Wilson grew up in Kenthurst, Parramatta, and Castle Hill. She was a boarder at the Tara Anglican School for Girls. Wilson spent time at a theater in Castle Hill, but she resigned after patrons recognized her after the performance of her first film, Fat Pizza.

Wilson has claimed that her great-aunt, Lillian Bounds, was married to Walt Disney from 1966 until his death in 1966. Wilson backed this assertion in court, though there was no evidence to back it up the assertion; Dale Sheridan, a genealogist, challenged it in court.
Wilson's first job choice was mathematics. "I was very academic at high school and was always good with numbers," she told The Sydney Morning Herald. She studied at the University of New South Wales, graduating in 2009 with a Bachelor of Arts (Theatre and Performance Studies) and a Bachelor of Laws degree. "I just want people to be healthy, especially those that are doing one of my favorite activities in the world—going out to the movies to have fun."

Her age was also incorrectly reported as 29 (when it was actually 35), which she would later admit was something she didn't do to correct. Wilson, on the other hand, had a "very normal, upper-middle-class upbringing" and "adds a touch of 'fantasy' to her life before becoming a household name," according to Woman's Day. The amount of the harm was appealed by Bauer Media. Bauer Media won its appeal on June 14, 2018, but the fees were reduced to $600,000, meaning she had to pay back A$4.1 million and A$60,000 in interest.
