Olly Alexander Life

Olly Alexander (born Oliver Alexander Thornton; 15 July 1990) is an English musician, singer, songwriter, actor, and LGBT activist.

Years & Years is the lead singer of the synth-pop band Years & Years.

Early life

Alexander was born in Harrogate, North Yorkshire, England. Vicki Thornton, his mother, was one of the festival's founders. Alexander attended St John's Primary School in Coleford and Monmouth Comprehensive School. While attending Monmouth Comprehensive School, he appeared in two school productions, including Guys and Dolls, as Benny, and The Caucasian Chalk Circle as the Corporal. Alexander studied Performing Arts at the Hereford College of Arts after completing his GCSEs. He wrote his first poem on his father's Casio keyboard aged 10. When he was younger, his parents separated, and Ben, his brother, who is autistic, was taken up solely by his mother.

When auditioning for a role in British TV series Skins, he obtained the services of an agent when he was 16. Alexander said in a YouTube video posted by NylonMagazineTV that he dropped out of the Hereford College of Arts to pursue his acting career as parts were offered: "I started acting when I was young; it just sort of happened." I went out of school to work around the world, which was amazing." "I really wanted to be a singer or a guitarist." Then actress became a performer. I'd never set my heart on it. I'm still trying to figure it out... I was really disliked at school because I was completely bullied. However, the weird kids do well in drama class, so you are never bullied in drama class. It's a secure place to live. Owen Jones, a Guardian columnist, interviewed Alexander on his mental stability. During a 2021 interview in the same journal, he debating his bullying, bulimia, and early life experiences.

Advocacy, politics and personal life

Alexander has promoted safer sex and HIV testing, as well as anti-LGBT bullying campaigns in various interviews and charity campaigns. From age 13 to present, he has also spoken out about his own battles with depression, self-harm, eating disorders, and anxiety. He is openly gay, and he screened a BBC Three documentary in 2017 that explored the connection between being gay and the growth of mental illness. He also spoke about his bulimia. Alexander was part of Sport Relief's effort to raise concerns of mental health alongside fellow celebrities Nadiya Hussain and Stephen Fry.

Alexander identifies himself as a "true left-winger" and claims he "had a crush on" Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn in 2016.

Alexander was in a relationship with musician Neil Milan Amin-Smith, who was in Clean Bandit from May 2015 to June. They did not cancel at the end of 2015 due to scheduling conflicts, but not on tour or recording.

Alexander performed with his band Years & Years in the rainbow ensemble at the Los Angeles International Festival in 2016 and made news for his spur-of-the-moment address in the aftermath of the Orlando nightclub shooting.

Alexander was named "Live Act Of The Year" in September 2018 by GQ in September. The award was presented to him by Hélo Letissier, and Alexander, in his acceptance address, fought for the LGBTQ community and Mental Health Awareness Month, especially in regards to males.

Alexander took part in a video campaign "The Flag We Shouldn't Be Proud Of" for World Suicide Prevention Day, displaying a rainbow flag with two colors ripped from it, and being quoted as "This is the flag we shouldn't be proud of." We don't want to die to suicide by a flag that represents the two in six LGBTQ people we encounter.

Alexander and Alastair Campbell discussed his struggles with self-harm and eating disorders, his experiences with homophobia in 2018, as well as Donald Trump's political views on Brexit and Donald Trump in October 2018. In the interview, Trump said he voted Remain in the 2016 referendum, supported Corbyn as Prime Minister, and labeled Trump "repugnant" and "repulsive."

Alexander spoke at the Pyramid Stage during Years & Years' appearance at the 2019 Glastonbury Festival, calling for the removal of bigotry, ableism, and misogym. Fans and journalists lauded the address.
