Carly Rose Sonenclar (born April 20, 1999) is an American singer and actress.

On the second season of The X Factor in December 2012, she came as the runner-up.

Early and personal life

Sonenclar was born in New York City and now resides in Mamaroneck, New York. She began singing at the age of two, imitating several of the performers on the early years of American Idol. She took numerous singing, dancing, piano, and acting lessons, and one of her mentors recommended that a New York City talent agency recruit her. Russell, her older brother, also graduated from the University of Delaware, loves softball and has a sister named Russell. She takes piano lessons and enjoys writing songs.

In 2017, she graduated from Rye Neck High School. She graduated from the University of Southern California in the spring of 2021.

Sonenclar is Jewish.

Acting career

Sonenclar began her career in 2006 with a stage performance of The Night of the Hunter at the New York Musical Theatre Festival, where she appeared in Pearl's lead role. She made her Broadway debut in Les Miserables as Young Cosette the year before. She appeared in Little House on the Prairie, the Musical's national tour in 2009, starring Melissa Gilbert, who had originated the principal role of Carrie. Sonenclar made her television debut on PBS as Gilda Flip, the newest Prankster in season three of The Electric Company, a Sesame Workshop product.

Chloe (Alice's daughter) appeared in the short-lived musical Wonderland on Broadway and the earlier Tampa workshop in 2011. She received good praise in this capacity, including one from New York Times theater critic Charles Isherwood, who described Sonenclar as a "most natural actor" and a "most proficient singer" and compared her to Sutton Foster. She is a featured soloist on Sony Masterworks' cast CD and has been named as the 2011 Best Young Performer by broadwayworld.com. In The Big Bank, Sonenclar performed Parsley in The Big Bank, a musical that premiered at the New York Musical Theater Festival in October 2011.

Sonenclar has appeared in two feature films, The Nanny Diaries playing as the "child of nanny" and a small part in The Traveling Pants 2. She has appeared on television guestlists numerous times.

Singing career

Sonenclar auditioned for the second season of The X Factor USA in 2012, with Anthony Newley and Leslie Bricusse's "Feeling Well" (famously covered by Nina Simone). Both four judges applauded Sonenclar's (L.A. Reid's words: "You may be 13 years old, but your soul is old." "She was given the opportunity to advance to the next round after Simon Cowell gave her "4,833 yeses." She made it through the first day of X Factor's "bootcamp," where she performed "Pumped Up Kicks" with Beatrice Miller after her successful initial audition. She was one of the sixty or so contestants who appeared at bootcamp that day and was one of the 60 or so applicants who applied to remain. She was selected to compete in the "teens" category at the end of bootcamp and was invited to compete in the "judges' houses" segment of the competition. Britney Spears, the "teen" category mentor, performed the song "Brokenhearted," and Spears' guest judge will be judge Will.i.am. Both Spears and Willi.am's appearances were positive, and will.i.am's will remarked elibly that she was "possessed"; will.i.am remarked appreciatively. Sonenclar then advanced to the Top 16 round, where she performed "Good Feeling" and then the Top 13 round, where she performed "It Will Rain." Sonenclar made the top 12 round, where she performed "My Heart Will Go On," the second-most-voted for person in the competition so far, behind only Tate Stevens, which was a distinction she earned again after progressing to the Top 10 rounds.

She performed "Over the Rainbow" on November 21, earning her standing ovation from all four judges, propelling her into the Top 8 round on Sunday. It was revealed that she had been the most voted-for contestant in the competition that night. On November 28, she performed "Rolling in the Deep," propelling her into the Top 6 round, and she was declared to have been the top most voted-for contestant in the country. She then progressed to the Finale round, where she performed "Feeling Well" (with LeAnn Rimes), and "Hallelujah." It was revealed on December 20, 2012, that she had finished second in the competition behind Tate Stevens.

In 2013, Sonenclar revealed that Syco Music has a recording option on her and that they were "looking to find the right record label" for her. "Unfortable" was her debut original song on June 2013 as well as another song titled "Fighters." She appeared at the inaugural ceremony of the 19th Maccabiah Games at Teddy Stadium in Jerusalem the following month. As part of the Stand Up for a Cure 2013 Concert Series, she appeared in Times Square in August 2013.

Sonenclar appeared in "Dissonant Voices," a special Victims Unit of Law & Order, which aired in November 2013, during the show's fifteenth season. Sonenclar has appeared on several occasions with Boyce Avenue. "Everybody's Watching" continued to attend public school and launched an original music video in 2014. In July 2014, she appeared at Provident Bank Park in Pomona, New York, where she performed three original songs, "Aliens," "Weekend," and "Everybody's Watching." Sonenclar debuted on Fox Weekly's list of Most Influential X Factor USA Contestants for her audition appearance of "Feeling Good" on May 29, 2014.

Sonenclar's debut single, "Birds & Bees," was released on June 19, 2019.
