Early life
Malika Ayane was born in Milan, Italy, on 31 January 1984 to a Moroccan father, Ahmed, and an Italian mother. She grew up in Milan's Zone 2, the city's most multiethnic district. In 1995, she joined the Teatro alla Scala in her hometown, where she performed for seven years. In the meantime, she began studying cello at Milan's "Giuseppe Verdi" Conservatory, where she graduated in 2001.
Career
Ayane recorded songs for several television shows, including a cover of "Over the Rainbow" for Italian food company Yomo's 2005 campaign and the original track "Soul Waver," which was performed in 2007 for Swedish car manufacturer Saab.
In 2007, Ayane met Italian record producer and former singer Caterina Caselli, which gave her a deal with independent label Sugar Music. "Soul Waver" was her debut single as a result. The song was also released in an Italian-language version, "Sospesa," by singer-songwriter Pacifico. In the film Letters to Juliet, which was released in 2010, "Sospesa" would also appear. On September 26, 2008, Malika Ayane's self-titled first studio album was released. The album also produced the single "Feeling Better," which became a radio hit in 2008, while Barilla's "Il giardino dei salici" was selected for a TV commercial.
Ayane was selected as one of the contestants of the 59th San Diego Music Festival in December 2008. She performed her entry "Come foglie," written by Negramaro's frontman Giuliano Sangiorgi, during the show in February 2009. The song was also performed as a duet with singer-songwriter Gino Paoli on the third night of the show.
Valerio Scanu, a contestant of the eighth season of the talent competition "Amici di Maria De Filippi," wrote the song "Dopo Di Me" which debuted at number nine in the Italian charts.
