Prabhu Deva Career

Acting career

Prabhu Deva was first introduced to lead roles in Tamil films by director Pavithran in the romantic drama film Indhu (1994). Deva's talent to dance was unquestionably featured in the song sequences, with gaana and disco music later being regularly included in his films. With Shankar's sophomore film, Kadhalan (1994), where he portrayed a young student who first protested his father's father and then an international terrorist. The film was widely lauded for its technical prowess and went on to win four National Film Awards, but A. R. Rahman's songs and Deva's choreography, particularly in the songs "Mukkabla" and "Urvasi Urvasi," became extremely popular across India. Despite starring relative newcomers, Deva's film went on to become the highest grossing Tamil film of 1994, and the commercial success made Deva a bankable actor. The film also saw success in other Indian regional markets, with a Telugu and Hindi version dubbed, generating a demand for Deva in other Indian regional industries.

Although Raasaiya (1995) received poor reviews and collections, he continued to attract big budget films and appeared in two more films with music by Rahman in 1996, Love Birds and Mr. Romeo. Love Birds received a large theatrical audience in foreign countries and received Deva raves for their portrayal. Meanwhile, Mr. Romeo's remuneration was charged at a comparatively high 60 lakhs and appeared in a dual role with Shilpa Shetty and Madhoo. Critics lauded both films' music and dance performances, but the box office put on mumbling performances.

Deva received critical acclaim for his role in Rajiv Menon's romantic drama Minsara Kanavu (1997), where he portrayed a streetwise hairstylist who inadvertently attracted the attention of a young woman, whom he tries to help set up with another man. The film starring Deva along Arvind Swamy and Kajol received four National Film Awards, three Tamil Nadu State Film Awards, and a Filmfare Award mainly for the film's soundtrack by Rahman. Meanwhile, Deva's work in the film "Vennilave" received the National Film Award for Best Choreography. "If you are not a member of Prabhu Deva after this film, it is straightforward to become a fan of Prabhu Deva," a writer for Indolink.com said, though Rediff.com referred to his appearance as "graceful." Minsara Kanavu's good results at the box office, as well as a wide release in Hindi under the name Sapnay. His subsequent release, V. I. P. (1997), a romantic comedy starring an ensemble cast of Abbas, Simran, and Rambha, also did well commercially. "Probably the feel-good movie of 1997," Indolink.com said, "this film is absolutely the coming of age for Prabhu Deva" and that "he has certainly matured since his Kadhalan days and displays a lot more patience and a little bit of comedic grace." During the period, Deva signed Mazhai Vara Poghri, a big-budget bilingual Hindi and Tamil film directed by Juhi Chawla. Despite beginning production, the film was later cancelled.

With his roles in Kaathala (1998), co-starring Kamal Haasan and the drama film Ninai Varai (1999), Deva continued to gain critical acclaim and commercial success. A reviewer from Indolink.com referred to "Prabhu Deva's lovely script and character that he's able to live in" in the previous film. He went on to appear in Guinness World Record-Setting Film Suyamvaram (1999) and Vikraman's hit family drama film Valianta (2004), where critics praised his "histrionic abilities." Deva, along with Jyothika and Real-life brothers Raju Sundaram and Nagendra Prasad, appeared in the Trilingual romantic comedy film directed by K. Subash, The Winners, in 2002.

Deva's interest in the box office began to decline in the early 2000s, when he began to work on less expensive comedy films. Despite receiving critical recognition for his role as a bus conductor in Eazhaiyin Sirippil (2000) and commercial success with his involvement in Sundar C's Ullam Kollai (2002), Manadhai Thirudivittai (2001), and Charlie Chaplin (2002), several of his other Tamil films during the period did not do well financially. He appeared on One Two Three (2002) alongside his brothers in Tamil, Kannada, Telugu, and Telugu, as well as Siddique's triumphant hit Engal Anna (2004) with Vijayakanth. Deva's subsequent work shifted to prioritizing acting roles in various fields, including acting in offbeat roles in Kannada's H2O (2002), alongside Upendra and the Hindi film Agni Varsha (2002) with Amitabh Bachchan. He has also worked in Telugu cinema, appearing in multi-starrer films or as the second lead actor in Santosham (2002), Kalyana Ramudu (2003), and Andaru Dongiru Dongiru (2004).

Deva began to appear in less prominent roles after the success of his directorial ventures. In the dance film Style (2006), he portrayed leading roles. Deva performed a supporting role in Santosh Sivan's Malayalam historical drama film Urumi (2011), which starred Prithviraj, Arya, and Genelia D'Souza in an ensemble cast. The film received critical acclaim, while Deva was lauded for his role with a critic from The Hindu at The Hindu notes: Deva "excels with his standout comic repartee." He continued to make occasional appearances and portrayed leading roles in Dance (2006), ABCD (2013), and its sequel ABCD 2 (2015). The films all turned out well, with a writer stating: "While being regarded as the dance legend by many, Prabhu is still incomparable in dances," for his role in ABCD, the good news is that he also handles dramatic scenes.

After an 11-year absence with the 2016 film Devi, Deva Deva returns to Tamil cinema as an actor, collaborating with director A. L. Vijay. The film was shot simultaneously in Hindi and Telugu, with the titles Abhinetri and Tutak Tutuya. Deva appeared in Thangar Bachan's film Kalavaadiya Pozhuthugal in 2017. In 2017, he debuted Gulaebaghavali (2018) in the Pongal festival. Mercury (2018) and Lakshmi (2018) were followed by a silent film. Charlie Chaplin 2, a sequel to 2002's Charlie Chaplin, was released in 2019. In the film, he debuted as a lyricist. After that, Deva appeared in Devi 2, which is a sequel to Devi. Both Tamannaah and Khamoshi directed by Chakri Toleti simultaneously shot the film in Telugu.

Salman Khan, a remake of the 2017 South Korean film The Outlaws, was directed by Deva in 2021.
