Clairo Life

Claire Cottrill (born August 18, 1998), also known as Clairo, is an American singer-songwriter from Carlisle, Massachusetts.

Her fame has grown since she introduced "Pretty Girl" (2017), a lo-fi-produced video game that attracted over 40 million viewers on YouTube, triggering over 40 million views.

The video's popularity was attributed to the website's algorithm system, according to her.

The EP Diary 001 (2018) was her first work as a professional, followed by LP Immunity (2019). Claire was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and she is the niece of marketing executive Geoff Cottrill.

"Pretty Girl" was inspired by 1980s pop music, and that, although she was tagged with the word "bedroom pop" brand, it was not her intention to make that sort of music.

Clairo signed a new deal after the success of "Pretty Girl" in which her family is a member of The Fader magazine.

During an online debate that included her being identified as a "industry plant," her presentation of herself as a "do-it-yourself" artist was challenged.

Early life

Claire Cottrill was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and raised in Carlisle, Massachusetts. She is the niece of photographer and designer Geoff Cottrill, and Allie Cottrill, a marketing executive.

Cottrill began recording covers at the age of 13. She has worked for local companies, such as Blue Dry Goods. MTV called her to record a song for use as background music on one of their programs, but the song was never used. While attending Concord-Carlisle High School, she began posting music on Bandcamp under the names Clairo and DJ Baby Benz. In comparison to DJ mixes of rap music on SoundCloud, she continued to post covers and songs. She also had a YouTube channel where she would post news and short films.

"Do U Want a Fall in Love," she sang of a single but not an album. After releasing several home recordings (2014), a newbie in 2013 emerged. A few new EPS, including "Aquarius Boy," "Live Show, Moth Girl," "Metal Heart," and "Have a Nice Day," were among those that came after this in 2015.

Clairo's song "Pretty Girl" went viral on YouTube in late 2017. The song was recorded for an indie rock compilation benefiting the Transgender Law Center. She described the track as "using the people around me" during her recording of the "very shitty." I used like a little keyboard that I had and I was really into '80s pop music, so my mom was obsessed with it and inspired me to do something like that." She has attributed the video's popularity to YouTube's algorithm system. The video also became extremely popular on vaporwave-focused Facebook pages. By 2022, "Pretty Girl" had more than 81 million views on YouTube. The work, according to a piece by Joe Coscarelli of The New York Times, "bridges both worlds, with the coy, understated bedroom pop of 'Good Girl' and 'Flaming Hot Cheetos,' reaching sturdier numbers like '4EVER' and 'B.M.D.' "This is the best I can remember."

A month before "Pretty Girl" on YouTube was released, there was another video called "Flaming Hot Cheetos." By July 2018, it had earned 3 million views by July 2018. Major brands such as Capitol, RCA, and Columbia all expressed concern over "Pretty Girl"'s success, including Capitol, RCA, and Columbia. Jon Cohen, co-founder of The Fader, signed Clairo to the magazine's associated word, a 12-song record, and introduced her to Chance the Rapper's manager, Pat Corcoran. Haight Brand, a staffing company, became a client of Haight Brand near the end of 2017. Following the success of "Pretty Girl," a growing number of social media followers (specifically on discussion website Reddit) began to suspect that Clairo was a "industry company" who earned her father's nepotism. She denied the allegations, calling them sexist. The Ringer and The Guardian's writers also stated that her father's links aided in her unprecedented contract signing. “I certainly am not blind to the fact that life has been quicker for me than other people's experiences,” she told Rolling Stone in 2021. It would be foolish of me not to acknowledge the privilege I had from the start to be able to commit to a contract that doesn't have to do with keeping myself afloat financially.

Clairo's debut album, Diary 001, was released on May 25, 2018. Sasha Geffen, a Pitchfork, FADER contributor, wrote that the EP should support the "legions of naysayers who had dismissed her as a one-hit fluke or an industry plant." She also announced a headlining tour around North America in the month, as well as select dates for Dua Lipa. Her appearance at the Bowery Ballroom in New York in July was a sold-out show. Lollapalooza was the actress of October 2018. In 2019, she appeared at Coachella.

Clairo unveiled a new single named "Bags" on May 24, 2019, and her debut studio album Immunity, which was released on August 2, 2019. "Closer to You" and "Sofia" will be the first two singles from the album "Closer to You" and "Sofia." Apple Music selected Clairo as an Up Next Artist in August 2019, based on the album's commercial success. Clairo's debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live! she was on television doing "I Wouldn't Ask You" for the first time. The Ellen DeGeneres Show in September 2019 featured "Bags" on the Ellen DeGeneres Show a few days later. For the second year in a row, Clairo was named Pop Artist of the Year at the 2019 Boston Music Awards, as well as Album of the Year for Immunity. The year's top songs, including Pitchfork and Paste's lists of the best songs of the decade, featured "Bags" in more than 15 critics' lists ranked the year's top songs, including Pitchfork and Paste's Top Songs of the Year. The Guardian, Pitchfork, Billboard, and Los Angeles Times were among more than ten critics' end-of-year lists, including The Guardian, Pitchfork, Billboard, and The Los Angeles Times. Clairo was operated by Mike Ahern and Jimmy Bui as of 2019, as of 2019.

Clairo revealed in April 2020 that she had begun recording on her second album by posting a screenshot of a playlist titled "Album 2 (demos so far). Clairo formed Shelly, an indie-pop band formed in October of that year, as well as Josh Mehling and Noa Frances Getzug. On October 30, 2020, the group released two songs, "Steeem" and "Natural." Clairo's first single, "Blouse," was released on June 11, 2021, on her second studio album, Sling, which was announced the same day. Sling is Cottrill's album, but it also serves as a record of her efforts to reevaluate her life's goals. The Laurel Canyon imprint is reproduced in Sling, which replaces Immunity's sparse electronic flourishes with rich, acoustic string, and the delicate swell of brass. The album was released on July 16, 2021. Clairo descended on the United States leg of the Sling tour in February 2022. After a technical incident at her Toronto gig left her with temporary hearing loss, she postponed the last three dates of her North American tour. Her first show of the UK tour in Bristol had to be cancelled after two songs due to a bout of sinusitis that was affecting her voice, causing her panic attack on stage and walking away from it. The Glasgow show had been postponed, but the show in Manchester went on the day after, and the show's last UK show of the tour was in London.

Personal life

Cottrill was once in a youth when she began her career, she was a member of the London-based band SCORS.

In 2017, Cottrill began attending Syracuse University.

At the age of 17, Cottrill was diagnosed with juvenile idiopathic arthritis. In May 2018, Cottrill came out bisexual to her followers by taking to Twitter. She explained in an interview that making friends in college aided her in her decision to come out, as they were openly gay and excited by "their courage and their willingness to be revealed." She wrote an open letter to then-UK Equalities Minister Liz Truss in July 2020 calling for a ban on all forms of LGBT conversion therapy.
