Mariah Carey Career

Career

Carey went to a CBS record executives' gala in December 1988, where she handed over her demo tape to Columbia Records' CEO Tommy Mottola. He pleaded with the driver to turn around after listening to the tape during the ride home. Carey had already attended the festival, and he'd spent two weeks looking for her in what has been described as a modern-day Cinderella tale. A bidding war erupted, prompting another record label's excitement. Mottola signed Carey to Columbia and enlisted the services of top producers Ric Wake, Narada Michael Walden, and Rhett Lawrence. Carey was marketed by Columbia as the top female artist on their roster, along with Whitney Houston and Madonna of Sire Records, who were battling with Arista's Whitney Houston and Madonna of Sire Records. Carey made her first public appearance at the 1990 NBA Finals on June 5, 1990, singing "America the Beautiful." "The palace now has a queen," CBS Sports anchor Pat O'Brien announced.

Mariah Carey, Columbia's debut studio album, was promoted by the department for up to $1 million. The album recovered from a slow start to its 11 weeks as a result of Carey's appearance at the 33rd Annual Grammy Awards, where she received the award for Best New Artist and Best Female Vocal Performance for her single "Vision of Love." The album's singles "Vision of Love," "Love Takes Time," "Someday," and "I Don't Wanna Cry" were among the top hits on the US Billboard Hot 100. Mariah Carey was the best-selling album in the United States in 1991, and the company's worldwide sales of 15 million copies exceeded her expectations.

Carey co-wrote, co-produced, and recorded her second studio effort, Emotions, in the ensuing year. Carey's tribute to Motown soul music, Walter Afanasieff, who appeared on her debut but not in any capacity, as well as Robert Clivillés and David Cole of the dance company C+C Music Factory, was employed by Carey. Carey's relationship with Margulies deteriorated as a result of a royalties conflict that was not resolved. The songwriting pair parted ways after filing a lawsuit against Columbia's parent company, Sony. On September 17, 1991, Emotions were first published. Carey's fifth chart hit the top of the Billboard Hot 100, with the album's lead single triggering the chart's top. Though critics applauded the album's content and referred to it as a more mature attempt, critics also sluggish, lacking originality. Though Emotions' revenues in the region grew to eight million copies, the album's predecessor, Emotions, did not reach the same commercial and critical heights.

Carey did not embark on a world tour to market the album. Although she attributed this to stage fear and the vocally demanding nature of her work, rumors grew that Carey was a "studio worm" and that she was unaware of obtaining the right pitch and 5-octave vocal range for which she was not identified. Carey made a live appearance on MTV Unplugged in the hopes of putting an end to any rumors of her being a manufactured artist. Artists were "unplugged" or in a stripped space and devoid of studio equipment, according to the show. Carey and Afanasieff decided to include a cover of the Jackson 5's 1970 hit "I'll Be There" on the set-list days before the show's taping. Carey appeared and recorded an intimate seven-song performance at Kaufman Astoria Studios in Queens, New York, on March 16, 1992. More than three times per episode than the average episode, the acclaimed revue was broadcast more often than ever. Carey was established as a live act, with commentators describing it as a "vocal Tour de force." On the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Carey's live version of "I'll Be There" reached her sixth number one single. Sony capitalized on its success and announced it as an EP. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA), a three-Platinum award-winning company, has received Gold and Platinum awards in several European markets.

Carey's upcoming debut album, when Emotions struggled to reach her first album's commercial heights, would be promoted as adult contemporary and pop-friendly. Carey and Afanasieff founded Music Box, which began a songwriting relationship that would continue until Butterfly, 1997. The album received mixed reviews from music critics on August 31, 1993. Carey's songwriting was mocked, and her vocal performances were described as less emotional and lazier in their delivery. "Often excessive enthusiasm is preferable to an absence of passion," Ron Wynn said in his review of the album. Carey started on her debut tour, the Music Box Tour, a six-date concert series on sale of the album. "Hero," Carey's eighth chart-topper in the United States, and it has been named as her signature song. Badfinger's "Without You" was a commercial breakthrough in Europe, becoming her first top-one single in Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. With worldwide sales of over 28 million copies, Music Box is Carey's best-seller and one of the best-selling albums of all time.

Carey also appeared and performed a duet with Luther Vandross in mid-1994; a front of Lionel Richie and Diana Ross' "Endless Love". Merry Christmas, which was released on November 1, 1994, became the best-selling Christmas album of all time, with worldwide orders exceeding 15 million copies. "All I Want for Christmas Is You," the lead single, became a holiday staple and is expected to increase in popularity each holiday season. It had been the 11th-best-selling single in modern music by October 2017. It reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for the first time in 2019, becoming the first song to do so in more than two years, as well as the longest-running holiday number one (eight weeks). In addition,, it is the longest running number one song on the Billboard Holiday 100, spanning 44 weeks out of the chart's 49 weeks since the list began in 2011.

Carey's fifth studio album, Daydream, found her retaining creative control over her work, which culminated in conflicts with Columbia. The album featured a transition from her allegiance to pop and a strong emphasis on R&B and hip hop. Carey's best to date, according to a reviewer, the album was dubbed Carey's best to date. "The album" brings R&B candy-making to a new degree of textural refinement, according to the New York Times; Carey's songwriting has taken a leap forward and become more accessible, sexier, and less reliant on thudding clichés. "Fantasy," the album's lead single and the first female artist to debut on the Billboard Hot 100, and "One Sweet Day," a R&B/Mexico partnership, remained the longest-running number one song in the charts for a week.

After Music Box, Daydream became Carey's highest-selling album in the United States and her second album to be named Diamond by the RIAA. Carey's reign in Asian music markets was continued, with sales in excess of 2.2 million copies in Japan alone and over 20 million copies worldwide. At the 38th Grammy Awards, daydream and its singles were nominated in six categories. Carey was turned down as a favorite to win the top awards of the evening, prompting her to ask, "What can you do?" I will never be dissatisfied with another person." She began the Daydream World Tour in early 1996, marking her first international tour. Its seven dates in Japan and four around Europe. Carey was named as the top-earning female artist of 1996 by Forbes, earning an estimated $32 million.

Carey appeared on Daydream's Ugly Daughter by the band Chick, contributing to writing, production, singing, and art direction. Carey's sister Clarissa Dane was brought in to become Chick's face, masking her voice as Columbia Records refused to publish her album with her lead vocals, and her vocals were layered on top of Carey's. Carey also supervised the music video for the Chick song "Malibu." "I was playing with the style of the breezy-grunge, punk-light white female singers who were incredibly popular at the time," Carey said. "I was really looking forward to doing my alter-ego band sessions after Daydream each night." Her contributions were not revealed until the unveiling of her 2020 book The Meaning of Mariah Carey.

Carey's subsequent musical debuts followed the Daydream trend. Her music began relying less on pop and adult contemporary-tinged balladry and instead incorporating key elements of hip-hop and R&B. Carey collaborated on Butterfly with a bewildering number of suppliers other than Afanasief, including Sean Combs, Q-Tip, Missy Elliott, and Trackmasters' Samuel Barnes. Carey and Mottola separated in mid-1997, after four years of marriage. Carey referred to Mottola as more and more influential, and she viewed her newfound independence as a new lease on life. Carey's book Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (2009), a collection of her twelfth studio album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel (2009), she wrote that Butterfly is her magnum opus and a turning point in both her life and work. Butterfly introduced a more natural style of singing, with critics chastising Carey's use of breathy vocals. Some viewed her propensity to use her upper range as a sign of maturity, while others doubted whether it spelled waning vocal prowess. "Honey," the album's lead single since separating from Mottola, featured a more overtly sexual image. Butterfly became Carey's most coveted album, with emphasis placed on the album's search for more mature lyrical topics. Rolling Stone wrote "It's] not as if Carey has completely dissatisfied with her old saccharine, Houston-style balladry," on the album, but "Butterfly" has the predominant tone, according to the singers. Carey's vocals were described as "sultrier and more precise than ever" on the album, which makes her a unique among her '90s peers, according to AllMusic editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine. Despite its commercial success, the album has struggled to hit the commercial heights of her previous albums, Music Box, and Daydream.

Carey performed at the VH1 Divas charity concert on April 14, 1998, where she appeared with Aretha Franklin, Celine Dion, Shania Twain, Gloria Estefan, and Carole King after concluding her Butterfly World Tour. Carey began imagining a film project All That Glitters, later renamed to simply Glitter (2001), and wrote songs for other projects, such as Men in Black (1997) and How the Grinch Stole Christmas (2001). Carey postponed the project and began writing content for a new album after Glitter fell into developmental hell. Sony Music executives insisted that she produce a best hits collection in time for the holiday season. The collection, titled #1's (1998)), featured a cover of Brenda K. Starr's "I Still Believe" and a duet with Whitney Houston, "When You Believe," which was included on the soundtrack for The Prince of Egypt (1998). In Japan's first week, #1 became a hit, with over one million copies being sold, making Carey the only international artist to do so. In its first three months on sale in Japan, it sold over 3.25 million copies and holds the record as the nation's most popular album by a non-Asian artist.

Carey completed the album in three months in mid-1999, with only one album remaining to fulfill her Sony contract and with a burning desire to distinguish herself professionally from the record label her ex-husband still holds. Carey was discovered on the album with producers she hadn't worked with before. Rainbow was Carey's first album to not include her longtime writing partner Walter Afanasieff; rather, she chose David Foster and Diane Warren to work with her. "Heartbreaker," the album's lead single, featured guest vocals from rapper Jay-Z and a remix produced by DJ Clue? Rainbow was released on November 2, 1999, a week after her first week sales soared, but the Billboard 200's debuts her at number two. Carey's tense affiliation with Columbia escalated; she began posting messages on her website, revealing inside scoops with supporters, as well as instructing them to request "Can't Take That Away" on radio stations. The song was only available and low-promotion version in the end. The general reaction of Rainbow was generally optimistic, with the finding that "what began on Butterfly as a departure ends up on a rainbow" as a progress, perhaps the first clear indication of Carey's true colors as an artist." Rainbow, despite being a commercial success, became Carey's lowest-selling album at that time in her career.

Carey was named both the Best-Selling Pop Female Artist of the Millennium by Billboard and the World Music Award for Best-Selling Pop Female Artist of the Millennium, as well as a part of Columbia Records. In April 2001, she signed an unprecedented $100 million five-album recording deal with Virgin Records (EMI Records). Glitter was a musical departure, recapturing a 1980s post-disco period to accompany the film, which was set in 1983. Carey was given full conceptual and creative control of the initiative. Columbia had regarded her as a commodity, according to her, with her departure from Mottola exacerbating her trade with label executives. Carey's three-year relationship with Latin singer Luis Miguel came to an end.

Carey suffered a physical and emotional breakdown in July 2001. She began posting troubling messages on her website and then behaving erratically in live promotional outings. She made a surprise appearance on MTV's program Total Request Live on July 19, MTV's version of Total Request Live (TRL). Carey came out clutching an ice cream cart when wearing a large men's shirt, triggering a striptease in which she introduced a tight outfit as the show's host Carson Daly started taping, following a commercial break. "I'm trying to figure out what's going to be doing right now, and so I don't think I should be doing it right now." What I want to do is take a little break or at least get one night of sleep without someone claming about a movie. All I really want is [to] be me, and that's what I should have done in the first place. I can't say much, but guess what, I don't take care of myself." Carey had been "obviously worn and not thinking clearly" when she first received the letters, according to Berger.

Carey was hospitalized on July 26 due to exhaustion and a "physical and emotional breakdown." She was admitted to a hospital in Connecticut and stayed under the doctors' care for two weeks, followed by a long absence from the public. The debut of Glitter and its soundtrack was postponed by Virgin Records and 20th Century Fox. Critics blasted Glitter and its soundtrack; both were unsuccessful commercially. Carey's lowest-selling album to that point. "It'll go down as an annoying blemish on [her] track record," the St. Louis Post-Dispatch described it as "an absolute mess" that would go down as "an annoying blemish on [her] work." She attributed her poor showing to her state of mind, its postponement, and the soundtrack, which was announced on September 11.

Carey's $80 million contract with Virgin Records was sold out for $28 million. She travelled to Capri, Italy, for five months, where she created content for a new album. Her time at Virgin was "a complete and complete stress-fest," she said. I made a completely snap decision based on money, but I never make decisions based on money. "I learned a lot from it." She signed a record label MonarC as a result of her long-term commitment to Island Records, which is worth more than $24 million. Alfred Roy, Carey's father, with whom she had no contact since childhood, died of cancer this year. Carey appeared in the independent film WiseGirls in 2002, alongside Mira Sorvino and Melora Walters, who co-starred as waitresses at a mobster-operated restaurant. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival and received critical feedback, but Carey's work was lauded; "Her line delivery is crisp and she gets the right laughs," Fox News' Roger Friedman described her as "a Thelma Ritter for the new millennium." At the Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, Carey performed the American national anthem.

Carey's ninth studio album, Charmbracelet, was released in December 2002, marking "a new lease on life" for her. Charmbracelet's sales were moderate, and Carey's vocal quality was criticized. Joan Anderson of The Boston Globe called the album "the worst of her career" and "it revealed a voice [that is] no longer capable of defying gymnastics or soft coos," although AllMusic editor Stephen Thomas Erlewine wrote, "Mariah's voice is shot," the Boston Globe said. She can no longer coo or softly croon, nor can she do her signature gravity-defying vocal runs." Carey embarked on the Charmbracelet World Tour, spanning North America and East Asia for three months. The performances in theaters in the United States were highly coveted. "Much more personal," she said, so you'll feel like you had an experience. "You will spend the night with me." Carey performed in stadiums throughout Asia and Europe, attracting a crowd of over 35,000 in Manila, 50,000 in Malaysia, and over 70,000 in China, although smaller venues were sold out throughout the tour's stateside leg. It was her first tour to see shows outside London, with arena stops in Glasgow, Birmingham, and Manchester. The tour received mostly favorable feedback, with many praising the execution and Carey's vocals.

The Emancipation of Mimi, Carey's tenth studio album, was produced by Neptunes, Kanye West, and Carey's longtime collaborator, Jermaine Dupri. The album was described as "very much like a party record," she said. "I wanted to make a record that was representative of that." Mimi's Emancipation debuted in the United States, becoming Carey's fifth top-one album and first since Butterfly (1997), and critics applauded it. "The music [... some of] the first Mariah Carey tunes in years that I would not have to pay to hear again," Caroline Sullivan of The Guardian described it as "cool, focused, and urban [[] some of] the first Mariah Carey tunes in years, which I would not have to pay to hear again," although USA Today's Elysa Gardner said, "the [songs] have been true to the reassurance of a songbird who has taken her to performer After a brief period and a time when many reviewers had doubted her career over, the album's second single, "We Belong Together," became a "career re-defining" song for Carey. Music critics praised the album as her "return to form," as well as the "return of The Voice," though some believed it would "reestablish "faith" in Carey's potential as a balladeer. "We Belong Together" broke several charts in the United States and became Carey's sixteenth chart topper on the Billboard Hot 100, making him Carey's sixteenth chart topper. The album became the second longest running number one song in US chart history after remaining at No. 1 for fourteen weeks, behind Carey's 1996 friendship with Boyz II Men, "One Sweet Day." It was billed as the "song of the decade" and the ninth most popular song of all time by Billboard. According to Nielsen BDS, the song set new airplay records, and one-week audiences in history, with both the largest one-day and one-week audiences in history.

Carey's debut on the first two charts in 2005, becoming the first female to occupy the first two positions on the Hot 100, while "We Belong Together" remained at number one, and her next album, "Shatter It Up," debuted at number one (Ashanti had been on the top of the charts in 2002). The song was named as the number one song on the Billboard Hot 100 Year-end Chart of 2005, marking a career first for Carey. According to Billboard, "We Belong Together" came in ninth on The Billboard Top Songs of the 2000s. The Ultra Platinum Edition of the album was re-released.

Mimi's Emancipation received ten Grammy Award nominations in 2006 (the most received by Carey in a single year) and two in 2007 for the Ultra Platinum Edition (from which "Don't Forget About Us" became her seventeenth number one hit): "We Belong Together" was the Best Contemporary R&B Album and Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B R&B Song on record, as well as Best R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B Song. In 2005, Mimi's Emancipation was the best-selling album in the United States, with nearly five million units sold. It was the first album by a solo female artist after Alanis Morissette's Jagged Little Pill in 1996. The IFPI announced that The Emancipation of Mimi had sold more than 7.7 million copies worldwide, and that it was the second-best-selling album of the year after Coldplay's X&Y. Mimi's The Emancipation of Mimi has sold over 12 million copies worldwide. Carey embarked on her first headlining tour in three years, The Adventures of Mimi, inspired by a "Carey-centric fan's" music diary. With 32 in the United States and Canada, two in Africa, and six in Japan, the tour spanned 40 dates, with 32 in the United States and Canada, two in Africa, and six in Japan. It received a warm reception from music critics and concertgoers, many of which praised Carey's vocals' quality.

Carey began working on her eleventh studio album, E=MC2, in an intimate villa in Anguilla in early 2007. Although most observers praised E=MC2 for being closely related to Mimi's formula, some of them chastised it for being very similar to the formula used on The Emancipation of Mimi. According to the magazine's updated methodology, "Touch My Body," the record's lead single, climbed to the top of the Billboard Hot 100 for the eighth week in a row, bringing Carey's eighth top-one singles to the United States history, pushing her past Elvis Presley to second place. Carey is second only to The Beatles, who have twenty-one singles. In addition, it placed Carey's 79th week on the Hot 100, tying her with Presley as the artist with the most weeks at number one in Billboard history."

With 463,000 copies sold, E=MC2 debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, the highest opening week sales of her career. Carey appeared in Krystal, Tennessee, as an aspiring singer, and appeared in Adam Sandler's film You Don't Mess with the Zohan, playing herself. Carey had planned to embark on a lengthy tour in support of E=MC2. The tour was then cancelled in early December 2008. Carey later admitted she was pregnant during the time period and had a miscarriage, resulting in a cancellation of the tour. After Barack Obama was sworn as the first African-American president of the United States on January 20, 2009, Carey performed "Hero" at the Neighborhood Inaugural Ball on January 20, 2009. Carey and Trey Lorenz performed her interpretation of The Jackson 5 song "I'll Be There" at Michael Jackson's memorial service on July 7, 2009.

In 2009, she appeared in Precious, the film version of the 1996 novel Push by Sapphire. Critics generally liked the film's performance, as well as Carey's. Variety characterized her appearance as "pitch-perfect." Carey received the Breakthrough Actress Achievement Award at the Palm Springs International Film Festival in January 2010 for her role in Precious. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, Carey's twelfth studio album, was released on September 25, 2009. The album's reception was mostly mixed; Stephen Thomas Erlewine of AllMusic called it "her most interesting album in a decade," while Jon Caramanica of The New York Times slammed Carey's vocal performances, accusing her overuse of her softer vocal registers at the expense of her more expressive lower and upper registers. The album debuted at number three on the Billboard 200 and became the lowest-selling studio album of her career. "Obsessed," the album's lead single, debuted at number eleven and peaked at number seven on the charts, and Carey's 27th top-ten hit, tying her with Elton John and Janet Jackson for the fifth most top-ten hits. The album's follow-up single, a recreation of Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is," has managed to smash airplay records in Brazil. The song debuted at number 27 weeks on the Brasil Hot 100 Airplay chart, making it the longest running song in the chart's history.

Carey began on December 31, 2009, embarking on her seventh concert tour, Angels Advocate Tour, which toured the United States and Canada and ended on September 26, 2010. Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, named Angels Advocate, was supposed to be released on March 30, 2010, but it was eventually cancelled.

Carey will return to the studio to begin recording her 13th studio album following Angels Advocate's demise. It was later revealed that it would be her second Christmas album and a sequel to Merry Christmas. Jermaine Dupri, Johntá Austin, Bryan-Michael Cox, and Randy Jackson, as well as new collaborators such as Marc Shaiman, were longtime collaborators on the project. The album's release date for the album, titled Merry Christmas II You, was November 2, 2010; it contained six new songs as well as a remix of "All I Want for Christmas Is You." Merry Christmas II. With 56,000 copies, you reached number four on the Billboard 200, marking Carey's 16th top ten albums in the United States.
