Gavin David Free (born (1988-05-23)23 May 1988) is an English actor, producer, cinematographer, and internet celebrity.

He is best known for his contributions to Rooster Teeth, where he spent time as a creative director. Achievement Hunter's gaming division was one of the company's favorites.

He supervised season 7 of Red vs. Blue, as well as its sister series Relocated. Free and co-host of the YouTube-based web series The Slow Mo Guys are also known as the creator and co-host of the YouTube-based web series The Slow Mo Guys, alongside his buddy Daniel Gruchy.

The series features a slow-motion video of various stunts and experiments, with over 1.5 billion views as of November 2018, the first since its inception in 2010.

In April 2011, the channel was selected runner of YouTube's On The Rise campaign.

On The Tonight Show, they had an episode involving crushing watermelons in September 2012.

Since 2013, Free has appeared alongside Gruchy in the annual YouTube Rewind series.

Woody in Lazer Team and its sequel, Vav in the animated comedy series X-Ray and Vain, and Scarlet David in RWBY were nominated for a Webby Award in the Best Web Personality/Host (Online Film & Video) category on 5 April 2016.

He is also known for his slow motion cinematography for films, including Hot Fuzz (2006), Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011), Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), and Dredd (2012).

Free has also worked on a slowed-motion video for BBC show Top Gear.

Early life

Free was born in Thame, Oxfordshire, where he attended Lord Williams' School.

He joined Green Door Films, Europe's first production house to use Phantom digital high-speed cameras as a source of slow motion in 2006. He spent time as a data technician and camera operator. He has worked on commercials and music videos for U2, Enter Shikari, Klaxons, Kasabian, The Chemical Brothers, X-Press 2, and the "Everybody Hurts" charity single.

Free spent time at his hometown Waitrose, where he first met Daniel Gruchy.

Personal life

Free has been in a relationship with Meg Turney since 2013. He is now a permanent resident of the United States as of March 2019.

On January 26, 2018, an unarmed man burst into the couple's Austin home with a handgun, firing one shot as the two fled into a closet and alerted authorities. The perpetrator was apprehended by police in the driveway, and one of the officers was killed by a firefight. The gunman, a devoted Turney supporter, had driven 11 hours from Albuquerque, New Mexico, to the couple's house. According to reports, he was resentful of Free's fame and ties. The incident involved both Free and Turney were unharmed.

He was recruited by Austin, Texas-based Rooster Teeth Productions to direct the seventh season of their machinima series Red vs. Blue in 2009. Relocated, a free mini-series, was also directed by Free. He appeared in Rooster Teeth's comedy mini-series Captain Dynamic and debuted in Rooster Teeth Shorts the same year.

In 2010, he founded The Slow Mo Guys alongside fellow Daniel Gruchy in the hopes of getting a work visa. The Slow Mo Guys are primarily composed of many objects being shot with Free's Phantom high-speed cameras. Their YouTube channel has received over 2.2 billion views and 14.2 million viewers as of February 2022. The channel was selected winner of YouTube's On The Rise campaign in April 2011, which highlights up-and-coming YouTube partners on the homepage. They were on The Tonight Show in September 2012. Free revealed in February 2013 that The Slow Mo Guys had been picked up by Rooster Teeth and that further episodes of the series would be released on Rooster Teeth's website, as well as the series's existing YouTube channel.

Free and Gruchy developed a partner channel to The Slo Mo Guys 2, as a channel for "laid back" labcoats' content that doesn't appear on the main channel as of February 2021.

Free joined Achievement Hunter (a video game division of Rooster Teeth established by Geoff Ramsey and Jack Pattillo) in 2008 as a contract host before becoming one of the main six hosts in 2012. He is one of the site's most popular contributors, including video games like Let's Play and its podcast Off Topic, as well as articles on how to obtain awards and find easter eggs in video games.

In May 2013, Free began acting as a "lab rat" in the Rooster Teeth series Immersion, replacing Geoff Ramsey and Gus Sorola. Free first appeared in the Rooster Teeth animated superhero web series X-Ray and Vav in November 2014. He portrayed Valiant alongside former Achievement Hunter employee Ray Narvaez, Jr., who is the voice of X-Ray. The season was revived for a second season, which premiered in July 2015. He appeared in Ten Little Roosters as a fictionalized version of himself and was a contestant on Comedy Central's improvised comedy series @midnight.

Burnie Burns, a founder of Free and Rooster Teeth, hosted multiple episodes of the hypothetical scenario series Million Dollars, But..., in which every individual takes on a new scenario; for example, being compelled to date Adolf Hitler for a year, for which they would be given a million dollars. On May 21, 2015, the pilot episode premiered, with the series continuing on September 9th. In August 2015, he was a reactor in the YouTubers React. Free took over Rooster Teeth's creative director in October 2015, replacing Burnie Burns who had been promoted to chief creative officer after being promoted to chief creative officer. However, he resigned in early 2016 after promising to "dedicate his time to The Slow Mo Guys" in 2016.

Woody was portrayed by Woody in Rooster Teeth's science fiction action comedy film Lazer Team in 2016. On January 27, 2016, the film was first released theatrically. Critics at film festival screenings and its debut mixed to enthusiastic responses. Scarlet David, David's voice cast of the anime web series RWBY, appeared in its third volume.
