She was only paid 10 rupees for her role in the film, but the rushes of those three minutes of film were shown to the major figures of Telugu cinema. She was offered starring roles in quality films by major filmmakers, and she accepted them. She became a big star in 1976 with major hit films. director K. On the eve of the assembly elections, Jayaprada joined the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) in 1994 at the invitation of its founder N. T. Rama Rao, and the group quickly advanced through the ranks. At the time, there was rumors that she might run for office, but she did not intend to make her electoral debut, although Rao offered her a seat.

In 1994, she ran in several constituencies. When Rao became the Prime Minister in 1994, he appointed Nara Chandrababu Naidu, one of his sons-in-law, as the Revenue Minister. Chandrababu Naidu pleaded with the majority of the TDP MLAs to elect him as the Prime Minister shortly after the government was established. Since most of the legislators had opted out for his party, the Anti Defection Act did not apply, and the Telugu Desam Party badge passed on to the Chandrababu Naidu faction. Prada was also a member of the Chandrababu Naidu faction of the party during this period. In 1996, she was nominated for the Rajya Sabha, representing Andhra Pradesh. Telugu Mahila President Leila Mora served in this capacity.

She was given a warning by the Election Commission in 2009 for breaching the code of conduct by selling bindis to women in Rampur's Swar locality. Jayaprada alleged that senior Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan was secretly selling nude photographs of her on May 11, 2009. She was re-elected by a margin of over 30,000 votes.

Prada's former General Secretary of the Samajwadi Party, Amar Singh, was barred from the party for reportedly engaging in anti-party activities and damaging the party's secular reputation after she came out in open support for her party's secular leadership. In 2011, Amar Singh and Jayaprada formed Rashtriya Lok Manch, a national party, that was floated in 2011, and fielded candidates in 360 of the 4043 seats in Uttar Pradesh. However, his party did not win a single seat in the recent polls.
