She is best known for her appearances in Lolita's 1997 film version as the title character and as Sean Archer's niece Jamie in the action-thriller Face/Off (1996).

She appeared in independent films in the late 1990s and early 2000s.

Girl (1998), Happy Campers (2001), Tart (2001), Pumpkin (2002), and Alpha Dog (2006) are among her other works.

She has appeared in a string of horror films since being cast.

Swain started her acting career in Hollywood as a stunt double; in Joseph Ruben's The Good Son (1993), she appeared as the second for Macaulay Culkin's younger sister Quinn. She was chosen out of 2,500 girls to appear in Adrian Lyne's controversial 1997 film adaptation of Lolita. She was 15 years old at filming, and critics lauded her achievement. Jamie Archer, a rebellious teen, appeared in Face/Off (1997) in John Woo's Face/Off. She appeared in Girl, a 1998 drama film in which she plays a high-schooler determined to regain her virginity. She appeared in the 2006 film Alpha Dog, which was also a central role. Swain appeared in Starz Inside: Sex and the Cinema in 2009, an examination of sex in film. She appeared in the film Noble Things, about country singer Jimmy Wayne Collins, which also starred country singer Lee Ann Womack. Christie Wallace, the main character in the horror/slasher film Fall Down Dead, also appeared in the horror/slasher film Fall Down Dead. In 2010, she appeared in Monte Hellman's romance drama Road to Nowhere. Swain appeared in David Renner's action thriller The Girl from the Naked Eye in 2011.
