Camilo Wong "Chino" Moreno, born June 20, 1973, is an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist best known as the lead singer and contributing guitarist of Deftones.
He is also a member of Team Sleep, Crosses, Saudade, and Palms, as well as Team Sleep, Team Sleep, Crosses, Saudade, and Palms. Moreno is well-known for his screams, as well as his soothing and dramatic tenor voice when singing melodically.
He debuted in 2007 on number 51 in Hit Parader's "Top 100 Metal Vocalists of All Time."
Early life
Moreno was born in Sacramento, California, the second of five children. His mother is of Mexican and Chinese descent, and his father is Mexican. The nickname "Chino" is the Spanish-language word for Chinese people, shortened from "Chinito" (little Chinese one) a moniker who was "given to him as a child by his uncles because he seemed mainly Asian, while the majority Mexicans are mestizo."
He grew up in the Oak Park area and attended McClatchy High School, where he met Abe Cunningham and Stephen Carpenter, with whom he formed the Deftones in 1988. Moreno had worked at Tower Records' shipping department before starting to be a professional musician.
Musical career
Moreno began jamming regularly with his high-school friends Abe Cunningham and Stephen Carpenter, which culminated in the formation of the Deftones. The club began playing club shows in less than two years. They were signed to Maverick Records after one of their agents watched them play in Los Angeles. Adrenaline (1995), Terry Date's first commercially released album, was the first commercially available album. Although the album wasn't a instant success, extensive touring, word-of-mouth, and Internet marketing gave the band a loyal fan base, as well as assisting Adrenaline in obtaining over 220,000 copies without the singles "7 Words" and "Bored" (as well as their music videos) receiving any airplay. Around the Furnace, the band's 1997 debut, expanded its sound, spent more time with Date, and paying closer attention to the album's production. The album was widely awaited and propelled the Deftones to fame in the alternative metal market on the back of radio and MTV airplay for the singles "My Own Summer (Shove It)" and "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away).
In 2000, White Pony was introduced to critical acclaim and unprecedented commercial success. Frank Delgado had joined the band as a full-time member, adding to the band's sound, while Moreno contributed guitar lines in lieu of vocals. The album is regarded as a turning point for the band in terms of experimentation, with influences from new wave, dream pop, and trip hop. "Change (In the House of Flies)" and "Digital Bath" were among the album's highlights that were supported. As a rap-influenced reinterpretation of White Pony's closing track, "Pink Maggit," a single named "Back to School (Mini Maggit) was released. The band has previously opposed to its publication, despite being profitable and a fan favorite, although it is unclear if this is still the case. As the album's opening track, White Pony was subsequently re-released with "Back to School (Mini Maggit). Deftones received the 2001 Grammy Award for their album "Elite."
Moreno suffered a throat injury as a result of heavy screaming in 2001 and was forced to miss at least four shows. He had inflammation in his right vocal cord and partial paralysis of the left vocal cord. During the remainder of their supporting tour, bassist Chi Cheng took over vocal duties that required screaming, while Moreno performed the lyrics' more softer tunes, despite doctors' advice to avoid performing to allow time for recovery, as well as rumors that the band will cancel the remaining stretch of the tour with Godsmack and Puddle of Muddd.
In the midst of declining creativity in contemporary metal, the eponymous Deftones were introduced in 2003 and the band was praised for the heavy album's growth and originality. "It's all on record," Moreno said. We told motherfuckers not to lump us in with nu metal because if those bands fall apart, we aren't going to be there." B-Sides & Rarities were first published in 2005, bringing together unreleased and unreleased material accumulated since 1995. After a protracted and tumultuous recording process, close to Moreno's departure from the Deftones, Saturday Night Wrist was complete. Later on, he said it had been "a seriously bad experience" and he "wasn't sure if [he] was going to return" at the time the band was on a self-imposed hiatus." Moreno, who eventually finished the album in early 2006, said it was more of a compromise between all of the members' influences, from their brutal and brooding heavy signature seen on Adrenaline and Around the Fur to the more experimental sounds heard on White Pony and Deftones. The band saw a significant decline on the album's first week's sales relative to their two previous releases.
When bassist Chi Cheng was critically injured in a car crash in November 2008, they were in a barely aware state and later a partially conscious state up until his death in April 2013. "We discovered that this album doesn't accurately reflect who we are now as individuals and as musicians," the group announced an indefinite extension of Eros in 2009. The group, known as Vega, began working on Diamond Eyes, a new collection that was released on May 4, 2010. "Rocket Skates," "You've Seen the Butcher," and "Diamond Eyes" were among the popular singles released at the time. Deftones' seventh studio album, Koi No Yokan, was released in November 2012. As its singles, "Leathers," "Tempest," and "Swerve City" were out. Gore's eighth studio album was released in 2016. The Deftones' ninth studio album, Ohms, which attracted significant critical acclaim in 2020.
Moreno began work on a side project, Team Sleep, during the making of Deftones' White Pony. In May 2005, the group unveiled their self-titled debut album.
Moreno revealed that he was working on a new side project called Crosses, which stars Far guitarist Shaun Lopez and Chuck Doom. Moreno referred to the effort as "minimal and soothing," and "it's sort of like the stuff I like listening to when I'm not screaming my head off." On August 2, 2011, the band's debut self-titled EP was released. EP 2 will be released next year.
Moreno had joined former Isis members Jeff Caxide, Aaron Harris, and Bryant Clifford Meyer in a side project referred to as Palms in April 2012. On June 25, 2013, the band's first album was released.
Moreno joined with guitarist Dr. Know of Bad Brains, drummer Mackie Jayson (Bad Brains, Cro-Mags), jazz keyboardist John Medeski of Medeski, Martin, and Wood; and bassist Chuck Doom (Team Sleep, Crosses) in April 2016. On April 28, 2016, the band appeared on BitTorrent Bundle for their first single.
Moreno has appeared on several younger audiences' songs, including "Bender" by Sevendust, "Paralytic" by Dead Poetic, "Vengeance Is Mine" by Droid, "Surrender Your Sons," by Norma Jean, "Surrender Your Sons," and "Reprogrammed to Hate" by Whitechapel. Moreno's album This Is War came out in 2009, but the song was not finished. He performed "The Kill" on May 2, 2010 with 30 Seconds to Mars.
Moreno will appear in Thrihnukagigur's first public concert inside a volcano's magma chamber in June 2016.
Faith No More's Mike Patton, Bad Brains' H.R., The Smiths' Morrissey and Prince are among the best vocal influences on Moreno. His musical influences include a variety of styles and genres, including experimental bands Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark (OMD), Depeche Mode, Thompson Twins, and the Human League. Also inspired by The Cure, Bad Brains, The Smiths, My Bloody Valentine, Cocteau Twins, Public Enemy, Duran Duran, Duran Duran, The Smashing Pumpkins, Portishead, Helmet, Jawbox, Faith No More, Slayer, Kids Against Boys, Jane's Addiction, and Weezer are among others. He compiled five non-metal records that inspired him, including The Cure's Pornography, Helium's No Guitars, Mogwai's EP+2, My Bloody Valentine's Loveless, and The Smashing Pumpkins' Siamese Dream. He also compiled a list of his thirteen favorite albums for The Quietus, which featured Small Craft on a Milk Sea by Brian Eno, Fever Ray's self-titled album, Venus Luxure No.1 Baby by Boys, Infrared by Boys, Born to Mack by Boy, The Blue Moods of Spain by Spain and Standards by Tortoise.
"I was one of those boys who thought heavy metal was devil music," Moreno said in an interview with Spin in August 1998. I can't decide whether I'm a metal fan or a hip hop fan because there are so many crappy bands out there. I just like a little bit of everything. I suspect other people are starting to believe that way too." Moreno said he was aware that people regarded him as gay, and he loves girly stuff."
"[Sometimes] my songs don't concern with particular topics," he wrote about his often vague yet image-heavy poetic lyrics. I write down the feelings of the moment, but it's not always easy to identify the lyrics or give a logical explanation to the words. What I write is also a reaction to the music we produce, so the Deftones' sound isn't popular, but it doesn't convey happy emotions. In a somewhat different light, my favorite songs of the album revolve around love, which is quite different.
