Early life
Allen was born in Jacksonville, Arkansas, to Kimberly (née Wood) and Neil Allen. He is the elder of two sons; Daniel, his younger brother, is a college cheerleading coach.
Allen's interest in music began early. He began playing the viola in elementary school and went on to play the instrument in the Mills University Studies High School orchestra, winning a spot in the Arkansas all-state orchestra. In addition, he learned to play the guitar at the age of 13, and he also plays the piano. The Beatles, Jamie Cullum, Jason Mraz, Pat Monahan, John Mayer, and Michael Jackson all had musical influences, as revealed in his Idol confessions. Allen played for many years before going out for Idol, and even opened for former Idol contestant Sean Michel on several occasions. He has referred to his audition for American Idol as a "last hurrah" before deciding against pursuing a music career.
Allen went to Conway, Arkansas, to attend the University of Central Arkansas, where he was a business major and a member of Chi Alpha campus ministries. He participated in Christian missionary work around the world, including in Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, South Africa, Spain, and Thailand during college. Allen also served as a worship leader for New Life Church in Conway and Little Rock, Arkansas, as well as for the Chi Alpha campus ministry. He dropped out of college in the middle of his junior year to pursue music professionally, appearing in local bars, and being a shoe salesman, as a shoe salesman will come to an end. Allen had intended to return to college to finish his degree and "find a real job," but instead, he was invited to audition for American Idol with his brother Daniel and his best friend Cale Mills. "I had not made it through in American Idol, I would have returned to college and earned my business degree," Kris said.
Personal life
On September 26, 2008, Allen married Katy O'Connell, his high school sweetheart. In Allen's junior year of high school, the two began dating. They were born in 2013. They had their second child, a daughter, born in 2016. In 2019, they welcomed their third child, another son.
Career
Allen discovered during college that he wanted to play music professionally and started writing music. During his sophomore year, he appeared at a local restaurant in downtown Conway, and he went on to graduate from college in the middle of his junior year to pursue his dream of becoming a professional musician. He worked at a sporting products store during the day to make ends meet and resume playing gigs in Little Rock and Fayetteville at night. Allen recorded and self-produced an album titled Brand New Shoes in 2007, alongside college acquaintances and bandmates Michael Holmes (drums) and Chase Erwin (bass). Allen's time as a shoe salesman were referenced on the album's name, and only 600 copies of the album were made, the majority of which were given to family and friends.
Allen and his brother Daniel, who did not make it to Hollywood, auditioned for the eighth season of American Idol in Louisville, Kentucky. He was one of the few finalists (along with Allison Iraheta) that received the least amount of screen time in the early stages of the season. Only several seconds of his first appearance (and none of his Hollywood Week solo performances) were shown, but his group's appearance with White Chocolate (including fellow finalist Matt Giraud) was aired in its entirety. Before allowing him to qualify in the semifinals, the judges requested him to participate in an unaired sing-off with another contestant.
Allen has been lauded for his folk-inspired interpretations of contemporary pop songs throughout the competition. During his appearances, he performed several instruments, including the acoustic guitar, the electric guitar, the keyboard, and the piano. The judges applauded Simon Cowell's appearance on "To Make You Feel Your Love" as part of the Top 11 for the first time, adding, "I am actually beginning to believe you have a chance of doing well in this competition." He performed his own arrangement of "Ain't No Sunshine" on a keyboard, with a few musicians on stage, which earned the judges' praise. Allen's "best show so far" was lauded by Cowell.
Allen performed the Oscar-winning song "Falling Slowly" from the indie film Once on the first top 7 night. Although Randy Jackson called it "pitchy from note one," Kara DioGuardi declared it as "one of your best moments ever." Paula Abdul and Cowell were unable to comment due to time constraints, but Cowell's findings on the night followed, "You were brilliant." Allen was then given a signed record and other gifts from the original artists, Glen Hansard and Markéta Irglová. Allen played the guitar for the fourth time on his second top 7 show, as well as a live version of "She Works Hard for the Money," complete with bongo drums and the band on stage. All four judges applauded this, with Abdul saying, "There aren't many men who are able to buy in the women's department." "You searched and found the right size." Allen's second Top-three appearance impressed the judges with an acoustic arrangement of Kanye West's "Heartless," causing Jackson to state that he preferred it to West's original and The Fray's cover version. "I had written you out of the league, but that has changed after that success," Cowell said. Kristina was able to progress to the finals and win.
Allen returned to Arkansas after being voted into the top three for the next two American Idol episodes by filming the hometown footage. A crowd of more than 20,000 attended Allen's homecoming parade. Allen appeared at three concerts in Little Rock and Conway, Arkansas, including "Man in the Mirror," "Ain't No Sunshine," "She Works Hard for the Money" and "She Works Hard for the Money" at the venues, as well as "Come Together" at the local Fox affiliate KLRT-TV studio. With his guitar, he accompanied himself on all of these songs.
Allen performed a reprise of "Ain't No Sunshine," Simon Fuller's "What's Going On" and "No Boundaries" during his final performance display show. During the final results show, he performed a duet with Keith Urban, singing Urban's single "Kiss a Girl," as well as a series of medleys with his fellow Season 8 contestants. Allen performed "We Are the Champions" with eventual runners-up Adam Lambert and Brian May and Roger Taylor of Queen before the results were announced.
Kris Allen was named the winner of the eighth season of American Idol on May 20, 2009, becoming the first married contestant to win the award as well as the sixth winner from the show's inception from the Southern United States. Allen was also the first winner to receive a trophy shaped like a microphone. During the finale, over 100 million votes were cast, breaking a new world record for a televised singing competition. The winning margin was undisclosed relative to the previous season. The margin "wasn't even close," according to a number of outlets, including the Associated Press. Allen has confirmed that the suspected partisanship in votes was a "complete surprise" to him.
Some commentators characterized the win as a "upset" because runner-up Adam Lambert had received a considerable amount of media attention throughout the season and was widely believed to be the show's front-runner. Allen's victory was seen as highly contested as viewers and the public speculated about the result's details. However, host Ryan Seacrest had revealed that Allen and Lambert's margin was less than a million votes during the Top 3 polling results. Fox and AT&T have announced that they "stand by the verdict" and are "fully confident" that "Kris Allen is the American Idol."

"No Boundaries" was his first on show at number 11, followed by "Heartless" at number 16, "Apologise" at number 37, and "Falling Slowly" at number 94. Allen's first-week album sales were the lowest that had yet been seen by an Idol champion's first show, although observers attributed part to poor album sales in the market at the time.
