Early life
Nicole Prascovia Valiente was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to Alfonso Valiente of Filipino descent and Rosemary Elikolani Frederick of Native Hawaiian, Ukrainian, and Polish descent. When Nicole was two years old, Alfonso left the family. Rosemary married German-American Gary Scherzinger, who then adopted Nicole and gave her the surname she later adopted. Keala is her younger sister. They migrated to Louisville, Kentucky, where her mother was a clerk and her stepfather was a welder at age six. Scherzinger describes her upbringing as difficult, as she grew up "without much money" and aided her parents by doing local modelling jobs, and being a member of a local amusement park in the Kentucky Kingdom. Scherzinger was raised as Roman Catholic and held "strong religious convictions" and went to church twice a week in order to make her mother proud, and her grandfather was a priest.
She appeared in her first professional play, La Bête, at the age of 14. She graduated from the Youth Performing Arts School (YPAS) at duPont Manual High School in 1996, where she appeared in many productions, including Alice in Wonderland, in which she played Alice. Scherzinger was shocked she was chosen "against a girl with blue eyes and blonde hair." She was inducted into the DuPont Manual Alumni Hall of Fame in 2007 as one of the youngest inductees into the class of 2007. Scherzinger has given the YPAS a $2,000 per year namesake scholarship since 2013. She enrolled in Wright State University and majored in theater arts with a dance minor after earning a scholarship. Scherzinger gained a lead role in regional performances of the musicals Chicago, Guys and Dolls, and Show Boat during this time. Scherzinger was recruited by Days of the New band's founder Travis Meeks to perform vocals on their self-titled second studio album in her final year of college. Meeks wanted a singer who would "deliver some more modern/operatic sounds and sounds." Scherzinger dropped out of college due to the album's support tour. Meeks began to develop creatively, claiming she "didn't appear to worry about knowing music very well" as she came to an end, but the tour's conclusion said she is a "amazing entertainer." The Wright State Alumni Association presented Scherzinger with the 2017 Alumna of the Year Award in 2018.
Personal life
Scherzinger admits she is shy and hides her personal life from others, but she declines to answer questions about her personal life. "My music is the only place I'm curious about it," Scherzinger says when asked. Nick Hexum, the lead singer of 311, was engaged by the Scherzinger from 2000 to 2004. After meeting at the 2007 MTV Europe Music Awards in Munich, Scherzinger began a high-profile relationship with Formula One World Champion Lewis Hamilton. Their on-and-off relationship of seven years was a tabloid fixture in the British press. In February 2015, the two couples split for the final time. In 2016, she was involved in a professional friendship with Bulgarian tennis player Grigor Dimitrov, which ended in early 2019. Scherzinger revealed her friendship with former Scottish rugby player Thom Evans in January 2020.
Scherzinger wrote about her experiences with bulimia during the Pussycat Dolls' in late 2012. She suffered with body dysmorphia until an early photo shoot with the group triggered her bulimic behavior, which lasted nearly a decade. She eventually recovered from the disorder with the help of therapists and life coaches.
Scherzinger supported Barack Obama's 2008 presidential campaign, appearing in will.i.am's "Yes We Can" (2008), which was inspired by Obama's address after the 2008 New Hampshire primary. She has taken a public Pro-Life stand and refuses to identify herself as a feminist. "I'm just for women," she says. "I'm also concerned about the human race in general." Scherzinger, a feminist campaigner, released a "love letter" to the LGBTQ community in 2017, in which she praised the community for "standing united against adversity and [for being] a community that unites for change."
Career
Scherzinger's mother was shown a commercial for the WB's show Popstars USA, a reality series with the intention to chronicle the group's origins until the band was revealed and had finalized its membership due to the hours of television exposure the group would have received. Scherzinger, who was initially reluctant to audition, later decided against it as an opportunity to fly to Los Angeles. Whitney Houston's version of Dolly Parton's "I Will Always Love You" appeared at her audition, and she, Ana Maria Lombo, Maile Misajon, Ivette Sosa, and Rosanna Tavarez formed the girl group Eden's Crush. "Get Over Yourself," the group's debuting single on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 2001, debuted at number eight on the Billboard Hot 100, making it the first female act to debut at number one on the Hot 100 Singles Sales chart. Popstars (2001), their debut studio album, debuted at number six on the Billboard 200 chart. They went on tour with 'N Sync and Jessica Simpson, but by the time the year's end, their company was bankrupt and the group disbanded, but before that, they'd disbanded. Will.i.am, the front man of The Black Eyed Peas, approached Scherzinger to join the club but her then-boyfriend, Nick Hexum, declined. Following the band's dissolution, Scherzinger took a detour in acting and appeared in television shows such as My Wife and Kids (2002) and Chasing Papi (2003), which culminated in a cameo.
Scherzinger left for a solo recording deal in August 2003 and headed to Arista Records in New York with a demo CD of her own written work under her Hawaiian family name Nicole Kea. A blackout in the city had stifled her work, and she was eventually forced to leave. Meanwhile, Robin Antin, the maker of the burlesque band the Pussycat Dolls, and record producer Jimmy Iovine and Ron Fair, began a joint venture with Interscope Records, where they, along with record producer Jimmy Iovine and Ron Fair, launched an open audition for a separate recording group. Will.i.am recommended Scherzinger to Iovine, but she failed to land a solo career in December 2003, along with Melanie Thornton, Ashley Roberts, Jessica Sutta, and Kimberly Wyatt. Scherzinger, the band's lead singer, handled the majority of the vocals and was the only member of the group to have songwriting credit on their debut album PCD, which was released in September 2005. The album was preceded by "Don't Cha," which became their international debut and debuted at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. Other number one hits, "Stickwitu" and "Buttons," were among the latter of which were nominated for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards.
Scherzinger also signed a global publishing deal with Universal Music Publishing Group in February 2006, which would fund her future songwriting. Scherzinger's debut solo album was a feature on Avant's "Lie About Us" and later collaborated with Diddy on "Come to Me," the Scherzinger's first solo top-ten hit on the US Billboard Hot 100. Scherzinger revealed in March 2007 that her debut studio album, Name is Nicole, will be released in late summer. Four singles were released from the project, including T.I., "Baby Love," "Megavillain," and "Puakeni"), but none of them made a big impact on Billboard charts, although "Baby Love" was a moderate success in international territories, despite T.I.'s involvement. Scherzinger decided not to release any more singles from the album, and her Name Is Nicole was eventually shelved and put the Doll's second album in focus.
Doll Domination, the Pussycat Dolls' second and final album, was released in the United States on September 23, 2008, and peaked at number four on the Billboard 200. The album contained singles "When I Grow Up" and "I Hate This Part," which peaked at number nine and eleven on the Billboard Hot 100, respectively.
