Caroline Polachek Life

Caroline Elizabeth Polachek (born June 20, 1985) is an American musician, singer-songwriter and record producer.

Raised in Connecticut, Polachek co-founded the indie pop band Chairlift while studying at the University of Colorado.

The duo emerged from the late-2000s Brooklyn music scene with the sleeper hit "Bruises". During her time in the band, she worked on the solo projects Ramona Lisa and CEP, before embarking on a career under her own name after Chairlift's disbandment in 2017.

Her debut studio album, Pang (2019), blended art pop styles with electronic production and was released to critical acclaim.

Polachek has worked extensively with other artists, collaborating with Blood Orange, SBTRKT and Charli XCX, and penning material for Beyoncé ("No Angel"), Travis Scott, and Superfruit.

Early life

Polachek was born in Manhattan, New York City, on June 20, 1985, to James Montel Polachek (1944-2020), a financial markets analyst and trained classical musician, and Elizabeth Allan. Her great-grandfather, Arthur Polachek, was a Jewish confectioner from the Slovak village of Lastomír. Her family relocated to Tokyo, Japan, where she lived between the ages of one and six, and later settled in Greenwich, Connecticut, where Polachek started singing choir in the third grade. She was a synth player from a young age as her father gifted her a Yamaha keyboard to dissuade her from being disruptive on the piano. Her parents divorced in 1994.

Polachek recounts her early exposure to traditional Japanese songs and anime themes as being influential on her musical education: "[Japanese singing] [is] a lot of minor and pentatonic [tonality], with really angular melodies that I think really stuck in my subconscious." She rode horses growing up: "I learned a lot about rhythm and about voice from that. Like, you don't always have full control of your instrument. You have to trust it, you have to give it space, you have to know when to push, give it air." When Polachek was a "hyperactive kid,” her divorced parents would play Enya at their houses in order to calm her senses.

As a teenager, Polachek began traveling to New York to attend concerts, which were a mix of post-hardcore emo, DIY punk and jazz shows. Mike Patton once personally walked her into a show at the Knitting Factory when her fake ID was rejected. She played in a couple of bands in high school and college.

Personal life

Polachek's 2015 marriage to artist Ian Drennan was extensively photographed by Vogue magazine. They divorced in 2017. In 2020, Polachek's father died from COVID-19.

Caroline Polachek Career

Career

After a sophomore year at the University of Colorado, Polachek formed the band Chairlift with musician Aaron Pfenning. The band reformed in New York City, where Polachek studied art at New York University, and Patrick Wimberly joined them in early 2007, the band's first EP, Daylight Savings, and their debut album Does You Inspire You.

Polachek and Wimberly continued as a pair to write and produce their 2012 full-length album Something With Dan Carey and Alan Moulder. In addition, she produced "Amanaemonesia" and "I Belong in Your Arms" on the record's music videos.

In 2008, Polachek formed a Girl Crisis choir with 12 other female singers, including members of Au Revoir Simone and Class Actress. A year ago, the modular band arranged and released two covers, including songs by Black Sabbath, Nirvana, Leonard Cohen, the Bangles, and Ace of Base.

"We went on YouTube to find a video of Justin Bieber's "Never Let You Go" in 2010. We continued to make a'sgin' (anagram of the word'sing'), an original song written specifically to fit into someone else's video on mute. "Vivolent Sensation Descends" was also recorded during the same year. In 2011, she shot and directed the band's song "It Couldn't Be Perplexed." In 2013, she worked with Elbrecht on the EP Gloss Coma 001, which featured the single "I.V." "Aid Dreams" is a film by Aided by the author.

Polachek appeared on Ice Choir's "Everything Is Spoilt by Use" in 2012; she also produced and edited the song's music video. In 2013, and "Holy Will" in 2018, Polachek collaborated with Blood Orange on the tracks "Chamakay" and "Holy Will" respectively. "No Angel," she co-wrote and co-produced in 2013, Beyoncé's critically acclaimed fifth studio album Beyoncé, was released in 2013. Beyoncé's nomination for Album of the Year at the 57th ceremony was due to her production and engineering work on the album.

In 2013, Polachek began performing sets under the moniker Ramona Lisa. The name derives from a former pseudonym Polachek, which was used on Facebook. Ramona Lisa, named Arcadia, was her debut self-produced album in February 2014. The album was described as "pastoral electronic music," according to Polachek.

During an artistic residency at the Villa Medici in Rome, Italy, Polachek began writing the book. "I wanted this kind of electronic music to sound as natural as what she was seeing," she explained in a Pitchfork interview. I don't think any of the MIDI systems are particularly new; a number of the MIDI controllers have been around for 15 years, but the arrangements make them seem less innovative and more mysterious." The record was made entirely on Polachek's notebook, without the use of instruments or external microphones, except to capture field recordings of the sounds she heard in her surroundings. During Chairlift's world tour, she sang directly into her computer's built-in microphone, making the most out of hotel closets, quiet airport gates, and spare dressing rooms. Tim Barber, a photographer from New York, was in charge of the album art.

Polachek developed and produced instrumental scores for designers Proenza Schouler and Tess Giberson in early 2014, who would be seen on runways and promotional videos. She won a live performance piece by artist India Menuez and Hayden Dunham at Brooklyn's SIGNAL gallery in April. Polachek produced "HappyOkay," a ballet performance video directed by Elena Parasco and produced by House of Makers and Last Hour in October. Peter Lueng of the Dutch National Ballet, the Netherlands' biggest dance company, was choreographed, and Harrison Ball, Joseph Gordon, and Megan LeCrone of New York City Ballet performed the recital.

Chairlift's third and last album, Moth, was released on January 22, 2016. The band revealed in December that they would be ending up, with a final tour in 2017.

Drawing the Target Around the Arrow, Polachek's second solo album, CEP, was released in January 2017. She had intended to appear at Moogfest in 2018, but she was unable to attend in December 2017 when the festival announced a list of female artists performing that year, despite the festival's predominantly male lineup. "This pertains not to the artists or their music, but rather to the festival's politics and self-congratulatory PR," she posted on Twitter. "Doing this without permission from the artists on display is disrespectful and irresponsible," Moogfest and other festivals have a responsibility to promote inclusivity as normal.

In 2016, Polachek appeared on Danny L Harle's album "Ashes of Love" for the first time. She appeared on two songs from Charli XCX's mixtape Pop 2 in 2017: as a featured artist on "Tears" and as a back vocalist on "Delicious," the latter of which features Tommy Cash. In 2018, Polachek was featured on Felicita's interpretation of the Polish song "By sobie król," which was released on Felicita's debut album Hej. "Marzipan" appears under the heading.

Polachek's debut single under her full name, "Door," was released in June 2019. Polachek revealed in a press release regarding the single that it was the start of a new venture, largely in collaboration with PC Music member Danny L Harle. Polachek performed two singles from the campaign, "Ocean of Tears" and "Parachute"), later in July, and she began to talk about her then upcoming album Pang, which was released on October 18. The album received critical acclaim and was featured on several critics' end-of-the-year lists. Standing at the Gate: Remix Collection, a remix album, was released on vinyl on April 16, 2021. Polachek also released five of the album's remixes as singles, as well as a a film of Corrs' "Breathless."

Polachek, along with Yung Jake, appeared on the album "RIP Harambe" by entrepreneur Elon Musk in 2019. In 2020, Polachek appeared on "La vita nuova" by Christine and the Queens, as well as making a guest appearance in the EP of the same name. A. G. Cook and Easyfun were among the song's later remixed by various designers associated with PC Music.

Polachek was announced as one of the first acts on Dua Lipa's Future Nostalgia Tour in September 2021. On February 9, 2022, the tour began. Charli XCX released "New Shapes" featuring Christine and the Queens and Polachek as the second single from her album Crash (2022), on November 4, 2021.

Polachek's "Bunny Is a Rider," another Harle collaboration, made the album, according to Crack Magazine, it was part of a forthcoming project. Pitchfork ranked "Bunny Is a Rider" at the top of their list of "The 100 Best Songs of 2021" in December. Polachek unveiled the single "Billions" on February 9, 2022. In March, she appeared on Australian electronic music producer Flume's single "Sirens," which was released ahead of his forthcoming studio album Palaces. Polachek revealed in June that she was working on her fourth studio album by posting a snapshot of herself in studio with Danny L Harle on Instagram. For the Minions: The Rise of Gru's soundtrack album, she recorded a cover of "Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down). "Sunset," Sega Bodega's co-production, was released on October 17th.
