Carl Benjamin Life

Carl Benjamin (born 1979) is an anti-feminist British YouTuber with the online pseudonym Sargon of Akkad.

He is a member of the United Kingdom Independence Party (UKIP).

According to a feminist viewpoint, he promoted a conspiracy theory that feminists were infiltrating video game study groups to influence game design during the Gamergate controversy.

His writing has mainly been dedicated to promoting Brexit and attacking feminism, Islam, identity politics, and what he sees as political correctness in the media. Benjamin is also known for his 2016 remarks about rape and a female Member of Parliament, Jess Phillips.

Benjamin responded to her complaint that he was regularly assaulted online by rape suspects, saying, "I wouldn't even rape you." Criticism of this —and a later remark in which Benjamin said he might rape Phillips — dominated press coverage of his failed 2019 bid for the South West England constituency of the European Parliament.

Carl Benjamin Career

YouTube career

During the Gamergate controversy in 2014, Benjamin's YouTube channel attracted widespread notice. According to Inside Higher Ed, his videos on the topic inspired a conspiracy theory in which he argued that members of the Digital Games Research Association (DiGRA) were actively plotting to influence video game development, "becoming digressive to become a think tank in which gender ideologues can disseminate their ideology to the gaming audience and then to gamers." He also wrote pieces that was critical of feminist video game critics and scholars, as well as general anti-feminism material. "Itad" - Benjamin said he had named his channel Sargon of Akkad because he was "a student of history and the lessons it can teach us."

When YouTube received a copyright lawsuit from The Guardian in June 2015, it took down one of Benjamin's videos. Benjamin denied the charge against the video, which used major portions of The Guardian's film. The Guardian said it was offering "advice on how to engage with Guardian material without violating copyright." The video was restored later that day. One Los Angeles Times opinion columnist weighed in on the case, saying it was "alarming to see copyright legislation used to stifle debate in the public square."

Anita Sarkeesian, a media analyst at VidCon 2017, appeared on a panel discussing online bullying directed at women. Sarkeesian's most popular YouTubers, including Benjamin, filled one half of the first three rows of the audience and filmed Sarkeesian as part of a targeted bullying campaign against her. Sarkeesian branded Benjamin as a "garbage human" who screamed out her name. Both critics and supporters of Sarkeesian went viral. Benjamin accused Sarkeeesian of violence and cyberbullying and said that he would have wanted to know how she "would like to be approached"; in a blog post, Sarkeesian wrote: "I would like to be approached."

Hank Green, the founder of VidCon, released a statement that the organization's conduct had been clear "intimidating conduct" and that she had apologised for the situation "which resulted in [Sarkeeesian] being exposed to a hostile environment that she had not signed up for." Pattinson also looked at allegations of bullying, but they found that Benjamin had not broken their code of conduct, although they did not find his behavior "disgustful."

Akilah Hughes, a comedian and YouTuber, has filed a lawsuit alleging copyright violation against Benjamin for using portions of his film "SJW Levels of Awareness" in 2017. Hughes was initially dismissed with prejudice in February 2020, but she was later ordered to pay Benjamin's legal fees after her allegations were found to be "objectively unreasonable."

In March 2018, North London Antifa demonstrators erupted into a arranged debate between Benjamin and Yaron Brook by the King's College London's Libertarian Society at the university. Masked demonstrators assaulted security forces, detonated smoke bombs, smashed windows, and set off a fire alarm, inflicting a fire alarm. The event's organisers called the cops, called the police, cancelled the performance, and evacuated the venue. Two security guards were hospitalized, according to the organiser.

When Benjamin was earning more than $100,000 per month, he banned him. Benjamin in breach of the site's hate speech policy by using "racial and homophobic slurs to shame another individual," Patton said. Following Benjamin's ban, a number of people, including Sam Harris, Jordan Peterson, and Dave Rubin, were left off the site, including Benjamin and Rubin, with Benjamin and Rubin moving to Peterson's Thinkspot. Harris said he did not "share the banned members' ideology," but he opposed Pat Patton's "political bias." Patton wrote a transcript of a YouTube video in which Benjamin said that members of the alt-right were "acting like white niggers" because "[e]xactly how you describe black people is the impression I get dealing with the Alt-right." "White people are supposed to be polite and courteous to one another," he said. "Don't want to have a discussion with one of your faggots," Benjamin said later in the video. Benjamin said that his victims were not black or homosexual, and that the epithet "nigger" is not offensive in Britain as it is in the United States. Benjamin also claimed that the remarks had been taken out of context.

Benjamin's Sargon of Akkad channel was suspended from YouTube's YouTube Partner Program in May 2019. Benjamin has since been banned from Twitter.

Political career

Benjamin said in a YouTube video that repeated this on Twitter in reaction to Labour Party politician and Member of Parliament Jess Phillips' assertion that rape threats are commonplace for her. He hasn't apologised for the remark. He was investigated by West Midlands Police for the remark, and a police spokesperson said he was "dealt with by way of words of advice."

Benjamin Benjamin joined the UK Independence Party (UKIP) in June 2018, as well as YouTuber Mark Meechan, better known by his online name Count Dankula, and far-right conspiracy theorist Paul Joseph Watson. Political analysts have characterized the trio's membership as part of a nascent right wing in UKIP under Gerard Batten's leadership. Benjamin came second on UKIP's list for the South West England constituency in the 2019 European Parliament's fifth round. Benjamin was not elected, with his party winning only 3.2 percent of the vote in his native South West England constituency and losing both of its seats and the rest of the country's entire council.

Benjamin refrained from his remarks about Phillips at a UKIP press conference, saying that "a good person does not laugh about male suicide" and that if Jess apologized for her position on women, he would apologise." Benjamin also said she was being a "giant bitch" for "laughing about male suicide," and that he was justified in being a "giant dick back." When Philip Davies called for a discussion for international men's day, he had earlier sluggish male suicides, reduced life expectancy relative to women, and domestic violence. When Davies spoke, Phillips openly laughed and pulled faces, triggering a social media outrage. Phillips had criticized the possibility of a "men's day," but he also said that male suicide is a serious problem.

The chairman of the Swindon branch of UKIP requested that Benjamin be rejected by Batten, who was unaware of it. Later in the campaign, he made further sarcastic remarks about Phillips, saying he could rape her but "nobody's got the right amount of beer." "It's a joke, not being controlled by jokes," he said, and it's empowering to victims of rape." The University of the West of England called off a hustings demonstration due to disruptions, and Exeter Cathedral barred him a few days later from attending separate elections.

Benjamin founded Hearts of Oak in February 2020 with British far-right activist Tommy Robinson and former UKIP representatives. Members of the organisation claim that it is not a political party, but rather a "cultural movement" focusing on "strong boundaries, immigration, and national identity," "government denies privileging and safeguarding Islam alone" and "freedom of expression."
