Song Kang-ho Career

Career

Song performed in Kee Kuk-seo's theatre company, emphasizing instinctive acting and improvisation. He appeared in A Little Monk in 1991 and spent the next decade as a stage actor. Despite being tempted to appear in films, he ultimately turned down the opportunity until becoming an extra in Hong Sang-soo's 1996 film The Day a Pig Fell into the Well at age 30.

He gained cult notoriety for his appearance in Song Neung-han's No. 2 this year after playing one of the homeless in Jang Sun-woo's documentary-style Bad Movie. He received his first acting award at the Blue Dragon Film Awards as a gangster training a group of young people. Song appeared in several supporting roles before his appearance as Han Suk-kyu's top-secret agent partner in Kang Je-gyu's blockbuster thriller Shiri. Song's fame increased with his first leading role in the box office smash The Foul King, for which he did the majority of his own stunts in early 2000.

It was his award-winning 2000 debut in Joint Security Area as a North Korean sergeant who established him as one of South Korea's top players. Song appeared in Park Chan-wook's acclaimed sequel, Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance, which centers on a father's search for his daughter's kidnappers. In 2002, Song appeared in another big film starring Myung Films, YMCA Baseball Team, about Korea's first baseball team, which was founded in the early twentieth century.

In 2003, he starred in another critically acclaimed hit, Memories of Murder, from young director Bong Joon-ho. It was the first of several critically acclaimed films they would produce together, with commentators describing Bong's relationship with Song as a "great actor-director collaboration."

In 2004, Song appeared in The President's Barber, directed by debutant Im Chan-sang, which imagines the life of South Korean President Park Chung-hee's personal barber. He took the lead in Antarctic Journal in the following year, contributing to a big-budget venture by debut director Yim Pil-sung about an expedition in Antarctica that failed disappointingly at the box office.

Song was thrust back into the spotlight in 2006, but it was not until she appeared in Bong Joon-ho's record-breaking creature film The Host that she was praised. The film aided in international recognition of Song's talent, and in March 2007, he was named Best Actor at the inaugural Asian Film Awards in Hong Kong.

More high-profile projects followed: the Show Must Go On, an aging gangster, Lee Chang-dong's The Good, the Bad, the Weird, Park Chan-wook's debut on the Chinese-language blockbuster Snowpiercer, the gangster romance film Hindsight, the English-language spy drama The Face Reader, and the Attorney, which was inspired by Roh Moo-hyun's early days as a human rights advocate.

Song has appeared in a number of critically acclaimed films, including The Throne, a period film that puts a new twist on King Yeongjo and Prince Sado; period action film The Age of Shadows; and A Taxi Driver, a film that depicts the 1980 Gwangju Democratization Movement.

He was more recently cast in the critically acclaimed film Parasite, which was also directed by Bong Joon-ho, and was the first South Korean film to win the Palme d'Or, as well as the first to be nominated for and win the Academy Award for Best Picture.

He was named one of the nine judges in the 74th Cannes Film Festival's competition segment from July 6 to July 17. He was named Best Actor at the 75th Cannes Film Festival for his role in Broker the following year.
