Career
Gillespie was born in Woking, Surrey, Anne Francis Roden's second daughter (1920–2007), and Hans Henry Winterstein Gillespie (1910–1994), a London-based radiologist of Austrian nobility. Nicola Henrietta St. John Gillespie, her older sister, was born in 1946. In 1962, Dana Gillespie became the British Junior Water Skiing Champion.
She began recording in the 1960s in the folk style. Some of her performances as a youth fell into the teen pop category, as shown by John Carter and Ken Lewis' 1965 album "Thank You Boy" (1965), which was produced by Jimmy Page. Page appeared on Gillespie's debut album, Foolish Seasons, but was uncredited. Her acting career began shortly thereafter, and it dominated her musical career in the late 1960s and 1970s.
David Bowie wrote "Andy Warhol" for Gillespie in 1971, but her version of the song "You Are a Man" was not released until 1973 on her album Weren't Born a Man. Mick Ronson was also on guitar in her version. Weren't Born a Man was a singer who appeared backing vocals on Bowie's "It Ain't Simple" and the Spiders from Mars' "It Ain't Intuitable." Subsequent recordings have been released in the blues style, as seen with the London Blues Band. She is also known for her role as the original Mary Magdalene in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice's Jesus Christ Superstar's first London performance, which opened at the Palace Theatre in 1972. She has also appeared on the Original London Cast album. Gillespie played for the Austrian Mojo Blues Band in the 1980s.
She is a follower of late Indian spiritual guru Sri Sathya Sai Baba. She appeared at his Indian ashram on several occasions and has also released thirteen bhajan-based albums in Sanskrit.
