Scum disbanded 1991, and Amon Amarth was born in 1992. Hegg replaced Mäkitalo on vocals, Anders Hansson replaced Meriläinen on rhythm guitar, and Ted Lundström replaced Tarvainen on bass, and Thor Arise's first demo was released in 1993. It was raw and uneven in terms of sound and execution, but the band piqued the interest of extreme metal enthusiasts with its own "infectious brand of epic-sounding brutality and unadorned conviction." The arrival of the Fimbul Winter was recorded in 1994; over 1,000 copies were distributed.

They signed with Pulverized Records in 1996, on which they released their first MCD, Sorrow Throughout the Nine Worlds, which sold 6,000 copies.

They then signed with Metal Blade Records, releasing the debut album Once Sent from the Golden Hall. It was described as "a thrilling fusion of buzzsaw riffs, melodic harmonies, and soul-crushing rhythms, which were punctuated by Hegg's callous black/death rage and accounts of Norse battles and treachery" that Amon Amarth's international recognition soared. The song that bore the company's namesake's name was the most memorable, with "the tumultuous sounds of battle, the screams of the dying, and a lot of sword-clashing to boot," according to AllMusic. Since then, they have appeared in more than 100 metal magazines, including multiple Canada and US tours, eight music videos, and an interview with a journalist.

Anders Hansson, guitarist Anders Hansson, left in June 1998 and was replaced by Johan Soderberg as the band was about to begin a tour with Deicide, Six Feet Under, and Brutal Truth.
