John Tardy Life

Obituary is an American death metal band formed in Tampa, Florida, in 1984.

Initially called Executioner, the band changed its name to Xecutioner in 1986 to avoid confusion with the thrash metal band Executioner from Boston, and then changed its name once again to Obituary in 1988.

The band's current lineup consists of vocalist John Tardy, drummer Donald Tardy, rhythm guitarist Trevor Peres, bassist Terry Butler, and lead guitarist Kenny Andrews.

Obituary has gone through several lineup changes, with the Tardy brothers and Peres being the only constant members.

The band was a fundamental act in the development of death metal music, and is one of the most successful death metal bands of all time.

To date, Obituary has released ten studio albums, and with the exception of their 1997–2003 split, they continue to perform live around the world.

Their music is based around heavily groove based riffs and drumming along with John Tardy's barking vocals, which create their signature brand of death metal.

John Tardy Career

Early career (1984–1990)

They were founded as Executioner in Seffner, Florida, but the "E" was soon deleted from their name after locating another band with the same name, the Xecutioner. John Tardy (lead vocals), Donald Tardy (drums), Trevor Peres (rhythm guitar), Jerome Grable (bass), and Jerry Tidwell (lead guitar). The band was inspired by Savatage and bands from the burgeoning Florida death metal scene: Nasty Savage, Death, and Morbid Angel. (The 1985 demo as Executioner and the 1986 and 1987 demos as Xecutioner) appeared in 1985, 1986, and 1987. On the Raging Death compilation, they made their vinyl debut in 1987 with two songs ("Find the Arise" and "Like the Dead."

Bassist Grable was replaced by Daniel Tucker and guitarist Tidwell was added by Allen West not long after the album's debut. The band's first album Slowly We Rot's first album, they renamed Obituary the following year. Tucker and West left the band and were respectively replaced by Frank Watkins and then-Death guitarist James Murphy right after their debut of Slowly We Rot. This new lineup features the band's second album Cause of Death, which was released in September 1990, and is often considered one of the most influential death metal albums of all time. Obituary funded Cause of Death with its first world tour, first the United States with Sacred Reich and Forced Entry, Europe with Demolition Hammer and Morgoth, and then to the United States with Sepultura and Sadus.

Murphy left Obituary in 1991, just prior to the writing and recording sessions of their third album, and was replaced by a returning Allen West. The Perees, Watkins, West, and the Tardy brothers' catalogs, beginning with Peres' End Complete (1992). The End Complete was a modest success for Obituary, with more than a thousand copies selling, and it was the band's first album to chart in the United States and Europe. The success culminated in the release of Obituary's first-ever music video, "The Conclusion Complete," which gained significant airplay on MTV's Headbangers Ball, and the band toured behind the album in over a year, from playing clubs to theaters and arenas.

World Demise, Obituary's fourth studio album, was released in September 1994. Despite the fact that the album did not sell as well as The End Complete, it did manage to reach the top 100 in several countries, including the United Kingdom, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands, and a video for "Don't Care" was shot. The band toured the United States with Napalm Death and a then-unknown Machine Head, as well as Europe with Pitchshifter and Eyehategod.

The band had become dissatisfied with touring after the introduction of their fifth album Back from the Dead (1997), which resulted in the band's disbanding. Donald Tardy played in Andrew, W.K., during this time. The touring band (during the United Kingdom) performed in Warwick (during the United Kingdom). The Obituary shirt on Saturday Night Live Tardy was on display. Allen West's two projects, Lowbrow and Six Feet Under, were focused on his two projects. Trevor Peres joined Catastrophic in 2001, the first year that the band, The Cleansing, had been out for one year. Obituary was established in 2003, but Catastrophic survived alongside the reformed Obituary. In 2005, Frozen in Time, a reunion album, was released. In January 2007, the band's first live DVD, Frozen Alive, was released.

Obituary was signed to Candlelight Records for its upcoming three films, Xecutioner's Return (2007), The EP Left To Die (2008). In January 2010, a concert DVD release was also announced. Since 2012, the band has been heavily involved in the promotion of Unity, as well as Donald Tardy's establishment of Metal Meowlisha, an organisation that practices "trap-neuter-return" and caring for 25 cat colonies (200 cats).

Obituary began work on new material for their ninth studio album Inked in Blood, which was not announced until 2014. It was the first Obituary album not to be released with longtime bassist Frank Watkins since their 1989 debut album Slowly We Rot. The band restored their studio in 2013 and continued to produce on the new album. The band launched a Kickstarter campaign on August 2, 2013 with the intention of raising $10,000; the money raised was used to enable Obituary to record and publish their ninth album in a standalone fashion. On August 3, the target was met. "This campaign has been amazing and just confirms what we already know, and that we have the most passionate followers in the country," John Tardy said of the Kickstarter campaign. We're raising enough funds to create an album on our own, which we're using on Kickstarter. This is not a slash against record companies; it is simply what we like to do. This would not even have been a thought years ago, but today we're sure we're in control, for better or worse, so give it a shot." Despite raising enough funds to self-release, the band had already signed to Relapse Records and contracted with the label for the distribution of Inked In Blood, the band's first Relapse release.

Frank Watkins, a former and long-serving Obituary bassist, died of cancer on October 18, 2015.

Obituary's "Loathe," a B-side to their then-upcoming single "Ten Thousand Ways to Die," was released on August 24, 2016. On March 17, 2017, the band's self-titled tenth studio album was released. The band's "No" song, which appeared on Decibel magazine's flexi disc collection, appeared a month before its debut.

Obituary embarked on a European tour in November and December 2018, also featuring Lamb of God and Anthrax. "We're always dreaming about new songs and writing riffs, and this and that," drummer Donald Tardy said in a June 2018 interview about the upcoming Obituary album. But this time of our lives and this moment in the music industry, this latest album has only been out for about a year, so we're in no rush to try and push another album out of us as quickly as we can; there's no reason." During the quarantine, Donald Tardy revealed that Obituary had been working on a "monster" of a new album that was supposed to be released in 2021. In 2021, specifically Europe, the band had intended to tour in 2021 in support of the record. In a March 2021 interview with French rock Nations, vocalist John Tardy reiterated his brother's remarks, adding that Obituary had been working on new material during the COVID-19 pandemic period and that a new album would be announced in 2022, with a tour to follow.
