Joao Carlos Teixeira Career

Club career

Teixeira joined Sporting CP from Braga in 2004 and progressed through the youth teams. He began training with the first team and was given the number 46 shirt for the 2011-2012 season. He made his first appearance for the senior team in December 2011, when he was a unused substitute for Europa League matches against FC Zürich and Lazio.

Teixeira joined Liverpool in a £830,000 contract during the January 2012 transfer window after being a youth player at Braga and Sporting CP. During the 2011–12 NextGen Series, he had impressed Liverpool Academy boss Frank McParland with his appearances in midfield for Sporting Lisbon against Liverpool. Due to a back injury, the move was almost impossible. Teixeira was described as "the new Deco" after joining Liverpool. Teixeira made 20 U21 Premier League appearances for Liverpool during the 2012–13 season, scoring two goals as Liverpool progressed to the competition's semi-finals, losing 3–0 to Manchester United.

Teixeira scored the equalizer in a 1–1 draw with Leicester City on September 2nd and then celebrated it with a 5–0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur on October 7th.

Teixeira, despite Bologna's ardent admiration, joined Brentford on September 10th, 2013 on a youth loan running until January 5th, 2014. In a 4–3 victory over Tranmere Rovers on September 14, he made his first professional appearance of his career, debuting as an added-time replacement for George Saville. On September 23, he made his second appearance as a replacement for Martin Fillo, who was playing 21 minutes in a 2–0 home loss to Leyton Orient. However, as Brentford fell further into League One, manager Uwe Rösler admitted that owing to the team's lack of form, he could no longer guarantee the game time for Teixeira. Since Teixeira had made only two league appearances, the loan was ended early by Liverpool on October 7th.

In a close 3–2 victory at Craven Cottage on Tuesday, Teixeira made his senior team debut against Raheem Sterling on February 12th. He was involved in the build-up play that resulted in Daniel Sturridge winning the penalty that lifted Liverpool the game. Following the success of manager Brendan Rodgers and captain Steven Gerrard's game, the young midfielder was lauded.

Teixeira signed Brighton & Hove Albion on a season-long loan contract, signed by former Liverpool defender Sami Hyypiä on August 15, 2014. In a 1–0 loss away to Birmingham City, Teixeira made his debut the day after joining, appearing as a 64th-minute replacement for Kazenga LuaLua.

He scored his first goal on his first full appearance for the club on August 19th, defeating Leeds United 2–0. He scored his second goal for the club just four days after it came from behind to beat Bolton Wanderers 2–1.

In a 3–2 home win over Ipswich Town on January 21, 2015, Teixeira scored twice in the first half. He scored two more goals for a 4–3 victory over Birmingham a month later. Teixeira sustained a broken leg during a goalless draw on April 14th. He was recalled by Liverpool after being ruled out for the remainder of the season. After finishing the season as Brighton's top scorer with 6 goals, he was named Young Player of the Year on April 20th. Teixeira was also named Younger of the Year by Liverpool on May 19th.

Teixeira made his first appearance for Liverpool against Bournemouth in the League Cup on October 28, 2015, and assisted Nathaniel Clyne in scoring his first goal of the game. Teixeira scored his first competitive goal for Liverpool in a FA Cup Third Round replay on January 20, 2016, beating Exeter City 3–0.

Following the expiration of his deal with Liverpool, Teixeira said on June 12th that he had agreed to join Porto. He was announced by Liverpool two days later, with the club owing £250,000 in compensation.

Teixeira was loaned back to his hometown Braga on August 31, 2017 for the season. In a UEFA Europa League 2–1 victory over Hoffenheim on September 14, he played 23 times, scoring once and equalizing, as well as an equalizer.

Teixeira joined Braga's local rivals Vitória S.C. on a three-year contract in a surprise move on July 26, 2018. He didn't score until 13 months later, when he scored in Europa League qualifiers over Jeunesse Esch and Ventspils; 2019-20 was his most prolific league season in his career, with eight goals.

Teixeira went back to France on a two-year contract with the possibility of a third at Feyenoord, the Dutch Ethiopian; no fee was disclosed. With Famalico, he returned to his country's top division after not scoring in 24 appearances, mainly as a replacement.

On June 27, 2022, Teixeira signed a two-year contract with Umm Salal in the Qatar Stars League.

International career

From U16 to U21, Teixeira represented Portugal at every age group. He was selected in the Under-17 squad for the 2010 UEFA European Championships under the supervision of his parents. In June 2013, he made his U21 debut in a friendly against Croatia, kicking the game and scoring in the 84th minute.
