Anette Olzon Career

Career

Olzon appeared on Alyson Avenue, first as a studio musician, but later as their leading lady, replacing the male vocalist. The band received a lot of feedback for a 1999 demo, and Alyson Avenue was soon able to call several brands. Niclas Olsson, the band's main composer and keyboardist, assembled the band for a four-track demo, which culminated in a record deal with AOR Heaven.

Their debut album Presence of Mind was received with rave reviews in November 2000. In 2004, Omega's next album was released. Olzon left Alyson Avenue in 2006. Alyson Avenue's latest lead vocalist, Arabella Vitanc, was introduced in May 2009.

The band reunited in 2018 and performed at Melodicrockfest Scandinavia in Malmö in early June.

Olzon officially joined Nightwish as their new lead singer in early 2007, choosing from a pool of about 2,000 applicants, of which 10 made it to be in front of the band. The song on her demo tape was 2002's "Ever Dream." Tarja Turunen, the former actress who had been fired in an open letter in 2005, was fired in a public letter. Olzon's performance was one of the first she heard of, although she had been refused the opportunity before, as bandleader Tuomas Holopainen was concerned with the fact that she had a teenage son. However, Olzon was persistent, and she gave the band a live DVD of her performance with Alyson Avenue. She was then approached by Nightwish's boss Ewo Pohjola, who eventually led to her taking up the position in February 2007. Tuomas expressed doubt over her decision, saying, "we (the band) held a formal vote," but it was unanimous that she would be the one. It was a matter of heart. We felt she was correct." Until she was eventually announced as the new Nightwish singer on May 24, 2007, she was kept anonymous by several means, including pretending to be Ewo's "Swedish cousin" at a Tarot concert.

"Eva" the day after this announcement, 25 May 2007, was the first off the album to be released, but only as downloads. It was originally scheduled to be announced on May 30th, but this was postponed due to a leak on a British music download site. Olzon was the first known song to have him on record. Dark Passion Play and Artwork were added to the new album on Nightwish's official website on June 13th, as well as the name and cover of the second single (this time CD), "Amaranth." After less than two days in stores, "Amaranth" earned gold status in Finland.

Dark Passion Play was published in Europe in the last week of September 2007, in the United Kingdom and the United States, on October 1 and October 2nd. The two-day gold medalist in Finland was announced on the second day after its debut on the charts of Germany, Finland, Switzerland, Hungary, and Croatia, and the United States ranked it No. 1 in top 100 countries, including the United States. Dark Passion Play has sold 6 million copies worldwide (over 1.5 million).

The band held a private concert at Rock Café in Tallinn, Estonia, on September 22, 2007, establishing themselves as a Nightwish cover band "Nachtwasser." The new singer's first official concert was held in Tel Aviv, Israel, on October 6, 2007. Since touring the United States, Canada, a majority of Europe, Asia, and Australia, the Dark Passion Play tour began. The Dark Passion Play World Tour is Nightwish's longest tour to date, running from October 2007 to September 2009. The tour came to an end with a performance by Hartwall Arena, Helsinki, by the band Apocalyptica.

Nightwish began recording for the album Imagination in October 2010, with Olzon recording her vocals for the album in April 2011 at Finnvox Studios in Helsinki. The album was released on November 30, 2011 and was followed by the Imaginaerum World Tour, which began on January 21, 2012. Olzon, as well as the rest of Nightwish, appeared in the film Imagination, which featured a variety of the band's hits.

Nightwish and Olzon parted on October 1, 2012. On the 29th of September, Nightwish's last appearance at The Complex in Salt Lake City was her last appearance with the Nightwish. Despite Olzon's admission that she was pregnant when she told them she was not pregnant, Nightwish denied this and said they were all congratulating her, not because of pregnancy or sickness. "Our personality didn't match for this work environment and was even harmful to it," she said. Olzon admitted in a 2021 interview with Blabbermouth.net that she wanted the band's tour dates postponed due to her pregnancy, but Holopainen denied her request. She was also against the band's decision to call Floor Jansen as the substitute vocalist out of fear for her career.

Olzon began writing and recording material for a new solo album following her release from Nightwish. Olzon said in an interview with 'Dark Sirens' in October 2013, that her solo album would be released sometime in 2014.'

Olzon's debut solo album, Shine, was announced on November 28, 2013. Stefan rn and Johan Glössner produced the album, and Olzon and Johan Kronlund co-produced it. "The album's message is that life can be really dark and full of sadness, but you can still choose to see some light shining through to make you happier and full of life, making you SHINE no matter what." "A pop rock album perhaps, or should you say pop metal?" Olzon referred to the album's musical direction. Olzon revealed on January 27 that the release date for her album had been postponed a month, putting the new release date of March 28, 2014.

On December 17, 2013, Shine's first song, "Falling," was released for digital download, as well as a lyric video on YouTube. On February 7, 2014, Olzon's official Facebook page teaser for the album's first official single, "Lies," was revealed, followed by the single's eventual release on February 14th.

Olzon said she had hopes for a new album in June 2015, but that information is still being worked on by her new label.

Olzon's EP (instead of two songs), a Swedish song called "Vintersjäl"), and an English song called "Cold Outside" is only available on digital download.

Olzon's single "Parasite" from the album Strong on June 21, 2021, was later revealed on September 10th, 2021.

Olzon revealed on August 29 that she would collaborate with former Sonata Arctica guitarist Jani Liimatainen on a project dubbed The Dark Element. On November 10, 2017, the debut self-titled album was released. Songs the Night Sings was their second album, and it was released on October 8, 2019.

Olzon has appeared on stage and live, including Brother Firetribe on the album "Heart Full of Fire" from the same name in 2008, Pain on the song "Follow Me" from Cynic Paradise's "Feed Us" in 2005 and Black Mount Rise on the single "Apart & Astray" in 2015.

Olzon performed two Nightwish songs, "Kuolema Taitagijan" and "Meadows of Heaven," with the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra, on August 13 in Suomi Safari, Finland – the event was in honor of Sweden and Finland relations.

Olzon performed two songs from her own album at the opening gala of Helsingborg Arena on November 30, 2012.

In 2015, Anette Olzon appeared on the second season of the Finnish competition show Tähdet, Tähdet. Olzon performed their own covers of songs from various genres, with one artist being barred from the competition each week by televote. Olzon was the only foreign artist to be on the program, though she did one song partially in Finnish. On the fifth week of the show, she was eliminated.

Russell Allen, a Symphony X singer, collaborated with Olzon under the name Allen/Olzon in 2020. Worlds Apart, their debut album, was released on March 6, 2020.
