Career
McCain graduated from Christ Church Episcopal School in Greenville, South Carolina, and he briefly attended both the College of Charleston and Coastal Carolina University. The Edwin McCain band bonded with Atlantic Records, long-time touring companions with Hootie and the Blowfish. He released Honor Among Thieves, his first major-label album on the Lava Records imprint in 1994 (Matchbox Twenty, Kid Rock and Jewel). The record was first released in 1995. Misguided Roses, his second album, spawned "I'll Be" a major hit single in 1998. This song, as well as a live version of "Solitude," are included on the charity album "Live in the X Lounge." It was also included in the 2000 drama television show Higher Ground, as well as the 2004 teen film A Cinderella Story.
The 1999 summer was the debut of McCain's third album, Messenger, which also featured a second Top 40 hit, the Diane Warren-penned "I Could Not Ask For More." Message from Matt Serletic (Matchbox Twenty, Collective Soul), and Noel Golden, a new version of Messenger), was recorded at Tree Sound Studios and Southern Tracks in Atlanta, as well as Record Plant Studios in Los Angeles. On the soundtrack to the 1999 film Message in a Bottle, "I Could Not Ask For More."
McCain divorced from Lava/Atlantic at the end of 2001 after completing his four-album deal. In early 2003, he released The Austin Sessions, a Nashville-based independent record label (at which McCain was the first artist signed after its inception in 2001). McCain's big-label departure with a deliberately stripped-down sound punctuated his departure from touring, including Dire Straits' "Romeo and Juliet" in roughly 20 days. The album, as well as McCain's debut DVD, Mile Marker: Songs and Stories from the Acoustic Highway (2002), contained of interviews, live performances, and other material, served as a thank-you to longtime followers. "The whole thing is kind of saying, 'I'm back to doing what I started doing," McCain said in a Billboard interview in May 2003. Around the same time, Edwin McCain hosted "Inside Music With Edwin McCain," a syndicated program on the Sirius radio network.
Scream & Whisper, his first studio album in three years, was released on another indie label, DRT Entertainment, in mid-2004. McCain took time off his tour to run the 35th annual New York City Marathon later this year. In an interview with Runner's World in August 2004, McCain talked about traveling: "You just pick your spots." Depends on how far the hotel is from the venue, one of the things that comes in handy. For example, the other day, the hotel was five miles away from the club where I was playing, so we threw on my running gear and then walked back to the hotel. "Putty things like that help." In late 2004, McCain unveiled Tinsel and Tap Shoes, his second DVD. It was his first live concert DVD recorded at The House of Blues in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
McCain wrote and performed with singer/songwriter Maia Sharp in 2005. This song, which is free on iTunes, will help the victims of the hurricane victims this year. Lost in America, McCain's next album, was released on Vanguard Records on April 11, 2006. Three singles were missing in America: "We Believe," "The Kiss," and "Grace Park Hotel," which pays tribute to the New York City landmark and its colorful patrons (including baseball legend Babe Ruth). Tor Hyams' "Nobody's Fault But Mine" (a collection of R&B cover songs) was released by Sahro Road Records on June 24, 2008, and it featured a version of Soul Brothers Six's "Some Kind of Wonderful" as a result.
McCain was on board the USS John C. Stennis on May 17, 2009, while the airline was on a Western Pacific deployment near Guam. The Best of Edwin McCain, a 20-year career retrospective that included a cross-section of work as well as a new single, "Walk With You," was released next year. (Don Was). Mercy Bound, McCain's tenth album, was released on 429 Records on August 30, 2011. Mercy Bound, together with collaborator Maia Sharp, who also had production credits, provides more artistic contributions from Angie Aparo, Mark Addison, and Anders Osborne, as well as Warren Haynes' guitar work.
McCain is also a ship restorer, as seen on the old Animal Planet television show Flipping Ships.
McCain performed the American National Anthem at Gillette Stadium on January 22, 2017 during the AFC Championship Game between the New England Patriots and the Pittsburgh Steelers. Merry Christmas, Baby, McCain's first Christmas album, was released on November 29, 2019.
