Seth Putnam Life

Seth Edward Putnam (May 15, 1968-June 11, 2011) was an American musician who was the founder, singer, and occasional guitarist of grindcore band Anal Cunt.

He was known for his screamed vocals and lyrics that shocked, insult, or invoke morbid humor.

Putnam has also been involved in numerous side projects throughout his career.

Early years

Putnam was born in Newton, Massachusetts, on May 15, 1968, to Edward R. Putnam and Barbara Ann Donohue. He was of a quarter-English and a quarter Irish descent. His parents have been divorced. Seth was married to his first wife, Alison Dunn, from December 1998 to June 2001. On May 17, 2008, he married Julie, his second wife. Putnam played bass in the thrash metal band Executioner from 1986 to 1988. He owned his own record company named "Wicked Sick Records" and had a separate label called "Stridecore Records" which only had one release, Anal Cunt's The 5,643 Song EP.

Putnam was often described as a warm, thoughtful, and sensitive individual by fans and peers, despite his shock humor and turbulent life. Putnam saw himself as a comedian and used music as a platform.

Putnam's intelligence and stern classmates characterized him as a scholar, but unmotivated, apathetic, and often an underwhelming student. Putnam dropped out of a grade in school and became a brilliant student tutoring his classmates. Putnam often credited violent debates with Catholic school nuns for shaping his cynical image in his own words. He had lost interest in excelling in education or academics as a boy, becoming more of a slacker and underachiever when he got to high school. Putnam had left the Catholic faith in which he was raised by the time he had graduated from high school. Putnam expressed no interest in attending college or university after graduation.

When Putnam was a child, he also professed his own faith. Negative Approach and The Village People were two of Negative Perspective and The Village People, his all-time favorite bands, although his favorite film was The Bad Bunch.

Putnam's journey is chronicled in this series, with his coworkers expressing the duality of his persona; former bandmates Tim Morse and Scott Hull often refer to him as personable and relaxed, but Hull also notes that causing street trouble is common. Discordance singer Jon Chang says he was really close to Putnam for years but later described him as a "very disturbed guy" and a "backstabbing piece of shit at the end of his life." Chang also recalled an incident that occurred after Putnam's mother was removed from the show's moshpit, causing Putnam to become aggressive and threaten Chang. Putnam was also a good friend of Pantera frontman Philip Anselmo. As they went through Boston, Anselmo managed to get Anal Cunt to open for Pantera. Anal Cunt opened for Pantera three times. There is also a video of Putnam performing "Suicide Note Part II" with Anselmo at a show in 1998.

Kevin Sharp, a Brutal Truth and Venomous Concept vocalist, appeared on Metall Underground in 2019 to discuss an interview with Seth after his coma. Putnam also stated that he was a "encyclopedia of music."

Mike Williams Putnam, a Eyehategod vocalist, was a normal guy off-stage and soft-spoken. Williams also said he used to call Putnam, who has been away from the Chevron gas station where he worked, so that all his calls would be charged to Chevron.

Anal Cunt performed "Iron Funeral" on August 26, 1993, opened their set with their song "Iron Funeral" and performed Blur Including New H.C. Song Later that night, a woman later identified as Elizabeth Quigley grabbed Putnam's microphone, and during the second song, they played Blur Including New H.C. Putnam turned around and swung the microphone, swung the microphone, facing Quigley in the face. John Kozik, Tim Morse, and Paul Kraynak, the Anal Cunt players, began to yell at Putnam, requiring him to leave the theater and repeatedly say, "call the fucking cops!" yelts announced. Putnam, who was eventually arrested and incarcerated in a San Francisco jail, was also carrying several insults directed at him. Kozik had him bailed out the next morning. Putnam received a letter from Michael Spadaccini, Quigley's counsel, advising him that a civil case was pending against him for assault, but Putnam was suspended and fined $1200. A video of this show exists and can be viewed on YouTube. A cassette recording of this show, "Breaking the Law," was released on a live 7" featuring the band as a bootleg due to the band's affiliation with Earache Records. The track after the Nightbreak show is the sound of a jail cell door slamming that was recorded by Yaz, who is credited as the "party tech" in the 7" when Kozik was bailing Putnam out of jail. In the 7," there were photographs of the letter, Putnam's bail record, and a newspaper clipping of the show on Side B, as well as Siege's liner notes.

Putnam was hospitalized on October 12, 2004 after ingesting a mixture of crack cocaine, alcohol, opium, and heroin, as well as two months of Ambien sleeping pills. He spent the previous day contemplating suicide, according to reports, but the exact circumstances surrounding the drug overdose are vague.

"You're in a Coma" was on Anal Cunt's 1997 album "When You Die." "Actually, it was just as gay as the song I wrote nine years ago, being in a coma was just as stupid as I imagined it was." After the coma, Anal Cunt continued to perform the song on live broadcasts, with Putnam delivering anecdotes to the audience before the show.

Putnam overdosed on heroin prior to his coma in 2004. "I was dead for ten minutes from a heroin overdose in 1998," he said in a 2007 interview. The EMT's revived patients, but it didn't work. They tried it for the second time and it was a success. All I remember was awakening in my kitchen with no idea where I was. The EMT told me on the way to the hospital that I was probably going to have brain damage the remainder of my life. However, by the time I got to the hospital, I was completely recovered. I didn't get any'mystic visions' or something like that at the time."

Putnam and Six Feet Under vocalist Chris Barnes caused friction. Putnam and Josh Martin (Anal Cunt guitarist) performed at a Six Feet Under show on Monday, and Putnam and Josh Martin (Anal Cunt guitarist) yelled "Ha ha!" when they were touring for their first album to hand out fliers looking for a drummer.

you got kicked out of Cannibal Corpse!"

After Six Feet Under finished their set, which culminated in an altercation between the three three characters, with Six Feet Under's roadies ganging up on Putnam and Martin's wrists before Barnes escaped to his tour bus and hid there. As revenge for the 1999 disaster, Putnam released the song "Chris Barnes Is a Pussy." Six Feet Underwent went out of their way to avoid playing in the same city as Anal Cunt many years ago, according to Putnam in a television interview several years after the incident. "I suspect (Chris Barnes) is also afraid of me," Putnam said. Despite the feud, Putnam eventually became a devotee of Six Feet Under, and said that "Murdered in the Basement" was his new song by Six Feet Under. On his Eaten Back To Life tour, Martin claimed that Putnam saw Cannibal Corpse live.

In 2000, Anal Cunt was selected to attend the second New England Metal and Hardcore Festival. The big stage was headlined, Anal Cunt headlined the second stage, and Hatebreed headlined the Commercial Street Cafe. Security moved Hatebreed to Anal Cunt's stage and brought them up to play before they were put down. This obviously shocked the audience, who were about to see Anal Cunt, and according to Josh Martin, vocalist Jamey Jasta became outraged and called the audience "washed up metalheads" who allegedly said Hatebreed were more popular and sold more albums than Anal Cunt. Putnam and Martin were at the bar next door, uncertain what was going on, but by the time the Hatebreed set was over, Putnam was yelled at by Jasta. The result was a melee. Putnam was standing 20 feet away watching the melee erupts, according to Martin, who later lost a VHS tape of the battle. Putnam and his wife were arrested before midnight, along with Putnam.

On his show "The Jasta Show," Jamey Jasta interviewed Jimmy Bower from Eyehategod in February 2021. Putnam requested a mop to ensure the stage was clean because people were skating on it, but instead, they attacked the audience. He also said he used to ruin Anal Cunt's albums and book their shows. Bower related tales of Putnam using a fire extinguisher on stage and getting foam all over Eyehategod's gear.

Putnam died of a suspected heart attack at the age of 43 on June 11, 2011. He is buried at Newton Cemetery in Newton, Massachusetts.
