Basetsana Julia "Bassie" Kumalo (born 29 March 1974) is a South African television presenter, beauty pageant champion, businesswoman, and philanthropist.

She began her career in 1990 when she was named Miss Soweto and Miss Black South Africa at the age of 16.

She was crowned Miss South Africa in 1994 and became Miss World's first runner-up in the same year.

Early life

Kumalo was born in Soweto, South Africa. Philip Makgalemele, her bus driver's father, died in 2003, and Beatrice Makgalemele, her school teacher mother, died in 2006. She went to Thabisang Primary School. Kumalo was sent to Trinity Secondary School in Lenasia when the Soweto schools became unbalanced in 1986.

Her two sisters and brother spent their youth helping keep the family afloat by making sandwiches to sell at soccer games every weekend.

Personal life

Kumalo dated boxer Dingaan Thobela before and during her tenure as Miss South Africa.

When she was crowned Miss Soweto, she met her husband Romeo Kumalo, a Vodacom executive and former broadcaster. They began dating in 1997 and married in 2000. A boy named Nkosinathi Gabriel was born in 2005 and was their first child. uShaka Kgositsile Emmanuel, his second son, was born in 2012.

Career

Kumalo was crowned Miss Soweto in 1990 and 1991. Kumalo left school with the intention of following in her mother's footsteps as a tutor, but it was not long before she started attending the University of Venda to study education. Kumalo went on to win after her mother entered her in a Miss South Africa pageant.

When she was the reigning Miss South Africa, she began presenting the lifestyle television show Top Billing. Kumalo formed a relationship with Patience Stevens, the show's producer. Kumalo owned a 51% interest in Tswelopele Productions, which was born in 2006. Impumelelo has rated the company as one of South Africa's top 300 empowerment firms. The company's flagship product, Top Billing TV show, was produced for SABC3. Tswelopele joined Union Alliance Media and became listed on the JSE Securities Exchange in SA in 1999, making Kumalo one of South Africa's youngest black women directors. Top Billing's success has added to the Tswelopele brand in recent years, such as the Afrikaans magazine program Pasella on SABC2 and the Swati youth show Seskohona on SABC1.

Basetsane joined Gauteng Travel Academy as a director in 2001.

In 2016, she was guest judge in the final Miss South Africa 2016 beauty pageant, held in the Big Top Arena in Gauteng, South Africa. Television networks M-Net and Mzansi Magic have carried out the message.

Kumalo is the President of the Business Women's Association of South Africa. Kumalo became a new Tawana shareholder as a result of a merger with her investment firm Pro Direct 189. Vhangana Energy Resources Limited, Tactic Group Limited, SME Financial Holdings Limited, Morongwa Investment Holdings, Seven Falls, Q2 Petroleum, and PHAB Holdings are among Unipalm Investment Holdings' boards.

Kumalo began a clothing line in 2000 under the brand Stature Ladies wear by Bassie, which is sold by Ackerman's department stores in 240 outlets around Sub-Saharan Africa. She has since discontinued the product line.

Kumalo launched an eyewear collection in 2002 under the Bassie brand, which is distributed worldwide by Torga Optical (60 stores). Bassie Red cosmetics textrange was introduced in 100 Foschini stores around the country, followed by the Bassie Gold range in 2006.

Kumalo was voted 74th on the list of the 100 Greatest South Africans in 2004, the only Miss South Africa on the list. The Fashion Icon Award was given to Kumalo by the Cape Town Fashion Festival in 2006. Femina Magazine named her as one of South Africa's top ten most glamorous women. She was named by the Sunday Times and Elle Magazine as the most fashionable female magazine/entertainment show host in 2002 and 2003. Nelson Mandela awarded an honorary scholarship for Overseas Studies in 1994.

Kumalo is also a winner of the annual Rapport/City Press Prestige Awards.

Kumalo contributed to the book Inspirational Women at Work, which focuses on the country's current image of leadership. Kumalo introduces Recipes from the Heart, which stars 36 of South Africa's most popular celebrities.

She is the editor-at-large of the Top Billing journal. Kumalo served as the Beauty Editor for DRUM magazine during her tenure.

Kumalo appeared on Metro FM for a brief period of time when she hosted the Breakfast show on August 10, 2006. She was terrified after three hours on the microphone.
