Club career
Sá's father, who was born in Braga, completed his education with Madeira's Martimo, joining the team at the age of 18. He made his professional debut with the B team on January 23, 2013 and played the full 90 minutes against Oliveirense in the Segunda Liga championship.
Sá was called to the main squad by manager Pedro Martins in the 2013 off-season. He played his first game in the Primeira Liga on August 18th, defeating Benfica by 2–1 at home, and held his position for the following matchday, a 3–0 loss at Porto.
Sá acted as an understudy to Frenchman Romain Salin during his time in Funchal.
Both Sá and teammate Moussa Marega joined Porto on four-and-a-half years, with the former's services securing for €1.5 million on January 25. He was second in his early days to Spanish international Iker Casillas.
Sá made his UEFA Champions League debut on October 17th, with the opposition losing by 3–2 to RB Leipzig and committing a blunder in the eighth minute, which resulted in the opposition's first goal. He was the starter from that point forward, but he lost his place again after a 5–0 home loss to Liverpool in the same league.
Sárgio Conceiço, Sá's manager, was deemed surplus to demands on August 31, 2018, and he joined Olympiacos on a season-long loan. As the team was coached by compatriot and former Martimo boss Martins, he became the first choice over Andreas Gianniotis straight after arriving.
Sá has agreed to a four-year contract on May 15, 2019. During the year, he maintained a total of 18 clean sheets as the Piraeus team won the double, but he missed the Cup final due to injuries.
In 2020–21, Sá was a league champion once more. However, his team was beaten to the Cup by PAOK.
Sá joined Wolverham Wanderers on a five-year contract, and was given the number 1 jersey, which had not been worn at the Molineux club since Carl Ikemememememe returned to the team after being injured due to his leukaemia diagnosis in 2018.
Sá made his Premier League debut on August 14, 2021, losing 1–0 to Leicester City. In September, he was a defender for Ral Jiménez, the first Wolves goalkeeper to do so in the Premier League since Wayne Hennessey in October 2009. Wolves' good all-round results, including his distribution and shot stopping, led to a run of three clean sheets, earning the club's Player of the Month award, with former Manchester United player Gary Neville praising Sá as the season's Player of the Month. Despite losing 1–0 to Manchester City on Monday, Sá earned numerous accolades for his efforts, including several pivotal saves, even though Wolves were limited to ten men just before halftime, with only failing to protect a penalty. Sá received both Wolves' Fans of the 2021–22 Season and the Players' Player of the 2021–22 Season awards on May 15th, 2022–22 Season.
Sá had been playing with a fractured wrist injury in his second match of the season on October 14th, 2022, the first penalty save in a Wolves shirt since joining the club. With ten minutes remaining, Brennan Johnson saved another penalty against Nottingham Forest the following day.
International career
At the 2013 FIFA U-20 World Cup, Sá represented Portugal. In an eventual round-of-16 loss, he attended all of the matches and minutes in Turkey.
Sá received his first call-up to the under-21 squad for a friendly game against Switzerland on August 6th. On the 14th of August, he appeared in the second half of the 5–2 victory. Following a goalless draw at the Eden Arena, Sá was first choice in the 2015 UEFA European Under-21 Championship, keeping clean sheets in all but one game except one.
Sá was recalled to the full team for the first time on May 25, 2017, after manager Fernando Santos named him in a provisional 24-man squad for the FIFA Confederations Cup this year. He was still uncapped, but he was part of the squad that defeated the 2019 UEFA Nations League Finals on home soil in June but did not make it to the tournament.
