Thomas James "Tom" Ridgewell (born 27 June 1990), better known online as TomSka, is a British YouTuber, writer, producer, actor, film director, and filmmaker as well as the creator of the Turbopunch Ltd.

His YouTube channel has over 6.1 million followers as of September 2019, and his videos have received over 1.47 billion views.

Early life and education

Ridgewell made short films with his parents' video camera as a child. Ridgewell began CakeBomb, a website where he showcased his designs, including his animated web series asdfmovie and Edd Gould's Eddsworld. Ridgewell earned a degree in Media Production at the University of Lincoln, and during his research, he created a series of unofficial advertisements for the university that attracted millions of views and were also broadcast on the BBC.

Personal life

Amelia, Ridgewell's twin sister, died early after their mother suffered injuries in a car crash.

He was born a Jehovah's Witness, but this faith is no longer followed. Despite this, he has voiced faith in a higher power.

Ridgewell has performed bass guitar in many films, including "Guitar Warfare" and "Mine Turtle" as a featured artist with LilDeuceDeuce, although not strictly a musician by trade.

In the 2017 United Kingdom general election, he favoured Labour and expressed his opposition to both Brexit and the Conservative Party.

Ridgewell, a professional YouTuber, makes money from YouTube ads. He has written and spoken about this, especially when the medium of online video first emerged. He has appeared on the BBC's The One Show and produced short films for Comedy Central.

Ridgewell launched DarkSquidge, a secondary channel that is now known as TomSka & Friends, in October 2007. The channel has over 1.38 million subscribers and 191 million views as of April 2022. Although his main channel consists of sketch comedy and animations, "TomSka & Friends" channel features behind-the-scenes footage of TomSka-related initiatives and videos, as well as vlogging. Ridgewell also participates in social commentary, focusing on topics such as mental stability, sexual health, and body positivity. In a series called Last Week, he uploaded weekly vlogs from April 2016 to February 2018.

Ridgewell released the first episode of asdmovie, an animated sketch comedy collection starring short clips of minimalist characters in bizarre and occasionally amusing situations. The "asdf" part of the name derives from the first four letters of the second row of letters on the "QWERTY" keyboard layout. In the dance rhythm game Just Dance 2018, LilDeuceDeuceDeuce's "Beep Beep I'm a Sheep" by Canadian musician LilDeuceDeuce, with vocals by Ridgewell and Gabriel Brown, was included. Art is Dead: the asdfmovie book, written by Ridgewell, illustrated by Matt Ley, and published by Little Brown on October 22, 2015. On November 8, 2018, Ridgewell and Eddie Bowley wrote Sam Kills Christmas, with illustrations by Dorina Herdewijn.

Ridgewell founded TurboPunch Ltd., a London-based media production company. He currently works in London alongside co-writer Eddie Bowley and video editor Elliot Gough. After Edd Gould, the show's designer, died of leukaemia, Ridgewell became the producer of Eddsworld. He left the series in 2016, giving the show to animator Matt Hargreaves.

Ridgewell was featured on the front page of Wired UK in February 2013 as part of a feature titled "How YouTube Reinvented the Entertainment Industry." In May 2013, he appeared in YouTube's first Comedy Week as a guest host for its Geek Week series in August.

Ridgewell developed the game KatataK in 2014, a side-scrolling shooter for iOS and Android devices, in collaboration with video game developer Pixel Spill Studios. Ridgewell will appear on BBC Radio 1 in September 2014 as a guest host on the Dan and Phil show.

Ridgewell filmed several sketches with the BBC in 2016 for a potential sketch show on BBC Three.

In May 2018, Ridgewell performed The Muffin Song, a spin-off song from his asdfmovie series, in collaboration with Schmoyoho. The video has over 200 million views as of October 2021.

In 2019, Ridgewell created Muffin Time: The Random Card Game, a card game based on asdfmovie. On Kickstarter, he earned over £1,000,000 for the game.
