Sophia Jane Myles (born 18 March 1980) is an English actress best known for her role in Underworld (2003), Isolde and Darcy in Transformers: Age of Extinction, a student actress, has received critical praise for her television appearances, particularly as Madame de Pompadour in the Doctor Who episode "The Girl in the Fireplace" and Beth Turner in Moonlight.

Early life

Myles was born in London. Jane (née Allan), a retired Church of England vicar in Isleworth, West London, works in educational publishing, and Peter R. Myles, her father. Her paternal grandmother was Russian, and Myles refers to herself as "half-Welsh, half-Russian." She grew up in Notting Hill and attended Fox Primary School. She and her family moved to Isleworth and attended The Green School at the age of 11. Following her success in her A Levels, she gained a scholarship at the University of Cambridge to study philosophy, but she decided to pursue acting after being noticed by Julian Fellowes in a school play and soon after having a small part in The Prince and the Pauper's television production in 1996.

Personal life

Myles was in a 16-year-old relationship with actor Charles Dance, and she also dated Damian Lewis and Paul Wilson from the band Snow Patrol, and she has been involved with comedian Charles Dance, who is 34 years old, from 2004 to 2005. Since filming an episode of Doctor Who, Myles started dating David Tennant. They had split by October 2007, according to the author.

Myles gave birth to a son raised by her partner James Bell, who works for the Bank of England in September. Celia Imrie, Myles' companion and fellow actress, is his son's godmother.

Peter Myles, her father, died on March 21, 2020 after contracting COVID-19.

Myles has appeared in a number of films and television shows since 1996. Myles made her film debut in Mansfield Park (1999) and appeared in Guest House Paradiso (1999). Myles appeared in Heartbeat and Foyle's War as Victoria Abberline in the thriller film From Hell (2001), starring Johnny Depp and Myles as his wife. Myles played a key role in the comedy-romance film The Abduction Club (2002) before moving to Erika in the 2003 vampire film Underworld with Kate Beckinsale, where she reprised the role in the sequel to Underworld: Evolution (2006).

She appeared in Out of Bounds and appeared Lady Penelope in Thunderbirds (2004), the film version of the classic television show of the same name. Myles had the opportunity to appear in either Thunderbirds or Troy, but she ultimately chose the former because "Lady Penelope is such a popular character." Myles appeared in the two-part war drama miniseries Colditz with Damian Lewis and Tom Hardy in 2005. In 2006, she co-starred in the epic romantic drama Tristan & Isolde, which was directed by Ridley Scott.

Myles appeared in "The Girl in the Fireplace," a 2006 Doctor Who episode that is often referred to as one of the series's best episodes. Myles currently plays Rebecca Bishop in the fantasy-romance television series A Discovery of Witches; the first season of Witches was released in 2018 and the second in 2021; a third series is currently filming and waiting for premiere. Myles played Ann Payne, a shadow agent who was nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress respectively in the 2020 Portuguese film Listen, the Portuguese entry for the 93rd Academy Awards, after roles in the films Two Words (2018) and November 1st (2019), for which she was named as the Portuguese entry for the Best International Feature Film. However, the film was disqualified in December 2020 because more than half of its dialogue was in English. Myles reprised her role as Madame de Pompadour in 2020 for a minisode sequel written for her by Steven Moffat and released on YouTube on May 6, 2020.

Myles appeared in the comedy-heist film Decrypted about the kidnap the maker of Bitcoin, alongside Amanda Abbington and Kevin McNally. She appeared in the film All That Glitters in November 2021, portraying a wealthy woman disguised as domestically abused, a nomination that earned her Best Actress and the Gold Movie Awards respectively. In the acclaimed BBC television mini-series A Very British Scandal with Claire Foy and Paul Bettany in December 2021, Myles played Louise Campbell, Duchess of Argyll.
