Life and career
Desmond Mendez was born in Rio Bueno, Jamaica, on April 6, 1980. He began competing in singing competitions at the age of five. He attended Rio Bueno Primary and High School.
Mendez has been a member of the Warlord International and Bass Odyssey sound systems. Tony Mentol made his debut with the single "It's You" in 2004. He eventually aliased to Charly Black and began a series of cuts for brands such as Coppershot, M Bass, and VP, the last of which released "Buddy Buddy" in 2008, making it one of the country's most well-known dancehall hits. He released "Gyal You a Party Animal" as his most popular single in 2014, before becoming known as "Party Animal" for short. Kurt Riley's Jambe-An riddim fueled the song's success outside of Jamaica and has gained huge audiences around South America. It was released by Allezgo Productions and Casablanca Records in early 2016, shortly followed by the debut of a music video for the song on YouTube months later. On Spotify, it has more than 100 million streams.
Other international music artists, including Maluma, Daddy Yankee, and Jillionaire, have also remixed the song. Maluma, on the other hand, revealed on Instagram that he was unable to launch his remixed version due to legal issues.
He appeared in Victoria, Seychelles, in May 2016, and was warmly welcomed by critics.
Mendez has been more involved on live performances since the success of "Gyal You a Party Animal" later this year. He made a live appearance in Mexico in October 2016, including his hit "Gyal You a Party Animal" and Hoist & Wine. The Hispanic Radio Network and station Los 40 all sponsored this appearance. He also appeared in San José, Costa Rica, on December 2nd, where "Gyal You a Party Animal" was named Diamond in Central America, making him the first Jamaican music artist to be named Diamond in the country.
