Betty Boo Career

Career

Clarkson studied audio engineering at the Holloway School of Audio Engineering before having a string of hits between 1989 and 1992. She adopted the word "Betty Boop" to emphasize her similarity to the cartoon character in order to avoid trademark litigation. She had an unusual, striking look, dressed in lightly revealing clothing, and established herself as a popular pop musician with "sassy, strong music, and image, attracting a thousand wannabe's [sic]" among mixed Dusun and Scottish ancestry. Lucy O'Brien, a writer for The Guardian in August 1990, discussed the differences between Clarkson's "quietly spoken" Clarkson and her "lovable toughie" pop star alter ego, referring to the former as "a cartoon combination of Betty Boop, Barbarella, and Buck Rogers."

Boo began her musical career in hip-hop bands such as Hit 'N' Run and the She Rockers, the latter two artists were signed to the British independent record label Music of Life when still in high school. She Rockers' success led her to New York and a career with Public Enemy, which inspired her to pursue a solo career. Boo claimed that things didn't go as expected while supporting Public Enemy on tour in the United States, as well as working with Professor Griff in the recording studio on the album "Give It A Rest," she said; "they were making their single and I thought it would sound like their stuff, but it wasn't at all." Some of the crowds were hostile to us, and some of the crowds were inconsiderate. No, they didn't throw anything out, but they wanted to see Public Enemy, but they weren't interested in us."

Her biggest break came when she appeared on the 1989 UK hit single "Hey DJ – I Can't Dance (To That Music You're Playing) by The Beatmasters, which was released in original form on their album Anywayawanna. "Doin' The Dot" was Boo's first solo album, followed by a UK number 7 triumph in 1990, selling 200,000 copies and debuting at number one on Billboard's dance chart in the United States, earning her first solo debut. The song was used as the title tune for the Bitmap Brothers' Magic Pockets video game a year ago. Boomania, her platinum-selling debut album, was largely self-written and self-produced in her bedroom. "Where Are You Baby," her second solo album, "Where Are You Baby?" "The Girlfriend" was the top hit on the charts in August 1990, and it's her best solo hit to date. "24 Hours" was Boomania's third and final single, and although it was a hit, it was less so than previous ones, stalling at number 25 in December 1990. Her debut was bolstered by her appearance at the 1991 BRIT Awards ceremony, where she was named the best British Breakthrough Act of the year.

In 1991, her "Why, Oh Why?"

On the soundtrack to A Rage in Harlem, a 1950s-style love ballad was included.

Boo was spotted lip-synching at a concert rather than performing live at a setback in July 1991, when touring Australia. After her appearance, the 21st Century Dance Club in Frankston, Australia, received "hundreds of reports" after she dropped her microphone, announcing she was on a back track. The incident was widely reported, and Boo's tour was cancelled for the remainder of her tour, citing influenza and fever.

Boo signed to WEA in 1992 and signed a new record contract.

Her follow-up album, GRRR!

Betty Boo was one of the UK's most disappointing debuts, with the number 62 at the top of the charts. Nevertheless, it did not develop "Let Me Take You There," a British hit single that debuted in August 1992. A new song, "I'm on My Way," featured a musical excerpt from The Beatles' "Lady Madonna" (which, oddly, was not a sample); the song's brass riff was re-created using all the original participants. However, the single did not sell well and landed at number 44 in October 1992, the first in the chart. "Hangover" was her second album, and it barely cracked the Top 50 when first released in April 1993. Clarkson refused a bid to join Maverick Records, and a Best Of compilation album, which was effectively an extended version of Boomania with additional remixes and a new running order, was released in 1999 and sold moderately well.

Clarkson formed WigWam, a pop duo formed in 2006 with Alex James, a bassist from Blur. They worked with music producer Ben Hillier and former Boo collaborators The Beatmasters as a team together. Despite collaborating on "an album of experimental yet universal 21st century pop," only one single of their musical collaboration, "WigWam," was released on Instant Karma Records on April 3, 2006.

"Take Off" was her first album release in August 2007. The song, which was featured on Radio 1's dance-orientated shows, was a joint venture with London-based dance artist Jack Rokka, and as such, it is much more dance-orientated than her previous work. She and some of her other songs performed in a live set at Manchester Pride in 2007. Betty Boo's signature look is revived, as well as the 'Boosters' – Betty Boo's backing dancers, who wear similar hair and clothing to hers – and the Betty Boo spiral. Clarkson appeared on ITV's Loose Women on October 16, 2007, to promote the single, and she has also appeared as an interviewee on BBC Three's Most Annoying Pop Songs... list, giving a rundown on several songs that made the Top 100 list.

On BBC Radio 4's Broadcasting House in July 2009, historian Kate Williams revealed that she is researching with Clarkson to produce a musical version of Williams' biography Mistress of Emma Hamilton.

Clarkson appeared on the track "Virtually Art" by The Feeling on the double-album version of their 2011 debut, Together We Were Made, number 2 track 2).

Betty Boo appeared on stage at the Penn Festival in July 2014, while in 2021 she was named as one of the Let's Rock retro music festival line-ups, which took place at various dates around the United Kingdom.

The artist revealed the single "Get Me to the Weekend" on January 10, 2022. On May 20, 2022, the second single "Shining Star" was released. Boomerang, her first album in 30 years, was released on October 14, 2022.
