Early life

After Hurricane Katrina made landfall in New Orleans, she and her family migrated to Houston, Texas, in 2005. Normani attended private school as a child and was homeschooled in sixth grade. She competed in dance, gymnastics, and beauty pageants from the age of three. She and her mother travelled between Houston and Los Angeles for acting, singing, and dancing auditions. She recorded a few songs, one at the age of 13, and appeared in the HBO film Treme. Normani has said that dancing was her "first passion."

Personal life

Normani is a Christian. She lives in Los Angeles, California, in the San Fernando Valley.

Normani was racially bullied on social media after an interview that she had "taken out of context." Camila Cabello's former bandmate Camila Cabello's furious supporters dismissed her for referring to Cabello as "quirky." Fans of Normani slurred the N word and photographshopped her photographs to depict her as a slave being "whipped, beaten, and lynched," according to Normani. Because of the occurrence, she was prompted to deactivate her Twitter account for a short time.

Camila Cabello's racist tweet and Tumblr posts from 2012 as she and Normani were in Fifth Harmony resurfaced in December 2019. Normani responded to the blogs in a February 2020 interview with Rolling Stone: "I struggled with writing about it because I didn't want it to be a part of my story, but I am a black woman, who is a part of an entire generation with a similar story." "I said that this particular situation didn't concern me," she confessed. "It was shocking" that this came from a place that was supposed to be a safe haven and a sisterhood. [...] It took her days for her to understand what I was doing online and then years for her to take responsibility for the inflammatory tweets that recently appeared." This made me feel second to the one with her supporters, whether or not it was her intention. [...] I hope there is a sincere explanation of why this was so intolerable."
