C. Joseph Vijay (born 22 June 1974) is an Indian film actor and playback singer who works in Tamil cinema.

Thalapathy (commander), his first role in Vetri (1984), directed by his father S. A. Chandrasekhar, is one of the highest-paid actors in the industry, and he is remembered by fans and media as Thalapathy (commander).

He appeared as the lead in Naala Theerpu (1992), who was later ruled by his father.

He made his breakthrough in the film Poove Unakkaga (1996), which was directed by Vikraman.

Vijay has appeared in 63 films as a lead actor, one Tamil Nadu State Film Award, one Siam Award, one Indiatoday Award, three Vijay Awards, two Vijay Awards, two Vikatan Awards, and one National Award for his performance "Selfie Pulla" in 2014.

He has also been praised for his dancing moves in his films.

Early life and family

Joseph Vijay Chandrasekhar was born in Madras, Tamil Nadu, on June 22, 1974. His father, S. A. Chandrasekhar, is a Tamil film producer, and Shoba Chandrasekhar, his mother, is a playback singer and carnatic vocalist. His father, S. A. Chandrasekhar, is of Christian Tamil descent, and his mother, Shoba, is a member of the Hindu family. Vijay was baptized in a Catholic family at the age of 12. Vijay's family and his mother Shoba used to earn 100 rupees as her daily income by performing in concerts, while his parents' were starving without food on the days. Vijay had a sister, Vidhya, who died when she was two years old. Vijaya's death shocked Vijay greatly; as a child, Vijay, who was extremely talkative, naughty, and hyperactive, went quiet after Vidhya's death. Vijay's memory, she recalled his production house, V.V Productions, which stands for Vidhya-Vijay productions. In 2005 film Sukran, in which Vijay appeared in a film for the duration, Vidhya's memorable photograph was displayed.

Vijay started attending Fathima Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Kodambakkam and later joined Balalok Matriculation Higher Secondary School in Virigambakkam and went on to pursue a degree in Visual Communications from Loyola College. He eventually dropped out because he was more interested in acting.

Personal life

Vijay married Sangeetha Sornalingam, a Sri Lankan Tamil who lived in the United Kingdom, on August 25, 1999. They have two children, Jason Sanjay born in 2000 in London, and Divya Shasha, a 2005 Chennai mother, have two children. Jason Sanjay appeared with his father in Vettakaaran (2009), and Divya Shasha played a small part as her father's pre-teen daughter in Theri (2016).

The Income Tax Department raided Vijay's Chennai residence on Friday, asking about tax evasion related to his investment in immovable assets, which he inherited from the production studio AGS Entertainment. Officials from Cheliyan's residence confiscated actor Vijay and AGS Entertainment producer Anbu Cheliyan, and nearly 70,000 dollars were stolen. Vijay was detained whilst filming for his film Master in Cuddalore. Nothing significant was found during the search, according to the I-T department, and Vijay has paid all of the necessary taxes on March 12th. In film Mersal, non-BJP supporters and politicians accused the BJP of politically attacking actor Vijaya through IT raids because he was critical of the BJP's Demonetization (currency) and Goods and Services Tax (India).

The Madras High Court dismissed a petition brought by actor Vijay in 2012 requesting the exemption of Entry Tax for his Rolls Royce Ghost car, which was imported from England. It has also charged a fine of 1 lakh to be paid by him, and it will be transferred to the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister's Public Covid Relief Fund. Justice S.M. Vijay's fanbase regards him as a hero, and he was also designated as an anti-national habit, according to Subramaniam. Vijay lodged an appeal against Judge S.M.'s defamatory remarks on July 15, 2021. In Madras, the subpoenas was brought against him. Vijay's appeal against the tax exemption claim and defamatory remarks made by Judge S.M. was dismissed on July 2021. In the High Court, Subramaniam was transferred to a different tax bench position. Judge S.M.'s earlier ordered was suspended until a two-judge bench of Madras High Court postponed the order until July 27. Subramaniam made critical remarks against Vijay in the Rolls Royce tax exemption issue but also stayed the original order of a 1 lakh fine amount. The defamatory remarks made by Judge S.M. on January 25, 2022, was dismissed and deleted by the Madras High Court. In a Rolls Royce tax exemption lawsuit, Subramaniam against Vijay is a matter of contention. The Madras High Court ruled that no fine should be levied against the Rolls Royce car importing actor Vijay until he had paid the full entry tax on his Rolls Royce car before January 2019 and closed the Rolls Royce tax lawsuit.

Mahendra Singh Dhoni, an Indian cricketer, had a friendly chat with Vijay on the set of his film Beast on August 12, 2021, and it went viral on social media.

Vijay had a different interpretation of philosophy regarding films, politics, and life lessons. He has appeared on many occasions as a motivator. Vijay has stated that films are limited to a specific industry niche, with entertainment, and he is one of them, and he has asked the audience to take the lighthearted positive news only from his films and leave off the scathing negative ones. "I have faith in god, and it must be; I go to church, temple, dargah, and felt the divine presence," Vijay said in an interview. Even at one time, Vijay said, "The crown on your head can be heavy, but your head shouldn't be heavy at all."

Vijay's net worth as of 2021 is 4,4200 million or 420 crore, and he owns luxurious vehicles, including Rolls Royce Ghost, Audi A8, BMW series 5, and Mini Cooper. Vijay, who was on his way to America, was captivated by Tom Cruise's beach house and its facilities, so he took a snapshot of it and built a similar beach house for him at Neelankarai, Chennai. Vijay earned more than $100 crore for Beast and surpassed Rajnikanth's salary, while his 66th film made him one of the highest paid Indian actors in the industry.

Vijay Chandrasekhar Career

Film career

Vijay began acting as a child actor in the film Vetri (1984) and later appeared in films such as Kudumbam (1984), Sattam Oru Vilayaattu (1987) and Ithu Engal Neethi (1988). In Naan Sigappu Manithan (1985) co-starring Rajinikanth as the lead actor, he also appeared as a child actor. In 1984, Vijay's first salary as a kid actor was $500 per film Vetri, directed by veteran actor P. S. Veerappa, and he appeared in the film. Vijay appeared in two old cinema styles, including Eastmancolor in the 80s and a Color film from the 90s, including the late 90s.

Vijay played lead roles in the films directed by his father until age 18 from Naala Theerpu (1992). Vijay appeared in Sendhoorapandi (1993), which only succeeded to a certain degree at the box office, and she appeared alongside Vijay (1993). Rasigan's film in 1994 was released, but critics aren't raving about it. This was the first film in which Vijay was credited with the prefix Ilaya Thalapathy (young commander), an epithet by which he became well-known among fans and journalists for the remainder of his career. He appeared in films including Deva and Rajavin Parvayile, where in the latter he co-starred with actor Ajith Kumar. Vijay's film Devay was a box office hit, and she did a risky stunt. In the hit romantic comedy Vishnu, he co-starred veteran Tamil actor Jaishankar. In the film Vishnu, Vijay's intro scene, the costume had an ear stud similar to Will Smith's The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. Though Chandralekha's romantic tragedy turned into mediocre at the box office, the box office was not exactly successful. He appeared in the Coimbatore Mappillai a romantic comedy film in early 1995. Comibatore Mappillai was a fruitful venture, but not well known by critics.

Vijay's unique style of performances had him establish himself as a romantic hero by the mid-1990s. Some of them turned out to be cult-classic films.

Vijay appeared in the Vikraman-directed Poove Unakkaga in 1996, his first critically acclaimed appearance, as well as the triumph over Vijay's career, making him a well-known actor. The tenth film on Vijay was followed by the hit action films Maanbumigu Maanavan and Selva. Vijay appeared in successful ventures Kaalamellam Kaathiruppen in which he has a tussle of love with a woman and later sacrifices his love for a woman as a result of the agony, was applauded by the viewers, and later, was praised for his role as a businessman who was tracked by a revenge seeking woman in Once More, where he co-starred veteran actor Sivaji Ganesan and debutante actor Simran's He appeared in Mani Ratnam's hit-back film Nerukku Ner, directed by Vasanth co-starring debutant Suriya, as the plot revolves around the struggle between the in-laws, and the film attracted critical acclaim. He then performed as a student in Kadhaluk Mariyadhai, directed by Fazil, and received the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actor. Vijay appeared in the hit films in Ninaithen Vandhai and a highly coveted lover in Priyamudan in 1998, with New Straits Times Malaysian magazine lauding Vijay's diverse role as an anti-hero in Priyamudan, describing it as a love story with a difference. Priyamudan was named as one of Vijay's most notable films as a performer, according to India Today. In Nilaave Vaa, he appeared as a Christian youth-falling-in-love with a Hindu girl. Vijay appeared in Thulladha Manamum Thullum's debutant Ezhil's Thulladha Manamum Thullum as a passionate performer, with Simran, which lasted for more than 200 days at the Tamil Nadu box office and earned Vijay a Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Film in 1999. Endrendrum Kadhal, Nenjinile as a hitman for a gangster and Minsara Kanna were followed by lucrative films.

Vijay began to commit to entertaining ventures in 2000, which marked a change in direction. In 2000, he appeared in Kannukkul Nilavu's flopful 25th film directed by Fazil, as an egoistic-lover in Kushi, and two commercially good romantic films as an Indian-cultural-shades, as an egoistic-lover in Kushi, and a NRI husband with non-Indian-cultural differences. His next success in 2001 was the comedy drama film Friends, which was directed by Siddique and starred him in the leading role opposite Suriya once more. Vijay appeared in a hit film Badri as a kickboxer and Shahjahan as a lover-doctor in this romantic-tragedy film. He appeared in the commercially lucrative action film Thamizhan as a lawyer alongside Hindi actress Priyanka Chopra in 2002. Later, he appeared in the hit films with romantic film Youth as a cook and as an avenger in the action film Bagavathi. Vijay began in 2003 with the comedy film Valiantgara and the supernatural film Pudhiya Geethai.

Vijay appeared in Thirumalai, co-starring Jyothika, and produced by K. Balachander's Kavithalaya Productions, a different version of the action-romance film produced in late 2003. Thirumalai was considered a turning point in Vijay's career. Udhaya, which began filming in 1998 and 2002, was finally released in early 2004.

Ghilli, a Telugu film Okkadu, was released in 2004 and spent 200 days in theatres in Tamil Nadu. It was directed by S. Dharani and produced by A. M. Rathnam. It co-starred Trisha and Prakash Raj. Ghilli was the first Tamil film to gross over 500,000 (roughly 50 crore) in the domestic box office. Padayappa (1999), Rajinikanth's Padayappa (1999), which then grossed a whopping 30 crore, was regarded as the benchmark for Tamil film industry in terms of box-office figures for almost five years. At the time, Ghilli also set the record for being the highest grossing non-Malayalam film in Kerala, and it also did better than standard Malayalam films in the state. The film earned over $500,000 in the Malaysian market, making it the first non-MGR or non-Rajinikanth film to do so. M. G. Ramachandran's Adimai Penn (1969) record for the most people watching a movie in the first week of its debut was another record broken by Ghilli. Ghilli has received rave reviews. This film, "Vijay," the Hindu, and Prakash Raj, the inimitable villain in tow, was on a winning track, according to the Hindu. When confronted by Muthupandi (Raj) in the Bollywood film Chennai Express (2013), Velu (Vijay) briefly uses Dhanalakshmi (Trisha) as a hostage.

In 2005, Ghilli was followed by commercially successful films Madhurey, directed by Ramana Madhesh, and debutant Peresu's Thirupaachi. He then appeared in Sukran's direction for his father. He appeared in two commercially lucrative films: Sachien, co-starring Genelia D'Souza, directed by John Mahendran, and Asin's co-starring Asin, both directed by Perarasu. The critics and The Hindu applauded Vijay's portrayal of a carefree youth in the film Sachien, "Vijay ranks as Sachein, and the moviegoers are especially interested." In early 2006, Vijay's next film, Aathi, a Telugu film Athanokkade, was released. It is produced by his father S. A. Chandrasekhar, and Ramana's second attempt at the box office was average. Vijay appeared in the gangster film Pokkiri, a relaunch of Prabhu Deva's Telugu film of the same name. Pokkiri became the second highest-grossing Tamil film of all time, and the first Tamil film to complete a 100-day theatrical run in Kerala. Pokkiri received rave reviews, and Sify magazine said that Vijay's Pokkiri was "enjoyable for its humour and action sequences as long as it lasts." At the time, Pokkiri was also one of Vijay's highest-grossing films.

Vijay appeared in Bharathan's romantic thriller film Azhagiya Tamil Magan, his first film role. For the first time in his career, Vijay played two roles. Both the antagonist and protagonist were in his roles. The film was only a moderate success at the box office. In 2008, Vijay was honoured with the People's Choice Superstar award at the Vijay TV awards ceremony. As it was reviewed by BBC UK, Azhagiya Tamil Magan's film had the right balance of romance and action. In 2007, Azhagiya Tamil Magan, a top grosser at the overseas box office, earned $1.043 million overseas, a top grosser at the foreign box office. In Malaysia, Screen Daily, a British newspaper, announced that Azhagiya Tamil Magan had achieved the top ten Asian films box office, beating the record in 2007. He appeared in the action comedy film Kuruvi, again under Dharani's direction, and Red Giant Movies produced him in 2008. "Kuruvi a superhero film for the masses" was the subject of a Sify magazine's "Kuruvi a superhero film for the masses." Kuruvi was the highest grossing Tamil film of 2008 in the United Kingdom at that time. Villu, the neo-noir action film in which Vijay teamed up with Prabhu Deva and appeared in another dual role, started the year 2009 with Villu. Critics were dismissive of Villu's mediocre reviews. His new film, Vettaaran, directed by Babusivan and produced by AVM Productions and distributed by Sun Pictures, became one of the top-grossing Tamil films of 2009. Barring commercially lucrative Vettakaaran (2009), all of his subsequent releases from Azhagiya Tamil Magan, Kuruvi, and Villu were average; all three films were more popular overseas than domestically setting him a target overseas; Vijay was the highest paid actor after Rajnikanth and Kamal haasan, and Vijay received more money than some contemporaries for his films in 2009. In 2010, he appeared in the action comedy film Sura, which was also released by Sun Pictures. This was Vijay's 50th film. "Sura has superhero stunts and tops with Vijay's dance," the Indonesian Times described "Sura has superhero stunts and tops." With its Hindi satellite rights being sold, Sura turned out to be a budget-only-recovery film and low return. Sura had the highest TRP in Sony Max, but not so much.

Vijay appeared in early 2011 for the romantic comedy Kaavalan, a Tamil remake of the Malayalam film Bodyguard. Both viewers and critics were impressed by the show, and it was a commercial success, with a worldwide box office receipt of 102 crore. The Shanghai International Film Festival in China featured Kaavalan. Kaavalan's reputation in China has attracted adoring reviews from Chinese audiences, and it has been a commercial success. M. Raja's next film, Velayudham, directed by M. Raja and produced by Venu Ravichandran was announced during Diwali the same year. Velayudham became one of 2011's top-grossing films. Velayudham was also praised for its financial success. Vijay tried to be a hero in Velayudham for the third time, although critics noted that his costume and combat style were similar to the Assassin's Creed franchise. Velayudham became a hit in Japan and a point of pride.

Nanban, the Tamil remake of the Bollywood film 3 Idiots directed by S. Shankar, was released during the Pongal weekend of 2012 and met with a lot of financial success. Nanban was screened at the Melbourne International Film Festival in Australia. Vijay's role in the film was lauded by critics, including leading Indian actor Kamal Haasan. Nanban had a grand total of 100 days on the stage. The film Nanban grossed 150 crore at the box office, according to the Indian Express. In the 2012 Bollywood film Rowdy Rathore, directed by Prabhu Deva, he made a special cameo song appearance. The action thriller Thuppakki, directed by A. R. Murugadoss and produced by S. Dhanu, was released on Diwali 2012 to mixed reviews. Following Sivaji (2007) and Enthiran (2010), the film became the third Tamil film to enter the 1 billion (US$13 million) club domestically. Thuppakki was Vijay's highest-grossing film at the time, and the first of his films to gross over 2,000 million dollars. At the Russian film festival, Thuppakki was shown.

According to mixed reports, A. L. Vijay's next film, Thalaivaa, was released worldwide on September 9, 2013 and there was a postponement of its release in Tamil Nadu. Thalaiva was a international success.

Jilla, Mohanlal and Kajal Aggarwal's co-starring Mohanlal and R. T. Neason, was released on a Pongal weekend in 2014 and ended up as a box office hit. Vijay appeared in the action thriller Kaththi co-starring Samantha Ruth Prabhu and Neil Nitin Mukesh and produced by Ayngaran International on Diwali 2014, which received mainly critical feedback. He performed both as a criminal-minded robber and an idealist. Kaththi was dubbed a "success in style" by the Los Angeles Times. At the post office, Kaththi collected 130 crore.' It was the second-highest-grossing Tamil film of 2014.

Puli, the fairy tale fantasy film from 2015, was released. Chimbu Deven had been expected to begin filming in January 2011 for UTV Motion Pictures, but UTV Motion Pictures decided against it in October 2011. The film's tentatively named Maareeesan was supposed to begin filming in late 2011, but ATV Motion Pictures ended it as producers after the project was delayed in October 2011. The initiative was later cancelled, but Deven's other films were still in production. In late 2013, Deven revived preliminary work on the fantasy film and narrated the script to Vijay, who expressed keenness in being involved in the project. The project's sponsors in P. T. Selvakumar, Vijay's press relations officer, and Shibu of Thameen Films, who have previously sold several of Vijay's films throughout Kerala, have subsequently found producers in P. T. Selvakumar, Vijay's press relations officer, and Shibu of Thameen Films. After completion of Vijay's casting in Murugados' Kaththi, the two producers formed a new production company, SKT Films. Puli received mixed reviews from analysts, though Vijay was lauded for entering a new genre. Puli was one of the top-grossing films of 2015 in its entirety. The film's Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi satellite rights were sold for 100 crore per film. Puli had the highest TRP in Rishtey Cineplex, despite that. Since director Deven is a cartoonist, the film's half-demon was loosely based on Japanese hit anime manga series Inuyasha, which is similar to the one in which Vijay played a "Tiger-demon" with tiger's teeth and blue eyes. Vijay excels in the film as a "tiger-demon," according to the Sydney Morning Herald. Puli is a success in overseas markets, and it is regarded as one of the Indian films that raised the bar to international level, according to the IB Times.

Kalaipuli S. Thanu, a singer from Atlee, decided on a loan that would star Vijay in September 2014. Several titles for the film had been considered before the designers announced Theri in late November 2015. The film was "75% complete" in the same month. Action scenes, choreographed by Dhilip Subbarayan, were shot throughout the month, but the film was interrupted by the heavy flood in Chennai. Kaloyan Vodenicharov, a Hollywood action choreographer, joined the team early December 2015 to help shoot the film's climax sections, but the crew had to abandon their plan of filming sequences and instead shoot in Bangkok due to poor climatic conditions in China. Sets were erected in a factory in Chennai to film the climax scenes, with stunt choreographer Vodenicharov hired to assist train artistes and film the scenes in December 2015. The action-thriller Theri was released in April 2016 to mixed reviews from critics and audiences as the film displayed brutality with a 'U'censor certificate and also a dragged and predictable storyline. It was the second-most grossing Tamil film of 2016 and Vijay's second film to gross over 1,710,000,000.

In January 2017, Bharathan's next film, Bairavaa, co-starring Keerthy Suresh and produced by Vijaya Productions, was released. Vijay appeared in Bharathan of Azhagiya Tamil Magan fame, called Bairavaa, a low-budget film. Audiences and commentators applauded Bairavay's coin flipping technique, and the box office received mixed feedback, and Bairavaa received a 115 crore payout. Following his back-to-back successes of films from Bairava to Mersal, Forbes portrayed Vijay as a regular hit-maker. Vijay was awarded the 'Samrat of South India Box Office medal' during the Behindwoods Gold Medal in July 2017 for his contribution to Tamil cinema since 1996. Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kajal Aggarwal, Nithya Menen, co-starring Samantha Ruth Prabhu, was directed by Atlee, co-starring Samantha Ruth Prabhu, Kajal Aggarwal and Nithya Menen, and Sri Thenandal Films produced his 61st film, Mersal, the action thriller. Following Atlee's Theri's success, Sri Thenandal Films and Vijay have agreed to work together on another project in September 2016. Vijay learnt a few magic tricks in preparation for his role as a magician, Gogo Requiem from Macedonia, Raman Sharma from Canada, and Dani Belev from Bulgaria. Vijay also plays doctors; the character, Maaran (or 5 doctor), was influenced by Dr. Balasubramanian, a doctor who hails from Bodinayakkanur, Theni district, and received a 2% from patients. Vijay played a triple role in the film, despite also playing a father in 1970s Madurai. Ilayapathy (young commander) in Mersal changed to Thalapathy (commander) thanks to his film portrayal of character Vetrimaaran using the latter term. Mersal was released on October 18, 2017, coincident with Diwali. It was both a critical and commercial success, and it was the first of Vijay's films to gross over 2.5 billion. In Japan, the film was also released in four major cities, Tokyo, Ebina, Osaka, and Nakaya. Vijay was nominated at the National Film Awards in the United Kingdom in 2018, and also for his role in Mersal, and the film received the Best Foreign Language Film award at the National Film Awards UK. Following Kaavalan (2011) and Puli (2015), Vijay's third film to be released in China was Vijay's third film to be released in China. The film was also screened at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival in South Korea.

Despite the success of Mersal, several ideas presented in the film were challenged by various organisations: the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), India's most influential political party, and the then-ruling AIADMK had objected to scenes in which the protagonist criticizes the newly introduced Goods and Services Tax, as well as a scene in which a character ridicules Digital India, which was also criticized by the BJP. The party requested that those scenes be removed from the film for future viewing pleasure, but the opposition and several other famous Tamil actors all demanded that this be seen as an attack on freedom of expression. In addition, many medical organizations, including the Tamil Nadu Government Doctors' Association, have sluggishly condemned the film for the alleged cynical portrayal of doctors in government-operated hospitals. Doctors with the Indian Medical Association posted links to the film on piracy websites online in the hopes of causing financial damage to the film's producers.

Murugadoss was confirmed to be the producer of Vijay's 62nd film following their highly awaited ventures, Thuppakki and Kaththi. Keerthi Suresh appeared in Sarkar, a documentary film, for the second time after Bairavaa. Following its launch on Diwali 2018, the Government of Tamil Nadu accused Sarkar and Vijay of inciting the people by attacking the government in certain scenes, as well as defaming former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa by naming the main villain (Varalathkumar) with her suspected original name Komalavalli. Several demonstrations by the AIADMK cadre also erupted at theatres where the film was shown and vandalism of Vijay banners prompted. The Sun Pictures, which is owned by the film's director Kalanithi Maran, has been accused of attacking the government. Many actors, including veterans Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan, defended the filmmakers by blaming language oppression. Due to the threat of government lawsuits, the filmmakers were able to avoid cutting the controversial scenes and mute references of Komalavalli from the audio track. Sarkar set new attendance records and joined the 100 Crore Club in just two days. Vijay, a man with a "swag" in the political drama film, was portrayed by the Hollywood Reporter. The Election Commission of India released information about Section 49P of the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961, which allows a voter to return his/her ballot and vote if someone else voted in that individual's name, owing to the film's success and media attention. Sarkar's second film to earn over $2.5 billion was his second film to do so. Sarkar was released in Spain. It was also shown in Grand Rex, France, and Japan.

However, there were rumors that Vijay's 63rd film would be directed by Mohan Raja or Perarasu in August 2018, but it was revealed that Atlee, who worked with Vijay in Theri and Mersal, would direct the film. The film, which has since been revealed as Bigil, is a football action film. Vijay also underwent special education in football, with the sequences being choreographed by well-known sports choreographers Aimee McDaniel and Justin Skinner. Pelé: The former had choreographed for films including Pelé: Birth of a Legend, Million Dollar Arm, and 13 Reasons Why, and the latter is an English footballer. Nayanthara was chosen to act as the female lead role in the film, while Vivek and Anandaraj appeared in the film as supporting characters. This was Vivek's first encounter with Vijay since Kuruvi (2008), and both Nayanthara's and Anandaraj's first collaboration since Villu (2009). Bigil, Vijay's last film of the decade, was released in 2019. Critics and admiration for Vijay's portrayal of Rayappan as an aged gangster was mixed, as one of the film's positive points. It was a commercial success and raised more than 300 crore, becoming both the highest-grossing Tamil film of 2019 (within three months of its debut) and the highest-grossing film of Vijay's career. Bigil was also the first Tamil film to be released in Egypt and Jordan. Bigil was the first Tamil film to be re-released in Germany in 2020.

Director Lokesh Kanagaraj revealed in August that he would be working with Vijay in a film directed by Xavier Britto, who is Vijay's cousin. On December 31, 2019, the first look poster of the film Master, an action thriller, was released, coinciding with the New Year's Eve. The highly awaited film was supposed to be released on April 9, 2020, but it was delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. After being postponed for several months, it was announced in theatres on January 13-2021 with its Tamil, Hindi (Vijay The Master) and Telugu versions. Vijay's Master was given a twitter emoji ahead of it being announced on Twitter. Master was the highest-grossing film in Abu Dhabi (UAE), with a two-day box office haul that exceeded Hollywood's Wonder Woman 1984 and Tenet only in UAE. Master was featured at the International Film Festival in Alberta, Canada. Upon its introduction, viewers and commentators gave Master both praise and critiques. Master was described by a British journal as "a mass action film but not long enough." Master exported 300 billion dollars in total, which was announced as a box office record breaker. According to trade analysts, the sum of Mersal, Sarkar, Bigil, and Master's gross income was forecast to be over 1000 crore.

Nelson was announced as the producer of Vijay's 65th film, which also produced his blockbuster film Sarkar in December 2020. In the film, Vijay was paired with Pooja Hegde. In the film, VTV Ganesh played Vijay in the comedic role. Anirudh Ravichander produced the film, which was a black comedy action film and a music score. Beast, the film's first glance poster, was unveiled on June 21, 2021. The demon Rahu demon eclipses the sun and the moon mercilessly; Vijay in the film had similar traits, and he was a shotgun-wielding creature in the film. Beast, as well as its Hindi dubbed version titled Raw, were theatrically released on April 13, 2022, worldwide.
