Boris Frederic Cecil Ofuatey-Kodjoe, an Austrian-born actor of German and Ghanaian descent best known for his roles as Kelby in the 2002 film Brown Sugar, the sports-courier agent Damon Carter on Showtime's Soul Food, and a recurring character on FOX's 'The Last Man on Earth's Boris Frederic Cecil's Last Man on Earth.

He currently stars on BET's Real Husbands of Hollywood and Station 19's Grey's Anatomy spin-off, Station 19.

Early life

Kodjoe was born in Vienna, Austria, and the uncle of Ursula, a German psychologist of partial Jewish descent, and Eric Kodjoe, a Ghanaian physician who is a member of the Nzema people. Boris Pasternak, a Russian poet and writer, is one of his namesake. The matrilineal grandmother of Kodjoe was Jewish and was killed in the Holocaust, and his maternal grandmother survived the war in hiding. When Kodjoe was six years old, his parents divorced. He grew up in Freiburg, Germany, in the immediate vicinity of Freiburg. Patrick is his brother, and Nadja and Lara are two sisters.

Personal life

In Gundelfingen, Germany, Kodjoe married Soul Food: The Series co-star Nicole Ari Parker on May 21, 2005. In March 2005, she gave birth to their first child, a girl. She has spina bifida, a condition that has been present since birth. In October 2006, Parker gave birth to their second child, a boy. Kodjoe and his wife are members of Cascade United Methodist Church in Atlanta, Georgia. The family lives in Los Angeles, California. On a February 2019 episode of Lip Sync Battle, Parker and Kodjoe competed against one another.

Kodjoe is fluent in German, English, Russian, French, and Italian, and he also speaks a little Spanish.

Kodjoe earned a bachelor's degree in marketing at Virginia Commonwealth University on a tennis scholarship and graduated in 1996 with a bachelor's degree in marketing. He is currently the ninth in school history with 75 career singles victories. With 66, he tied for third in doubles victories, and third all-time. Boris' tennis aspirations were put into jeopardy due to a back injury, but he was soon signed as a model and soon after began acting. He appeared in TLC's music video for "Red Light Special" in 1995.

Kodjoe, who was listed as one of the "50 Most Beautiful People in the World" by People magazine in 2002, is perhaps best known as one of the 7 regular cast members of the showtime drama Soul Food, which aired from 2000 to 2004. He appeared in Brown Sugar in 2002 and appeared in the short-lived sitcom Second Time Around with his Soul Food co-star Nicole Ari Parker, whom he later married. In the film The Gospel, he portrayed David Taylor, the wayward son of Pastor Fred Taylor, in October 2005. He appeared in a play called Whatever She Wants starring Vivica A. Fox also appeared on Nip/Tuck's fifth season. In the 2009 science fiction film Surprises, he played a supporting role. In the 2010 J. Abrams-produced NBC TV series Undercovers, Kodjoe and Gudjoe starred as a husband-and-wife cover agent team, but the show lasted less than one season. In the film Resident Evil: Afterlife, he appeared as Luther. In 2012, he made a guest appearance on the television show Franklin & Bash.

In the BET comedy parody series Real Husbands of Hollywood, Kodjoe appeared as a fictional version of himself from 2013 to 2016. He appeared on ABC primetime soap opera Members Only, created by Susannah Grant in 2014, but the program never aired. In 2015, Kodjoe began a regular guest appearance on Fox's The Last Man on Earth television series. Kodjoe appeared in all three seasons of the CBS medical drama Dr. Will Campbell from 2016 to 2018.

Kodjoe appeared in the second season of the Grey's Anatomy spin-off series Station 19. Since his appearance in the season premiere as the new fire captain, Robert Sullivan, he was promoted to a series regular in October. He has been promoted to Battalion Chief in "Eulogy."
