She began modelling at the age of 16, has appeared in over five hundred commercials, and appeared in Falguni Pathak's "Yaad Piya Kagi" and "Piya Se Mil Ke Aaye Nain." Richa made her film debut in Nuvve Kavali (2000), opposite Tarun, whom she had previously worked with in a commercial shot by Rajiv Menon. Richa "did not appear like a debutant" in her role in the film, which portrayed love between two childhood friends in college, received lauded praise from critics who said she did not appear to be a rookie." In addition, Richa was given the Filmfare Best Telugu Actress Award for 2000.

In Shajahan's debut in Tamil cinema, she played lead opposite Vijay. Critics praised the film, but Richa's performance was noted to have "done little good." Alli Arjuna, directed by well-known film maker Saran, starred Manoj Bharathiraja. Richa was portrayed by Manoj as an independent girl, but unfavourable reviews followed her saying, "You do not feel for Richa."

In Kuch Tum Kahein, Fardeen Khan's first Hindi film as a lead actress, she was opposite Fardeen Khan in one of the best films but the film was ultimately doom. Richa said that the lack of publicity may have explains the film's stifling reception. Her subsequent Hindi films within the next two years, which included two films starring actor Rakesh Bapat, were low-budget and did not do well at the box office. In the same way, her Kannada, Cheppale, and Jootata, opposite Sameer Dattani's, failed commercially, with reviews blaming Richa's results in the former. Richa went on to appear in Yashraj Films' Neal 'N' Nikki, starring Uday Chopra and Tanisha, as Sweety. Richa was forced to appear in a supporting role in Unakkum Enakkum after several of her previous ventures failed to succeed.

Richa went on to claim that poor public relations and lack of exposure led to her disappearance from films before returning to film in 2009, her first appearance in a Malayalam film starring Daddy Cool. Annie Simon, the mother of an eight-year-old, received critical acclaim and the film was a commercial hit. In 2010, she appeared in Inkosaari, a Telugu language film starring Raja and Manjari Phadnis. However, the film didn't do well commercially because it was released alongside the hit film Ye Maaya Chesaave, which attracted more viewers. Richa appeared in two low-budget unreleased Tamil films, Nalvaravu and Kadhal Kalvan, near the end of her career as a lead actress. When it was released in theatres, she was chosen to be one of the Hindi-dubbing artistes for the Hindi-dubbed version of X-Men: First Class, she was named as Moira MacTaggert's role.

Richa retired from acting for a few years after her wedding before appearing in Yagavarayinum Naa Kaakka / Malupu (2015) as a supporting character.
