Jang Na-ra (Korean) is a South Korean singer, record designer, and actress who has worked in both the South Korean and Chinese entertainment industries since 2001.

She rose to fame with her hit studio album Sweet Dream in 2002, My Bratty Princess (2005), Confession Couple (2017), and The Last Empress (2018-2019).

Early life and education

Jang spent the majority of her childhood in Seoul, South Korea's Yeokchon-dong, Eunpyeong District. She appeared with her father, Ju Ho-seong, who is also an actor, in the Les Misérables play, sparking her desire to be an actress. Jang studied television ads in her early school days before moving to Chung-Ang University's Department of Theatre, Faculty of Fine Arts, where she majored in Theater and Film in March 2000. She graduated ten years later on February 19, 2010. The delay was due to her continued work since her inception into the university. In addition, she was given an alumni association award for her services to the university during the graduation ceremony.

Personal life

Jang was a great year for her year, with best-selling albums, multiple awards, and several highly rated television shows under her belt. In May 2001, Jang made her debut as an actress in the entertainment industry as a performer. She began her singing career by becoming a student and signing a deal with SM Entertainment.

Burying My Face In Tears is Jang's debut album First Story. It was not well received early on and only ranked 12 in Korean music charts, and it was not well known. She became more popular and released the other songs in the album, including her pop ballad style song Confession and the April Story, which appeared on various music charts, after appearing in the popular sitcom New Nonstop. The album has sold 300,000 copies. Jang was then a host for MBC's music show, Music Camp, and KBS' talk show Love Story. She received several New Female Artist awards from year-end Music Awards ceremonies and New MC awards from Entertainment Awards ceremonies by the end of 2001.

Jang's second album Jjang Nara Vol.2 Sweet Dream was released in October 2002. The song Sweet Dream became extremely popular and hit number one in Korean music charts, naming Jang as the first household name in the industry. The album has also become one of South Korea's top-selling albums of the year. Due to Sweet Dream's success, Jang has received many accolades, including two Daesang awards or the Grand Prize (equivalent to Korean Top Artist of the Year) from MBC Music Festival and KBS Music Awards, among other categories. In 2003, she was named as the Year's Best Singer of the Year by China's CCTV-MTV Awards.

Jang's third album, titled 3rd Story, featured top songs including "I am a Woman Too" and "Is That True?"

In 2004, Jang launched a Best Hits album based on songs from her three previous albums. She followed it up with her fourth album, My Story, which featured hits such as I Love School and Winter Diary.

In China, she continued to work in music by releasing Chinese-language albums. Her first Chinese album was a huge success, making her China's first foreign artist with over 1 million copies sold. Two more Chinese albums, Kungfu (2005) and Flying High (2006), were followed by the launch of two more Chinese albums, Kungfu (2005) and Flying High (2006).

She returned to the Korean music scene in 2007 with her fifth Korean album titled She, which features medium tempo Masquerade and the dance piece You & I. She performed a duet with Jimmy Lin in 2009 for the soundtrack of their film Flying With You. JJ Lin, a well-known Singaporean musician, produced the album. Jang returned to Korea in 2012, four years after launching Dream of Asia with the digital single I Only Think of You. She released her fourth Chinese album Love Journey in the same year.

Jang Na-Ra performed Sweet Dreams, I Am a Woman Too, April Story on Sugar Man season 2, which had the highest audience rating among all terrestrial and non-terrestrial programs broadcast at the same time, on May 20, 2018. Jang Nara's Sweet Dream became the most watched performing video among all Sugar Man singers.
