Early life

Elliot John Gleave, a boy from Hammersmith, was born on the 20th of June 1982 at West London Hospital in Hammersmith, to Elaine (Johnston) and Michael Gleave. In a 2012 interview with The Guardian, he was diagnosed with Asperger syndrome, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and obsessive compulsive disorder. "I was diagnosed with Asperger's when I was younger," he said. I was awestruck with the numbers, I had a photographic memory, and I hated reading fiction, favouring books about nature and history. All signs of mild autism have been described. In the first track to his fourth album The Evolution of Man, he mentioned this. "Come Taste the Rainbow" was his first track. Elise is his younger brother. He then enrolled at ADT College (now Ashcroft Technology Academy) in Putney. In interviews, Wu-Tang Clan and Snoop Dogg's album were largely due to his exposure to hip-hop, and the fact that he was not particularly good at any sports, he began rapping to fit in socially. When he was 12 years old, his first encounter with rapping was at a house party in Shepherd's Bush. He (he) sprinted home after being completely devastated in the war, "completely killed a useless wanker and a war broke out," in his own words.

After graduating in 2003, Gleave went on to study BA Media Arts at Royal Holloway, University of London. It was during this period that Joseph Gardner, AKA Rusher, the singer who would continue to work with during his time as a member of All The Chats imprint, and later on Mike Skinner's label The Beats that followed. In the audio booth of the university film department, Gleave and Gardner created a concept album; this concept album contained the track "A Pointless Song," to be Example's first white-label vinyl release.
