Music career
Puno introduced himself and his talents to the entertainment industry by appearing at folk houses and small clubs in Metro Manila. Puno performed with the American Motown group, The Temptations, in 1975 while singing at the Palazzo. Puno's talent was later discovered by Vicor Records' executive producer (now Vicor Music). Love Won't Let Me Wait was his first album, while the Tagalog-infused The Way We Were became his first big hit.
Puno received the Aliw Award in 1976 for the Most Promising Entertainer. He was named the Entertainer of the Year in Aliw two years ago. His Rico in Concert at the Cultural Center of the Philippines unveiled him as one of the country's top pop stars.
Puno portrayed Merry Christmas Darling from Karen Carpenter's first Christmas album, The Spirit of Christmas.
Puno's presence and his regular concerts at the Araneta Coliseum (now SMART Araneta Coliseum) in Quezon City in 1978 set new records in terms of audience attendance. His fame turned him into a highly regarded product endorser, with San Miguel Beer advertisements in the 1970s.
Puno appeared in 1979 at the Tokyo Music Festival, as part of Lupa (Ground), a song that carried messages about how an individual could strive for the better, on how to develop humility and other human values, as well as how to avoid criticizing others.
Puno's popularity was maintained thanks to the production of the Greatest Hits series in Manila, which was released by Viva Concerts in 2001. These Greatest Hits concerts brought him together with other Greatest Hitmakers in the Philippine music industry in the 1980s, including Filipino pop superstars Hajji Alejandro, Rey Valera, Nonoy Zuguang, and Marco Sison.
