Audrey Assad Career

Music career

Assad's musical career began in contemporary Christian music. The House You're Building, her debut album, was released on Sparrow Records in July 2010 and went on to be named on Amazon.com's list of Best Christian Music of the Year, as well as the Christian and Gospel Breakthrough Album of the Year on iTunes. She has collaborated and toured with other CCM artists, such as Chris Tomlin, Tenth Avenue North, Matt Maher, and Jars of Clay. Everest was the first woman to debut Evergreen in 2018.

Her family immigrated to Florida in 2002, and she spent the next six years there. When beginning her musical career, writing and composing songs for the first time, she briefly attended college and supported herself with odd jobs. Assad spent the next five years on tour, performing original songs and covers. Restaurants, weddings, and coffee shops can be found in these venues, as well as leading and facilitating worship services at church. Drew Middleton, a member of the CCM band Tenth Avenue North at the time, recorded a four-song demo in 2003. During those years, Assad toured with the band occasionally.

When Assad was 24 years old, she moved to Nashville, Tennessee, to continue and concentrate on her music career. She obtained $7,000 from relatives and supporters to help her move from Florida. She co-produced and recorded Firefly, a five-song EP that went on shows and had a handwritten cover made of a brown paper bag in Nashville. Before meeting fellow Catholic musician Matt Maher, she supported herself by working as a nanny. Maher took Assad under his wing and took her to several shows, where she sang back-up vocals and performed sets during his shows. The time they spent together around Maher's home base in Phoenix, Arizona, would later cause Assad to leave Nashville. During this period, Assad also worked as a staff writer for EMI Christian Music Group Publishing, doing songwriting for other writers.

After being notified of her EP, Assad signed Sparrow Records in 2009. Assad performed on her first album, then met and performed for producer Marshall Altman, who later agreed to create what would become The House You're Building. At the Galt Line Studio in Los Angeles, Altman and Assad recorded the album. The House You're Building was released on July 13, 2010, and the title track was featured as a free download on iTunes Discovery Download. According to SoundScan, the album did well commercially and critically, leading to the release of "Best Album of 2010" in the Christian Music segment, as well as being the top-selling new artist in the Christian Music market in 2010. The album debuted at No. 10. 12 on the Billboard Christian Albums chart and No. 1 at No. 21. On its Heatseekers chart, it ranks sixth.

On February 14, 2012, Heart, her second album, was released. The album's debut week saw 7,300 units, up 185 percent over her previous record, and debuting at No. 9. On the whole iTunes chart, there are 18 entries. The new album, for the most part, was a step forward in The House of Building's 'piano-driven style and lyrical depth.' The track "Sparrow" was released as a single and did well, and it did well. When Assad was young, "sparrow" was based on the classic gospel hymn "His Eye Is on the Sparrow," which Assad said she loved being in Sister Act 2 and hearing it.

Audrey Assad left Sparrow Records "on good terms" in an effort to direct her music closer to liturgical and worship music while also being attracted by the economic benefits of independent production. Assad launched a Kickstarter campaign with the support of her husband that raised the money by the end of the year on April 15, 2013. The proceeds went to support Assad's third studio album, Fortunate Fall, on which Assad produced herself under the title "Fortunate Fall Records," as well as a live concert EP, O Happy Fault, and a film of the concert.

Inheritance, Assad's second independent album, was released on February 12, 2016. In addition to two original songs, which were co-written with Matt Maher, the rest of the album includes new interpretations of traditional church hymns, "Holy, Holy, Holy" and "Be Thou My Vision," as well as a new interpretation of the Latin-language hymn "Ubi caritas." After being released as a single on March 15, 2016, "Holy, Holy, Holy" saw radio airplay. Assad revealed on July 10, 2017, she revealed on her Twitter page, that she was recording her first album of original content since Fortunate Fall, hinting at a debut in February 2018. Everest, the album, is now available on PledgeMusic, with 5 percent of campaign funds going to the Preemptive Love Alliance.
