He spent his childhood in Tonk and then in Jaipur. Irrfan was a natural performer at cricket and was selected to compete in the CK Nayudu Trophy for young players in the under-23 category, a tournament that has been regarded as a stepping stone to first-class cricket in India. However, he did not attend because he couldn't afford travel expenses.

He expressed an interest in acting under the influence of his maternal uncle, who himself was a theatre artist in Jodhpur. Khan was introduced to well-known theatre performers in Jaipur and appeared in numerous stage performances in the city. Khan earned his MA in Jaipur before joining the National School of Drama (NSD) in New Delhi in 1984 to study acting.

"The kind of craze witnessed by Rajesh Khanna hasn't been duplicated by anyone," Irfan said later in an interview. He was the most popular and authentic celebrity that Bollywood has ever produced. Stardom is the feeling of being possessed by your idol; you are so enthralled with euphoria that you lose touch with reality."
