These songs were included on his self-titled debut album in 1975 as well as "That's Rock and Roll," Shaun Cassidy's number one hit single. In 1977, the album debuted at number 21 on the Billboard album chart and was rated gold for sales of more than 500,000 copies.

Boats Against the Current, Carmen's second album, came out in 1977 and received mixed praises. It featured back-up stars like Burton Cummings, Andrew Gold, Bruce Johnston, and Nigel Olsson. The album debuted on the Billboard Album chart for 13 weeks, peaking at number 45. "She Did It" was also a Top 20 single, but the title track only managed to scratch the bottom of the chart. Olivia Newton-John later performed the title track on her album Totally Hot. "Marathon Man," his first solo single not to reach the Billboard Hot 100 chart, was his third single taken from the album. However, Shaun Cassidy made the top ten in 1978 with Carmen's "Hey Deanie." Carmen had three compositions charting simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100, Cassidy's two biggest hits, and Carmen's own "She Did It" for several weeks in 1977.

Carmen released two more albums. Despite declining chart success, the single "Change of Heart" debuted in the pop Top 20 in late 1978 and single "It Hurts Too Much" debuted in 1980, but she briefly dropped out of the music industry in 1980, with Samantha Sang covering it. Carmen resurfaced on Geffen Records in 1985 with a second self-titled album and the big hit "I Wanta Hear It from Your Lips," a four-year-old woman. The single debuted on both the Adult Contemporary Top ten and the Pop Top 40. "I'm Through with Love," the follow-up single, "I'm Through with Love," climbed the Billboard Hot 100 and climbed to the top 20 of the Adult Contemporary chart's Top 20. "Maybe My Baby," a later version of the album, became a Country hit for Louise Mandrell, who reached number 8 on Billboard's Hot Country Songs chart. Mandrell was also covered by "I Want To Hear It From Your Lips" which was also on the same chart, with Mandrell only achieving to reach a peak of 35. Carmen's contribution to the hit film "Hungry Eyes" in 1987 reached number two on the Adult Contemporary Chart, as well as returning him to the Pop Top ten. Carmen's profile soared in 1988, when the nostalgic "Make Me Lose Control" album of songs recorded for the Seoul Summer Olympics remained at number one on Billboard's Hot 100 remained for three weeks in a row.

I Was Born to Love You, a stateside book that had only been released in Japan in 1998, but not in Japan as Winter Dreams. Carmen descheyed the use of a band on the record, while still playing the majority of the instruments and programming the drum parts himself. Carmen's album did not have a large audience, but she has continued to enjoy performing with other artists over the years. In 2000, he appeared with Ringo Starr and his All Star Band.
