It was awarded internationally with seven platinum and three gold medals, including triple-Platinum by the British Phonographic Industry, which has sold over 4 million copies worldwide, and its best-selling solo album of any Spice Girls member.

Early life

Melanie Jayne Chisholm was born in Whiston, Lancashire, and she was the only daughter of Joan O'Neill, who served as a secretary and personal assistant, and has been performing in music bands since she was 14, as well as Alan Chisholm, a fitter at the Otis Elevator Company. When Chisholm was four years old, her parents married in 1971 and divorced in 1978. Her mother returned to work and had more children, one of whom is racing driver Paul O'Neill, who was born when Chisholm was six years old. She grew up in Widnes, Cheshire, attending Brookvale Junior School in nearby Runcorn and Fairfield High School in Widnes. She enrolled in a degree programme in dance, singing, drama, and musical theatre at the Dominion Bird College of Performing Arts in London after school. She reacted to an advertisement in The Stage hosted by Chris and Bob Herbert, who were planning to form a new girl group later on to become the Spice Girls. She left college just shy of completing her three-year degree and obtained teaching qualifications in tap and modern theatre dance with the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing.

Personal life

Chisholm has talked about her bouts with clinical depression and an eating disorder. To Contact Music, she addressed her eating disorder, saying, "I hammered the gym for three hours a day." It was a way of running away from not thinking. I felt like a robot. I was only a size 10 when the newspapers started calling me 'Sumo Spice,'. But because all the skepticism had sparked, it got worse, and I've gone up to a size 14." "It took me such a long time to recover," Chisholm said in a 2022 interview with The Cut. I would never want to be arrogant enough to say that I'm all right because I'm always aware that they might return. I've certainly learned how to look after myself. A healthy work-life balance is impossible to achieve at times. I'm sure I'm overtired or work's too tense, I can feel it slipping away. We all agree that self-care is important, but keeping me on track with everything is so important for me.

Chisholm had a month-long friendship with singer Robbie Williams in 1997. In 1998, she dated record producer Jake Davies. She was expected to have had a friendship with Red Hot Chili Peppers lead singer Anthony Kiedis later this year, but Chisholm said in 2022 that they had only been acquaintances. Inspired by his friendship with Chisholm, Kiedis wrote "Emit Remmus," which is "summer time" spelled backwards. The song was included on the album Californication. Chisholm and Jason "J" Brown of the boy band Five had an on-again, off-again relationship in 2000.

Chisholm had been in a ten-year relationship with Thomas Starr. In 2012, the couple split. Chisholm gave birth to her first child, a daughter, in February 2009. Chisholm admitted that the arrival of her child was a turning point in her life: "Being a mother was so liberating because it wasn't about me." It made me realize that I had a great deal to her, but that I also owe a great deal to myself. I had to pamper myself more as her teacher."

Chisholm was in a relationship with Joe Marshall, who also served as her boss from 2015 to 2022. In August 2022, the couple married.

Chisholm is a fan of Liverpool F.C. Having completed the London Triathlon twice, we are an amateur triathlete.

Chisholm confessed to sexually assaulted in 1997, on the eve of the first Girl Power! Live in Istanbul on October 1997. Chisholm told Elizabeth Day's podcast How to Fail: "I treated] myself to a massage in the hotel, and what happened to me right away because there were other things to worry about." I was feeling attacked, I was very afraid, and I was ashamed. [...] I do want to talk about it because it has affected me. But I buried it."

They toured record labels in London and Los Angeles in 1995 and then signed a Virgin contract. Spice's debut album, which debuted in more than 17 countries around the world, was a huge international commercial success, and was named multi-platinum in 27 countries. The album was based on the belief of Girl Power, and it was compared to Beatlemania at the time. The album's total number reached 30 million copies in the world, making it the most popular album in music history by a girl group and one of the most influential albums of all time. "Wannabe" was the first single in 37 countries to debut in 37 countries, as well as "Say You'll Be There," "Who Do You Think You Are" and "Mama" followed.

Spiceworld's second album, "Spice Up Your Life" and "Too Much," the group's first two hits singles on the UK charts, a record of musical groups all time, made it to the group's second consecutive top single. The album was a best-seller in the world, with 20 million copies selling around the world. Spiceworld: The Movie, the company's second most watched movie of the year, also starred in their own film, Spiceworld: The Movie, which grossed $100 million at the box office worldwide and became the second most watched film of the year. Chisholm learns about the formidable- looking Bilsborough in an upcoming edition of the hit genealogy show Who Do You Think You Are? She told the programme: 'My great-grandmother Mary is listed as being a money lender, and I really don't know what that means. I imagine some big burly guy battering your door down to get the money back, and that was what my great-grandmother was doing.' Bilsborough was one of more than 1,300 money lenders - the vast majority of them women - operating in Liverpool in the 1920s and 30s. The mother of nine was herself living in dire poverty. By loaning small sums to neighbours, she was able to feed her family.
