Be My Last" (number 1), "Debai ga Kanau Koro"), "Be My Last" (number 1), "Be My Last" (number 2), and "Keep Tryin" - leading up to the debut of a new album, Ultra Blue). To advertise the album, the digital single "This Is Love" was released, selling 1,000,000 copies.

In the first week, Ultra Blue sold 517 copies, down from the previous album's, although it did not yet top the Oricon Daily, Weekly, and Monthly charts. In the first week, Ultra Blue, Utada's fifth consecutive chart-topping Japanese album (excluding the English-language Exodus) sold over 500,000 copies (excluding the English-language Exodus). Ultra Blue had sold over one million copies worldwide and four million digital ringtones, making it one of EMI's top-selling albums of the year, according to a study on July 13. She travelled to New York to speak with designers and executives about recording her second English album at the same time. "Do You" by American R&B artist Ne-Yo's 2007 album "What to You" featured Utada and was released in Japan on November 21 (the song appeared on Ne-Yo's "best of" album, which was later released in Japan and November 2009 in the United States).

The British EMI Group, which had had a 55% interest in Toshiba EMI since before Utada's debut in Japan, acquired the remaining 45% interest from the Japanese Toshiba Corporation, making Toshiba EMI a wholly owned subsidiary of the London-based record label. Toshiba EMI later changed its name to EMI Music Japan to reflect Toshiba's loss of the market. On August 29, 2007, Utada's first single under the name "Beautiful World"/"Kiss & Cry" was released as a double A-side single, and it also reached top-one on the Oricon Daily Chart. Beautiful World was used as the theme tune for Evangelion 1.0: You Are (Not) Alone, the 2007 film revival of the anime Neon Genesis Evangelion, while Neon Genesis Evangelion was used in a series of advertisements for Nissin Foods' Freedom Project, which was first available as a digital download on May 31, 2007.

After a two-year absence from the top position, the single "Flavor of Life" became the best seller of 2007, and Oricon's annual readers poll revealed "Number 1 Favorite Artist of 2007" for the year 2007. She recorded 12 million digital ringtones and songs in 2007, with "Flavor of Life" bringing in 7.5 million, the second-highest song of any country this year. The single was featured as the main song in Hana yori Dango Returns' second season of television drama Hana yori Dango Returns.

Heart Station, Utada's fifth studio album, was released on March 19, 2008, becoming her fifth consecutive Japanese studio album. Despite the fact that it had the lowest first week sales for her career, with 480,081 copies sold, this album became the first Japanese album to do so since the 2004 compilation album. By the Royal Institute of British shipments, it had been given a one million certificate for shipments. Heart Station became Japan's best-selling digital format album on the iTunes 2008 yearly album charts, as well as the highest-selling original studio album by a solo female artist on the Oricon Yearly Chart.

For the second year in a row and the third time overall, Utada was named "Number 1 Favorite Artist of 2008" by Oricon's annual readers poll, which was also the second consecutive year.

Information leaked onto the internet on December 16, 2008, that Utada's newest English-language single, "Come Back to Me," will be announced on airplay in U.S. Rhythmic/Crossover and Mainstream formats on February 9, 2009 and 10, 2009 respectively, according to Island Records. This Is the One, her second English album, was released in Japan on March 14, 2009, in Japan, and in the United States on May 12, 2009. This Is the One debuted in Japan on March 13, 2009, the day it was announced in Japan, but it was not her first album to top the weekly chart since Precious. Utada appeared on New York City radio station Z-100, the country's biggest pop radio station, and was given a live on-air interview on the station's Elvis Duran Morning Show, a milestone that might lead to a promotional tour through the album's international physical release on May 12. You Can't Advance (Not) Advance is a website that shares information about the second Evangelion film, Evangelion: 2.0 You Can (Not) Advance. The single was released on June 27, 2009, and it is a remix of a previous single, "Beautiful World." "Beautiful World PLANiTb Acoustica Mix-" is the single.

At Studio Coast, Tokyo, Utada sung a duet of Let It Snow with pop singer Mika on November 30, 2009.

Only on Amazon.com, Zune Marketplace, and the United States iTunes Store in support of This Is the One and a forthcoming tour, Utada's Dirty Desire remixes were released on December 21, 2009. The tour, Utada, was her first concert tour outside of Japan and included eight cities in the United States and two dates in London, England. The tickets for the second London show went on sale on November 13, and the tickets were apparently sold out in just five hours.

Utada announced a long absence in a personal blog post on August 9, 2010. "I don't know if it will be 2 years or 5 years." She described a desire to have a broader range of experiences and grow as an individual after being primarily focused on music from age 15 to 27, and talked about growing as a person.

However, she also announced that some new music would be announced before the hiatus began. A compilation album was revealed shortly after the publication: Utada Hikaru Single Collection Vol. 1 (Suzo) Vol. 2, with a release date of November 24, 2010. This collection will feature all of Utada's Japanese singles, from "Dareka no Negai ga Kanau Koro" to "Prisoner of Love" on disc one, as well as an additional EP featuring five new songs. A DVD containing the promotional video for Goodbye Happiness would be included in all first-press edition pre-orders, according to a post.

On September 27, 2010, Utada introduced "Hymne à l'amour (Ai no Anthem), which became a commercial tie-in for Pepsi NEX. It was confirmed online at Tower Records Japan and several other websites in late October that an English-language "best of album" titled Utada the Best" would be available in Japan on the same day as Utada Single Collection Vol. 114. The 24th of November is the second in a series of tests. Utada responded to the news by saying, "I know that if it doesn't sell, I'm the one who will get hurt," the singer says, but "I don't want my fans to pay for something that my heart isn't interested in." And, "The Utada the Best is entirely against my will." I wish that my followers would not have to buy it. There is no new stuff in it."

Utada later revealed a single "Goodbye Happiness" with its accompanying PV, which appeared on November 9, 2010. The song was also selected as the Recochoku Chaku-Uta TV commercial theme tune. She appeared on "London City," with English rapper Devlin, on his first studio album, Bud, Sweat and Beers, which was also released on November 1.

On November 8, 2010, EMI Japan announced on its Web site that the company had signed a worldwide recording contract with Utada, as well as a statement that all of her future work, regardless of language, would be released under one name: Hikaru Utada. Utada, her Western stage name, had been used to describe her retirement.

Utada Hikaru Single Collection Vol. 1's first-week sales. According to Oricon, there were 23,000 units in total. On January 15, 2011, Japanese television station NHK premiered Utada Hikaru (, "What I Am"), a documentary starring studio performances ("Show Me Love (Not a Dream) and "Goodbye Happiness"), as well as a few clips from the Wild Life performances. The British EMI group was split up and sold to several organisations in September 2012. EMI Music Japan, Utada's record company, was transferred to Universal Music Japan on April 1, 2013 and renamed to EMI Records Japan. The album's name, track list, and cover were announced on August 8, 2016. The album's name was revealed as Fantôme (French: 'ghost'), which featured eight new songs as well as the previous three singles for a track listing totaling eleven tracks. Following its launch on September 28, Fantôme was both commercially and economically profitable. It debuted at the top of the Oricon Albums Chart and remained there for four weeks, the most of any Uta studio album since First Love. At the Japan Record Awards, it was named Album of the Year and received glowing feedback from media outlets. Utada has been dubbed a featured artist on the album's first single, "Lonely One," and it was released on January 17, 2018 via streaming services.

Utada would produce "Chicai" ("Oath"), along with the English version, "Don't Think Twice," for international audiences on February 10, 2018. It was revealed that "Chikai" would be included in her seventh Japanese album, which was scheduled to be out in 2018. In Sheena Ringo's tribute album, Adam to Eve no Ringo, a replica of Ringo's "Marunouchi Sadistic," which they both covered one year before in Obukuro's radio show.

As an image song, a new single by Utada, "Hatsukoi," was announced in the drama Hana Nochi Hare Hanadan Next Season" on April 17, 2018. After "Flavor of Life" in 2007, she performed it in the second song she performed to the Hana Yori Dango drama series. On May 30, the single was released. "Play a Love Song" was the Suntory Water SWITCH&SPARKLE's theme song on Monday and was confirmed on the next day.

Hatsukoi, Utada's seventh Japanese album, was released on June 27. For a total of 12 songs, it contained all previous six singles. Hikaru Utada Laughter in the Dark Tour 2018 was a domestic concert tour run between November 6 and December 9, her 20th anniversary of birth, on a total of 12 dates at six separate venues. The album debuted at number one in Oricon's physical and digital weekly charts, with total sales totaling over 242,000.

Utada would debut "Face My Fears" as the theme tune for Kingdom Hearts III on September 28, it was announced. Skrillex and Poo Bear, an American musician, co-produced the album. On January 18, 2019, "Face My Fears" was the first CD single to be released on the format in eleven years since her 2008 single "Prisoner of Love" was released. This was also her first appearance with original English songs since This Is the One in 2009. The song debuted at number 98 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs chart, peaking at number nine.

The Laughter in the Dark tour film by Utada was released worldwide on Netflix on June 26, 2019, with English subtitles personally translated by the singer.

"Roman to Soroban LDN ver" was released by Utada's singer-songwriter Sheena Ringo on November 1, 2019. In English, the Sun and the Moon are both Sun and Moon. It was included in Sheena's best-of album Apple of Universal Gravity. "Roman to Soroban TYO ver. vs. Soroban TYO ver." On November 25, "The Unaffordable" was on display. "Shonen Jidai," Utada's first single in over a year, was released on November 27, 2019. On the Inoue Yosue Tribute album, it appears to be track number five. On May 8, 2020, Utada launched "Time," the NTV drama Bishoku Tantei Goro's theme song. The single "Darenimo Iwanai" was released on May 29 as the soundtrack for a Suntory mineral water campaign, with Utada appearing in the commercial.

Utada revealed that work on both new Japanese and English songs for the forthcoming album, as well as English versions of the Japanese songs, in the second episode of Instagram's live series Jitaku Kakuri-chu no Hikaru Kike!

It was announced on December 3, 2020, that Takeru Sato and Hikari Mitsushima would appear in a Netflix based on Utada's songs "First Love" and "Hatsukoi." In 2022, the streaming series titled First Love Hatsukoi is expected to be released.

'One Last Kiss, Utada's official website, announced a new single titled "One Last Kiss" as the film's theme tune on December 25, 2020: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the performance and the film were postponed "until further notice." With the introduction of the film, it was announced on March 8, 2021.

The 2021 anime To Your Eternity, which was released in April, was based on Utada's theme "Pink Blood." In November, she appeared in "Kimini Muchuuu" for TBS drama series Saiai.

Bad Mode, Utada's eleventh studio album, was released on January 19, 2022. Bad Mode is her first bilingual album. Skrillex and Poo Bear, A. G. Cook, and Sam Shepherd collaborated on her album. The album debuted on Japan's Oricon and Billboard charts, putting it at number one.

Utada appeared on Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival's main stage in April 16, 2022, her first appearance in a music festival in the United States under the 88rising block. As part of the 88rising EP Head in the Clouds Forever, she sang a short setlist of old songs, including “Simple and Clean,” “Automatic,” “First Love,” “First Love,” and a new song, T.

The concert "Hikaru Uta Live Sessions from Air Studios" was released on Netflix on June 9, 2022.
