Han Hyo-joo (born February 22, 1987) is a South Korean film and television actress.

She is best known for her appearances in television drama series Spring Waltz (2006); Brilliant Legacy (2009); Dong Yi (2010) and W (2016); and film Cold Eyes (2013), for which she received Best Actress at the 34th Blue Dragon Film Awards; and romance film The Beauty Inside (2015).

Early life

Han Hyo-joo was born in Cheongju, North Chungcheong Province. Her mother, an elementary school teacher, before becoming an inspector for public schools, and her father was an air force officer. She was an athletic child, especially track and field. Despite her strict and conservative father's objections, she moved to Seoul and Bulgok High School in her sophomore year of high school. She then transferred to Dongguk University, where she joined the theatre and film departments.

Career

Han was first discovered in a Binggrae-sponsored teenage beauty pageant in 2003. She began her acting career in Nonstop 5 and the gangster comedy film My Boss, My Teacher. Han later raised her profile by appearing in Spring Waltz, the fourth and final installment of TV director Yoon Seok-ho's "season drama" series.

Han in 2006 starring role in his low-budget independent film Ad-lib Night, which follows a young woman who rediscovers herself after an eerie overnight encounter with strangers. For her appearance at the Korean Association of Film Critics Awards and Singapore International Film Festival, she received the Best New Actress award and the Best New Actress prizes.

Han then appeared in two highly acclaimed television shows and rose to fame, including KBS' daily drama Heaven & Earth with Park Hae-jin in 2007, and SBS' masked adventure series Iljimae with Lee Joon-gi in 2008. During their run as high viewer numbers and launched Han into a household name, both dramas received solid viewership ratings throughout their respective seasons. She appeared in another indie film, Ride Away, which premiered at the 2008 Jeonju International Film Festival.

Han then shot the Korean-Japanese co-production Heaven's Postman, which also starred pop star Jaejoong from TVXQ (now JYJ). It was first introduced in theaters in late 2009 and then broadcast on television in 2010.

Han's breakthrough was in Brilliant Legacy costarring Lee Seung-gi, which became a huge success in 2009 and attained a record viewership rating of 47.1%. It boosted Han to fame, and after the drama's end, she saw a dramatic rise in endorsement deals and media demands for interviews, as well as an increased pan-Asian presence. Han wrapped up her appearance in the musical drama Soul Special, which aired on KBS Joy later this year.

In 2010, Han played the titular character in MBC's 49th anniversary project Dong Yi. During its run both locally and Asia, the series became a hit. Han received many acting awards for her role as Choi Suk-bin, including the Daesang (Grand Prize) award at MBC Drama Awards and the coveted Best Actress award at Baeksang Arts Awards.

In the melodrama film Always, Han played a blind telemarketer opposite So Ji-sub's ex-boxer. It premiered as the opening film of the 2011 Busan International Film Festival, directed by Song Il-gon. Han later provided narration for the "barrier-free" version of the Japanese film My Back Page, which includes descriptive audio and subtitles for people with hearing or visual impairments.

In the 2012 blockbuster period film Masquerade, which became one of the highest-grossing Korean films of all time, Han then played the queen to Lee Byung-hun's Gwanghae. Love 911, an unexpected romance between a doctor and a firefighter, was the next step. (Go Soo)

Han starred in The Battle in the Sky, a direct sequel to the 2007 Hong Kong film Eye in the Sky. Since its debut, the film dominated the box office and became one of the biggest domestic hits of 2013. Han received an acting award for her role as the Best Actress from the Blue Dragon Film Awards and Buil Film Awards.

Han and Love 911 costar Go Soo reunited in Myohyangwan ("View of Mount Myohyang"), which depicts the rendezvous of a South Korean painter and a North Korean waitress in a North Korean restaurant. Moon Kyung-won and Jeon Joon-ho's collaboration culminated in a dramatic storyline, experimental photography, dance, and performance art.

"Miracle Devil Claus' Love and Magic" was her first Japanese film, Isshin Inudo's Miracle: Debikuro-Kun no Maho, she then stepped into the overseas market, starring in her first Japanese film, "Miracle Devil Clause Love and Magic." The film, shot during the Christmas season, follows a kind bookstore employee (played by Masaki Aiba of J-pop boyband Arashi) who meets three people.

Han appeared in the musical biopic C'est Si Bon, which portrayed the rises and downs of the folk music group Twin Folio, which was active from the 1960s to 1980s. C'est Si Bon was the name of a famous music lounge in Mugyo-dong in the 1970s, where Twin Folio got off; Han played the group's muse. This was followed by the romantic comedy film The Beauty Inside, in which Han's character falls in love with a man who shifts to different people every day.

Han worked together with Yoo Yeon-seok and Chun Woo-hee in The Beauty Inside, a film that based the last story of gisaeng during the Japanese occupation in the 1940s and 1950s, later this year.

Han, along with MBC's fantasy suspense series W, a small screen thriller starring Lee Jong-suk, returned to the small screen in 2016. As this was Han's return to the small screen after 6 years, he was helmed by director Jung Dae-yoon, whose previous films included Nine: Nine Time Travels and Prince In-Hyun's Man. For her appearance in Washington, she received the Top Excellence award at the 5th APAN Star Awards and MBC Drama Awards.

Han starred in the thriller Golden Slumber alongside Kang Dong-won in 2018. She reunited with Kang as the female protagonist in Illang: The Wolf Brigade, based on the Japanese animated film of the same name.

Han was announced as part of the main cast of American television series Treadstone, an offshoot of Universal's Bourne franchise.

Han was cast in a Japanese action film Taiyu wa Ugokanai ("The Sun Stands Still"), directed by Eiichiro Hasumi in 2020. Han is a fabled and enigmatic spy who travels around the world on adventures while still avoiding her true motives.

Han starred opposite Park Hyung-sik in 2021 as a member of a counter-terrorism squad in the apocalyptic thriller drama Happiness. The drama, directed by Ahn Gil-Ho, depicted class discrimination, conflicting human desires, and the fight for survival in an apartment in Seoul due to a mysterious virus epidemic that threatens the lives of the inhabitants of a large city.

In 2022, Han Han appears in The Pirates: The Last Royal Treasure, the sequel to the 2014 blockbuster The Pirates, alongside Kang Ha-neul and Lee Kwang-soo. Hae-rang, the pirate ship's captain, appears in this film. Illang: The Wolf Brigade, the film, marks her return to Korean cinema after four years. Han will make a special appearance in the film 20th Century Girl in October, playing the adult version of Kim Yoo-jung's character.
