Early life

Birdy was born in Lymington, England, United Kingdom, on May 15, 1996. Rupert Benjamin van den Bogaerde, a writer, appears in the book Daybreak Into Darkness under the name Rupert Bogarde; Sophie Patricia (née Roper-Curzon), a concert pianist, is her mother. Birdy learned to play the piano at the age of seven and began writing her own songs at the age of eight. She said that listening to classical music and the songs her mother performed has a significant effect on her sound. She and her husband were married in 1995 and have two other children, Jake and Caitlin 1999. Moses and Sam, her father's first marriage, also have two elder half-brothers.

Birdy attended Durlston Court Prep School in Barton on Sea, Priestlands School, and Brockenhurst College, a sixth form college in the New Forest. Captain John Christopher Ingram Roper-Curzon, the 20th Baron Teynham, was her maternal grandmother, and she grew up on the family farm near Lymington, Hampshire. Sir Dirk Bogarde, her great-uncle, was her aunt. She has ancestry from England, Belgium (Flemish), Dutch, and Scottish.

Lucilla, Birdy's second given name, was the name of her father's stepmother.

Birdy's stage name comes from the fact that her parents gave her as a baby because she opened her mouth like a young one when being fed.

Birdy appeared live on piano for BBC Radio 3's Pianothon in London in 2009. Birdy also performed a cover version of Bon Iver's "Skinny Love" in January 2011. The song reached her first hit on the UK Singles Chart, peaking at 17. Fearne Cotton, a UK radio DJ, named the single as "Record of the Week," resulting in it being added to BBC Radio 1's Blist playlist as soon as it was announced in March 2011. Sophie Muller produced the song's official music video. The song appeared on The Vampire Diaries episode "The Sun Also Rises," which aired on May 5th, 2011. Birdy performed at the San Diego Music Festival in 2013. Fire Within, her second studio album, was revealed on July 10, 2013. Birdy was shot in the studio as well as a preview of two songs, "Wings" and "No Angel," which are both included on the album. "Wings" was the first official single released on July 22, 2013, and "All You Never Say" was sent to Birdy's mailing list subscribers and posted on YouTube on August 15, 2013. On The Vampire Diaries episode "Home," the song "Wings" was also included (her eighteenth birthday). On September 23, 2013 the album was released in the United Kingdom and some neighboring countries and received mainly critical feedback. The album was released in North America on June 3, 2014. On September 24, a new EP named Breathe was released.

In 2013, Birdy went on tours of America and Australia. A reviewer described her as a sensational pianist who tends to be shy and timid, but whose voice "rings throughout the theatre." The only criticism was that there was "completely lacking" was a sense of crowd involvement. The tour also included appearances on TV shows such as Sunrise, on which she sang "Wings." At the Logie Awards in Melbourne in April 2013, Birdy performed "Skinny Love" also.

Birdy performed "Let Her Go" by Passenger on BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge in September 2013. This track appears on the BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge 2013 album. Birdy covered Madonna's "Lucky Star" in October 2014, according to BBC Radio 2's Sounds of the 80s. Birdy appeared on four of the Native Roses album's tracks this year, in which her elder brother, Moses, is a drummer.

Birdy contributed three songs to the soundtrack for the film "The Fault in Our Stars": "Tee Shirt," "Best Shot" (with Jaymes Young) and "Not About Angels." Both videos were released. Birdy appears on David Guetta's album Listen, which is included on the album "I'll Keep Loving You."

In June 2015, Birdy's song "Wings," from her second album, was used as the soundtrack to the Lloyds Bank's 250th anniversary Horse Story advertisements.

With Rhodes, Birdy co-wrote "Let It All Go" in August 2015. The single was released in the United Kingdom on September 11th, 2015, as a result of digital download. On BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge, Birdy performed a cover of Firestone, the first by Kygo ft. Conrad Sewell. This track appeared on the BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge 2015 album.

"Keeping Your Head Up," Birdy's first single from her third album, Beautiful Lies, for which she had begun writing material in 2014 while touring in America, was released in January 2016. The album's second single, "Beautiful Lies," was released in February. In March, the album's third single, "Wild Horses," was released. On March 25, 2016, the album was first released. The Japanese Edition of Beautiful Lies was released on April 20, 2016, with a bonus track titled "Lights."

Birdy later said that this album was what she was most proud of when she first heard about Beautiful Lies. "The album is about growing up and not accepting change." It's not really about growing up; it's about lying to yourself. It's about that I'd skipped a lot of growing up with my family. It's also inspired by 'Memors of a Geisha,' so it has an Asian feel to it and it's about being a much happier individual."

Originally by Coldplay for 3FM, Birdy performed a cover of 'Adventure of a Lifetime' on April 1, 2016. On April 16, Birdy Limited Edition Vinyl of the songs 'Lost It All' and 'Take It Everywhere I Go' was released on Record Store Day. Birdy did a cover of "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman on BBC Radio 1 Live Lounge on April 25, 2016, and on April 27, she performed a cover of "Sorry" by Justin Bieber at SiriusXM Studios.

On the 8th of May 2016, Birdy performed 'Wild Horses' at the Birmingham Festival Hall in London's opening ceremony of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA) awards night. She was also the face of the REDValuentino spring/summer campaign for 2016 and 2017.

Birdy released three digital albums without publicity in June 2016. The albums were largely composed of instrumental works starring her on the piano, and were titled "Ornithology," "Vogelfrei," and "Nightbird." She posted these albums on YouTube in April 2018, as part of Believe SAS, a French company that distributes digital music for independent labels and artists.

Passenger introduced "Beautiful Birds" on September 23, 2016, including Birdy. Sigma, which featured Birdy, premiered "Find Me" on November 4, 2016. In its 20 May 2017 issue, the song topped at number 36 on the UK Singles Chart and number one on the Billboard Dance Club Songs chart.

After the introduction of Beautiful Lies, Birdy undertook extensive touring, including a tour of the US and an Asian tour from Japan to Singapore. Her band had grown from four to five, with almost entirely new lineup by this time. Charlotte Hatherley (guitar), Joel Grainger (violin), Richard Evans (bass), Jay Sikora (drums), and Hazel Mills (keyboards). "What a different world," she says of Asia. The audiences were incredibly reserved and quiet, and after each performance, there would be a lot of people, and then they would start clapping; it made her wonder if they liked her. They didn't really clap that much, but then after the show, they were going crazy and screaming. She found it "very strange."

In an interview with Interview magazine on March 22, Birdy explained how she had always had ideas but not confident enough to assert them. She felt that she was a lot stronger and that everything was better, with 'Beautiful Lies.' Birdy claimed that her second album had gone wrong, that she had compromised too much, allowing others to influence her too much. In comparison, she had been'really bossy' with 'Beautiful Lies'. In conclusion, she wrote that she loves writing for film and would like to do more of it; it was a 'natural' progression for her career.

In the Autumn 2016 issue, Birdy was included on the front cover of Wonderland magazine, as well as a accompanying shoot and interview. Birdy explained in a letter to the magazine that her mother was a concert pianist and that a large portion of her family was very musical. Her mother will perform classical music while her father will play "poppies" like Tracy Chapman and The Beatles. It was a good blend of genres, she told the journal.

On October 3, Birdy performed two songs at the BFI Luminous fundraising gala. She appeared to be composing content for her forthcoming album when she arrived at the function, but it was still in the early stages.

Warner/Chappell Music, Warner Music Group's publishing arm, had signed Birdy to a worldwide publishing contract, according to Variety.com in December 2017. Birdy was an outstanding performer, there was more to come from her, and she looked forward to working with her in the years ahead, according to Warner/Chappell UK managing director Mike Smith.

On September 4, 2020, Birdy took a break from music and released "Open Your Heart," a new single. This was shortly after the announcement of a new EP, Piano Sketches, was announced. It includes four tracks, mainly piano based.

Birdy unveiled her fourth album, Young Heart, on January 22, 2021, on her social media. It was announced on April 30th and it has 16 tracks. Young Heart's first single, "Surrender," was released on the same day as the announcement. "Loneliness," her second single, was announced on February 12th. Etta James, Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake, and Nina Simone are all among the album's influences on the album's sound, and she supervised the majority of the project in Los Angeles and Nashville. "Evergreen," "Little Blue," "Nobody Knows Me Like You Do," and "You Know What You Do."
