Nancy Benoit Life

Nancy Elizabeth Benoit (née Toffoloni, formerly Daus and Sullivan; May 17, 1964 – June 22, 2007) was an American professional wrestling valet and model.

She was best known for her appearances with Extreme Championship Wrestling and World Championship Wrestling in the mid-1990s, specifically under the ring name Woman. In June 22, 2007, she was killed by her husband, wrestler Chris Benoit, who killed their 7-year-old son Daniel on June 23, 2007, then committed suicide on June 24, 2007.

Early life

Toffoloni, a student at DeLand High School, worked answering phones at State Farm Insurance. When George Napolitano needed a beautiful young girl for the front of the pro-wrestling magazine Wrestling All Stars in June 1984, colleague photographer Bill Otten suggested the 20-year-old Nancy Toffoloni Daus for the role. Toffoloni, a model, sat down and talked to her then-husband Jim often. She had also been selling workshops at the Orlando shows and appeared as Apartment Wrestler "Para" in Stanley Weston's Sports Review Wrestling magazine. It was at this shoot that she met Kevin Sullivan, who eventually wanted her to be a part of his wrestling entourage. She then became an on-air valet, adopting the ring name "Fallen Angel" after months of convincing.

Personal life

Benoit had been married to and divorced Jim Daus before his marriage to Kevin Sullivan in 1985.

When she first married to Kevin Sullivan in early 1997, she was having an extramarital affair with Chris Benoit. After her divorce from Sullivan in 1997, she and Benoit became engaged in 1997, but Benoit referred to her as only his fiancée even after they were married. She oversaw her husband's work from their Atlanta home.

On February 25, 2000, she gave birth to their son Daniel Christopher Benoit. She married Chris on November 23, 2000. She filed for divorce in May 2003, citing the union as "irvocably broken" and citing "cruel care" as the cause. The woman dropped the case in August 2003, as well as a restraining order for her husband.

Nancy Benoit underwent neck and neck fusion surgery with Lloyd Youngblood in December 2006, the same surgeon who had earlier performed a 3–hour neck surgery on Nancy's husband Chris on June 28, 2001.

Hustler released nude photographs of her from a shoot she took when she was 20 years old in response to Nancy Benoit's death in 2007. The length of the performances caused controversies, prompting critics to suspect that Hustler owner Larry Flynt was attempting to profit from the event. Hustler's relatives brought court action against him. "The photographs published by [Flynt] neither relate to the incident of public fear [the murders] nor do they relate to the period of time when Benoit was declared, against her will, and are therefore the object of public scrutiny."

Nancy Benoit Career

Professional wrestling career

Toffoloni made her in-ring debut in Miami, Florida, on June 30, 1984, when she was billed "Fallen Angel" for Florida Championship Wrestling.

Toffoloni became part of Kevin Sullivan's "Satanists," which also included wrestlers The Lock, Luna Valiant, The Purple Haze, and Sir Oliver Humperdink. Toffoloni and Kevin Sullivan toured around the country, using the "Satanist" gimmick for promotions such as Angelo Savoldi's ICW and Southwest Championship Wrestling. In 1985, the two were married. Debbie Combs of Hawaii wrestled Debbie Combs in NWA Polynesian Wrestling, 1985, a contest that she lost by disqualification.

Nancy Sullivan appeared on WCW as a "fan" of Rick Steiner's Robin Green, sporting a Steiner T-shirt and large glasses. She would sit in the audience and would chat with Steiner if he appeared. She eventually vowed to turn against Kevin Sullivan by adopting the term "Woman" and becoming the Doom's boss (Butch Reed and Ron Simmons). After leaving Doom, she aligned herself with Ric Flair and the Four Horsemen.

Nancy and Kevin Sullivan, along with Nancy and Kevin Sullivan, competed in Extreme Championship Wrestling, where she reverted to the ring name "Woman" in late-1993. The ECW Tag Team Championship was won by Sullivan and The Tazmaniac in December 1993. They were in the championship until 1994, when they were defeated by The Public Enemy.

Woman took over The Sandman after Sullivan left ECW in spring 1994. The Sandman's character was disconcerted from his wife and valet, Peaches, who had left him after he mistakenly struck her during a match while temporarily blinded. A woman drove a wedge between The Sandman and Peaches, a woman who told him that Peaches was cheating with Tommy Cairo. Woman will open his beers and light his cigarettes prior to matches, in keeping with The Sandman's story. She began carrying a Singapore cane with which she would attack The Sandman's opponents. Woman and The Sandman lost to Cairo and Peaches in a Singapore Cane match, after which Peaches caned The Sandman in the groin until Woman threw salt in her eyes, enabling the Sandman to recover and cane Cairo and Peaches.

Since being kissed Woman in mid-1994, The Sandman began feuding with Tommy Dreamer. On October 1, the Sandman was apparently blinded when the Dreamer thrust a lit cigarette into his eye and then caned him in the chest. Woman revealed that she was putting The Sandman into the fire because he was now "useless." A guilt-stricken Dreamer challenged him to a match on November 5 after Cairo mocked The Sandman. Peaches attempted to reconcile with The Sandman at the same time. A woman ended the peace by caning Peaches and threatening The Sandman. The Sandman revealed that he wasn't really blinded and assaulted Dreamer with his estrangement from Woman a plot to pit Dreamer and Cairo against one another.

Woman at Three Way Dance in April 1995 left The Sandman for the second time in life, allying herself with Shane Douglas. On April 15, she helped The Sandman defeat Douglas for his second ECW World Heavyweight Championship by striking him in the chest with a Singapore cane, revealing the turn to be another ruse. Woman began carrying the ECW World Heavyweight Championship to ringside following The Sandman's victory. In a string of bouts with Cactus Jack between mid-1995 and 1999, she helped The Sandman defend his championship. She began directing The Sandman's ally, ECW World Television Champion 2 Cold Scorpio, in September. The Sandman began feuding with Mikey Whipwreck, during which Woman became notably ill while watching The Sandman cane Whipwreck. The Sandman's reign lasted until October 28, when he lost to Whipwreck in a ladder match after Stunning Steve Austin barred Women from participating.

2 Cold Scorpio defeated Rocco Rock in a singles battle to win the ECW World Tag Team Championship in 1995, and then selected The Sandman as his partner. In a three-way dance with Whipwreck and Austin from December to Dismember on December 9, the Sandman regained the ECW World Heavyweight Championship, giving Woman control of both three championships. Whipwreck defeated 2 Cold Scorpio in a singles match at Holiday Hell on December 29, where the World Tag Team Championships were on the line. The Sandman's third stint as World Heavyweight Champion lasted until January 27, 1996, when he lost to Raven. Woman revealed in February that she was returning to WCW, collaborating with The Sandman and 2 Cold Scorpio.

On the 1996 episode of WCW Monday Nitro, Nancy Sullivan (as "Woman") made her return to WCW as one of many women stood in the aisle and waved as Hulk Hogan and Randy Savage came to the ring. In the then-current version of the Four Horsemen, she took on Savage during his match against Chris Benoit and rejoined Flair, Brian Pillman, and Benoit. Miss Elizabeth was also in charge of the stable.

Pillman had left the Horsemen in 1996, but they did introduce Steve McMichael and his wife Debra in June, which didn't go well with Woman. The two bickered in their next scene, not getting along in general. The Four Horsemen were often allowed interview time on Nitro, and when it came time for Debra to speak on the mic, she'd often delve into a discussion of Woman's appearance and fashion sense, usually when the two were not within range of each other. Despite the high stress, the two bosses never had a physical altercation.

She began an on-screen romance with Benoit, who at the time was embroiled in a feud with her real-life husband Kevin Sullivan. During a post-match interview with Sullivan on December 7, a home movie of the couple canoodling in a kitchen was shown in front of him. "You can't find me" and "I'm my own woman," a woman mocked Sullivan, while Benoit wrote: "You consider yourself the master of human chess." Well, my bishop took your queen from your throne. Sullivan came out speechless after the video, and his manager Jimmy Hart led him off stage. At ringside, the feud between Benoit and Sullivan culminated in Woman clashing with Sullivan's then-valet Jacquelyn. The two ladies were strapped together, fired at each other, and used the strap connecting them as a weapon against the men in one match.

The on-screen relationship eventually developed to a true-life story off-screen. Because of this, Kevin Sullivan is often referred to as "booked his own divorce." In 1997, the two married. Sullivan lost a retirement match to Benoit; his intention was to withdraw from in-ring action and concentrate on booking.

On Monday, the woman's last WCW appearance (and official wrestling appearance as Woman) took place on May 26, 1997, when she joined Benoit and Jimmy Hart in the ring for a confrontation with Jimmy Hart about Sullivan's whereabouts, although she wasn't in the area. On the following week's program, Benoit appeared alone on ringside alone. There was no reason given for Woman's mysterious disappearance, and she was never seen on WCW television again after being in charge of him for a little over a year.
