Harry Maguire Career

Club career

Maguire was promoted to the first-team squad after being a half-time replacement and winning the man of the match award in a home match against Cardiff City in April 2011. He made four more appearances this season, but he did not help the team avoid being relegated to League One.

Maguire scored his first goal for the Blades in a 2–0 victory over Oldham Athletic on the first day of the 2011–12 League One season. Maguire was given an extended contract in October in order to keep Bramall Lane alive until 2015. He continued to play well as the Blades pressed for promotion from League One, and was rewarded at the end of the season when he was named both "Player of the Year" and "Young Player of the Year" by the club. Maguire was selected in the BBC's Match of the Year magazine for 2011-2012.

Maguire's good form continued in the fourth year as he started in a Football League Trophy tie against Notts County at Meadow Lane on October 17, 2012. Maguire had started his Blades career in a 0–0 draw with Leyton Orient at Bramall Lane in February 2013 at the age of 19 years old.

United had offered Maguire an enhanced deal in the wake of Hull City and Wolverhampton Wanderers' interest in signing Maguire, despite United's earlier denying a £1 million and a revised £1.5 million bid from Wolves.

Maguire signed a three-year deal with Hull City on July 29, 2014. He made his Tiger debut against Lokeren of Belgium on August 21 in the UEFA Europa League play-off round first leg, defeating him 1–0. He did not make his Premier League debut until December 20, when he was introduced to Curtis Davies for the final 13 minutes against Swansea City, who was the same score.

Maguire joined Wigan Athletic of the Championship on a one-month loan agreement on February 10, 2015 after making only six appearances in all competitions at Hull. He made his debut at Reading in a 1–0 victory. In a 3–1 victory over Blackpool over a 3–1 win on February 28, he scored a header from Jermaine Pennant's cross. Maguire's stay at the DW Stadium was extended until the end of the season after playing in as many games in his month-long loan as he had for Hull in the first half of the season.

Although Maguire was out on loan, Hull had been recalled to the Championship. With a 1–0 play-off final victory over Sheffield Wednesday at Wembley Stadium on May 28, they secured promotion back to Sheffield Wednesday, with him replacing goalscorer Mohamed Diamé in the final minute.

Maguire was transformed into a first-team regular by manager Mike Phelan in 2016-17. In a 2–1 EFL Cup victory over Bristol City on October 25, Maguire scored his first goal for the Hull. Maguire captained Hull in their league victory over Middlesbrough on April 5th, scoring his first Premier League goal in the 4-2 victory. Both the fans and the players selected him Hull's Player of the Year in a season that ended with relegation.

Maguire joined Leicester City in the Premier League on a five-year deal, potentially increasing to £17 million with add-ons. He made his Arsenal debut on August 11th and then scored his first goal for the Foxes on August 11th, beating Brighton & Hove Albion 2–0 at the King Power Stadium, beginning with a 4–3 loss. He was active in every minute of the 2017-18 season and was named player of the season and player of the season at the club's end of season awards.

Maguire's Leicester manager Claude Puel revealed on transfer deadline day of 9 August 2018 that Maguire would remain at the club despite rumors surrounding a move to Manchester United for a potential world-record fee for a defender.

Manchester United made a £70 million bid for Maguire in July 2019, a year after the club pulled out of a contract because the same fee was deemed too high. They made an amended bid, expected to be £80 million, which Leicester accepted on August 2nd. The fee outstrip the £75 million Liverpool paid for Virgil van Dijk in January 2018, making Maguire the world's most expensive defender. Maguire completed his transfer on August 5th with a six-year deal with the possibility of a further year. He made his United debut in their first match of the Premier League season, defeating Chelsea 4–0 on August 11 and winning the Man of the Match award.

Following Ashley Young's departure to Inter Milan, he was named as the new club captain by manager Ole Gunnar Solskjr on January 17th. He opened the FA Cup with a 6–0 win over Tranmere Rovers, scoring his first goal for United. In a 2–0 away victory, he scored his first Premier League goal for United against Chelsea on February 17th. United's FA Cup race resumed on June 27th, with a quarter-final tie against Norwich City that finished 2–1. Maguire's winning goal brought the game well into extra time. Maguire was instrumental in United's recent 2019-20 Premier League campaign, which culminated in them finishing in third position, their second-highest league finish since Sir Alex Ferguson's retirement. Maguire was in every minute of United's 38 game league career, becoming the first outfield player to do so for the club since 1995.

Maguire scored his first goal of the season on October 17, equalizing in the 23rd minute in a league match against Newcastle United that ended in a 4–1 away victory. Despite losing by 2–1 in the 64th minute against his old club Sheffield United, which ended a 13-match unbeaten run after the team lost to Arsenal on 1 November 20, 2021. Maguire joined other former and present United players in protesting the bullying after losing. In United's historic 9–0 home victory over Southampton on February 2nd, he played the full 90 minutes.

In a scoreless draw against Leeds United, he tied Gary Pallister's club record for playing the most number of league games without being recalled by playing the full 90 minutes for the 71st consecutive Premier League game. However, he couldn't beat the record in the 72nd minute of the forthcoming match against Aston Villa, thanks to an ankle injury. Maguire missed the 2021 UEFA Europa League Final against Villarreal due to injury, in which United lost on penalties after a 1–1 draw.

International career

Maguire qualified to play for England, Northern Ireland, and the Republic of Ireland by his grandparents. However, he was called up to the England national under-21 team for the first time in November 2012 for a friendly against Northern Ireland. Danny Wilson said, "He has a phenomenal maturity for his age," he takes everything in his stride, and nothing fazes him." Since he is such a level headed type, I don't expect this call-up to either. Maguire was on his England under-21 debut in the 60th minute, assisting Liverpool's Andre Wisdom in a 2–0 victory over Northern Ireland Under-21s at Bloomfield Road.

Maguire was named in England's squad for the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier matches against Malta and Slovakia on August 24, 2017. He made his debut when England beat Lithuania 1–0 away, which was the team's last match in their successful World Cup qualification campaign.

Maguire was chosen in the 2018 FIFA World Cup's 23-man team. In England's World Cup opener, Harry Kane was assisting Harry Kane's victor against Tunisia on June 18, 2018. England defeated the United Kingdom 2–1. In a 2–0 win over Sweden in the quarterfinals on July 7, Maguire scored his first England goal from Ashley Young's cross on 7th.

In the last fixture of the group stage, he played his first match against the Czech Republic in Euro 2020. He continued his play in the round of 16, when England defeated Germany 2–0, for which he was named Star of the Match. Maguire scored his second goal for England in a 4–0 victory over Ukraine in the quarter-finals on July 3, 2021. Maguire entered Denmark and Italy in the semi-finals and a final. After 120 minutes, England lost 1-1; in the resulting penalty shoot-out, Maguire scored England's second penalty. However, England will lose 3–2. Due to his participation in the tournament, he was given a spot in the UEFA Euro 2020 Team of the Tournament.

Maguire scored the first goal in a 10–0 victory over San Marino on the final day of 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifying, beating John Terry and Jack Charlton.

Man United need a summer shake-up to refresh a squad that is miles off competing for the top prizes with EIGHTEEN players - and under-fire Erik ten Hag - on the chopping block

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 22, 2024
Manchester United's penalty shootout FA Cup semi-final win over Coventry City brought more questions than answers - both in terms of Erik ten Hag and his players.  This has been a season riddled by mistakes on and off the pitch for United and with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his Ineos team now assuming control of football operations, a summer shake-up feels inevitable.  United are looking to raise £100million through player sales and for some shown the door that will mean accepting a sizeable loss on their initial transfer outlay. Mail Sport runs through Manchester United's squad to work out who stays and who goes.

Rio Ferdinand blasts Antony for taunting Coventry's players after Man United's dramatic FA Cup semi-final shootout win as he urges senior members of the squad to warn the winger 'that don't happen here'

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 22, 2024
United survived a major upset after holding their nerve to win on penalties, having surrendered a three-goal advantage during a staggering second-half capitulation. Goals from Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes put Erik ten Hag's side in complete control of the contest but they were left shellshocked after the Championship side fought back and scored three times in the space of 24 minutes. Coventry even looked to have reached the final when Victor Torp beat Andre Onana, only for his effort to be disallowed by the video assistant referee for offside. After riding out a nervy period of extra-time, United emerged victorious from the spot, with Rasmus Hojlund rifling the decisive penalty into the bottom corner. Antony was then spotted cupping his ears in the direction of Coventry's players.

Roy Keane brands fellow pundits Ian Wright and Karen Carney 'BABIES' for winding him up after Man United's collapse in FA Cup semi-final against Coventry

www.dailymail.co.uk, April 22, 2024
Roy Keane could not resist taking a dig at his fellow pundits after accusing them of cheering on Coventry during their remarkable comeback against Manchester United in Sunday's FA Cup semi-final. United appeared to be cruising to victory to set up a repeat of last year's final against Manchester City when they opened up a three-goal lead inside the opening hour thanks to strikes from Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes. But Coventry came roaring back by scoring three times in the final 20 minutes to force extra time, and they almost pulled off one of the biggest wins in their history when substitute Victor Torp netted in the final minute only for VAR to rule that there had been an offside in the build-up.
