Bonang Dorothy Matheba (born 25 June 1987) is a South African television presenter, radio presenter, producer, photographer, and philanthropist.

Born in Mahikeng, North West, she is best known for her flamboyant presentation skills and her iconic voice.

She appeared on LIVE (now Live Amp), a SABC One music showcase that has thrown her in the spotlight.

She is also known for being the first black South African woman to be published in numerous publications in 2011. In 2011, she became the first South African woman to debut B*Dazzled, the first black South African reality show.

She was the first international ambassador for the cosmetic brand Revlon outside of the United States in 2014, making her the first South African to host the pre-ceremony.

She became the first African woman to receive an E in 2015. News Special Africa on E! In 2016, she and three other women were featured on Forbes Woman Africa's cover, as well as three others who were all given a spotlight for being the Faces of Entrepreneurship.

She wrote From A to B, and her own reality show Being Bonang premiered in 2017.

As for 2018, she was a featured on the GQ SA's power issue in the September edition.

Early life

Bonang was born in Nagoeng, North West, to Charlotte Mokoena, the Executive Vice President of Human Resource and Corporate Affairs of Sasol, and Gampi Matheba, a senior lecturer at North-West University, on June 25. She belongs to the Bantu-speaking ethnic group Tswana.

The family was relocated to Leondale, Johannesburg's East, while Bonang attended Fourways High School, a prestigious government co-ed school.

Personal life

Matheba dated Slikour, the local hip-hop musician, until 2009. Slikour reportedly dumped Matheba by a Facebook message, according to reports. Matheba dated record producer and disc jockey Euphonik in 2012, a milestone. Euphonik was charged with assault after it emerged that he had physically assaulted her. Since the couple reconciled, she dropped the charges. People argued Matheba lied about the case even though she dropped the charges. Matheba denied these allegations, saying, "I never knew how badly I would be treated when the story of my break-up was leaked." It was one of the most painful experiences, and I am often wondering how I survived," a reference to him in her book, From A to B. In the second version of the book, she deleted the reference.

Matheba dated rapper AKA from late 2015 to 2017. AKA was dating and impregnated disc jockey DJ Zinhle, who revealed their fling in August 2015 after their split.

Matheba has kept a large portion of her private and personal life private from this point forward, and not much is aware of it.

Career

Matheba appeared on the SABC 2 kids show Manhattan Fantasy Challenge in 2002 when she was 15. She has appeared in other SABC 2 kids shows. After leaving varsity, Matheba auditioned for the inaugural season of the SABC 1 music show LIVE (now Live Amp). She was later announced as the show's co-host alongside Tbo Touch. Her presenting duties were a huge success, and that's when her sobriquet "Queen B" was born. On August 31, 2012, her last episode was broadcast as she announced that she would be leaving the show. After she descended from LIVE, she hosted many other programs, including Clash of the Choirs SA, Afternoon Express, Top Billing, and KFC Taste Kitchen.

Matheba has hosted numerous award shows and notable events, most notably MTV Africa Music Awards 2016 and Miss South Africa 2018, and curated the pre-shows for the 2014 MTV Europe Music Awards and BET Awards 2016. Matheba co-hosted the Global Citizen: Mandela 100 concert with comedian Trevor Noah, supermodel Naomi Campbell, and other notable public figures on December 2nd.

Matheba played Nurse Seipati on the SABC 1 show InterSEXions in 2008. Matheba starred and co-produced the documentary film Public Figure, which premiered on March 9 at Manchester Film Festival in 2019.

In 2017, Matheba Entertainment, a Malaysian production company, was established. Being Bonang, which is the 1Magic reality show, highlights Matheba's daily life.

In May 2022, she co-hosted Africa Magic Viewers' Choice Awards.

Matheba played Queen Nandi and also the executive producer of the forthcoming Shaka Ilembe, both toward the end of May 2021.

Matheba received a call from radio station YFM in 2009, in which she was informed that she would be added to the current line-up of presenters. "The B* Hive," she's own weekend afternoon show, was a huge hit, mainly focusing on young listeners. In 2014, she left the radio show.

In 2015, Matheba was introduced as a new radio DJ for radio station Metro FM. Siphokazi January, who was the new Metro FM veteran, was fired by her. The Front Row of Matheba had a raving and joyful audience until the station's boss was fired after an on-air reshuffle that resulted in Bonang hosting the show alongside her rumored longtime rival Lerato Kganyago who was missing as a result. Bonang resigned from the radio station the next day after being outraged by a lack of contact.

Matheba began collaborating with retailer Legit in 2008, launching "Just B" her first clothing collection. She then collaborated with a London-based designer to create "Baby Star" handbag set.

Woolworths, a luxury South African retail store chain, announced a joint venture with Bonang in 2014. They discontinued the lingerie line "Distraction By Bonang," which is also available in the case of new collections.

Matheba and Superbalist unveiled a series of T-shirts titled "BONANG by Bonang Matheba" in 2018. The T-shirts had famous Bonang quotes on them, including "Mo'ghel," "Give The People What They Want" and "#IAmBonang."

Matheba exclusively collaborated with Woolworths in the introduction of a luxurious Méthode Cap Classique (MCC) on March 18, 2019. The venture made her the first black woman to be accepted to the Méthode Cap Classique Association, making her the first black woman to be admitted to the Méthode Cap Classique Association.

She was voted ambassador of cosmetic brand Revlon in South Africa in 2013. The agreement made her the first international ambassador for the brand outside of the United States.

Matheba was unveiled in October 2016 as an ambassador for Cîroc in Africa, alongside fashion designer David Tlale, hip hop musician Da L.E.S., and club DJ DJ DJ DJ DJ DJ DJ DJ Dimplez.

After a trip to Brazil in 2017, she was named the new African Brand Ambassador for Ipanema sandals, succeeding Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen. It was later revealed that she had attended meetings with the Brazilian sandal-makers and even shot an advertisement in Rio de Janeiro.

Matheba signed an endorsement agreement with Cell C in 2018, a deal that culminated in her collaboration with them to also launch her own smartphone app and an emoji pack named "BMoji." Among Bonang's endorsements include Peugeot, BIC Razors, Brutal Fruit, Diva Divine Hair, Lifestyle Pads, and Courvoisier.

Bonang was named as Samsung South Africa's ambassador for the S20 and the Z Flip in 2020. In September 2020, she was featured on a model Rich Mnisi's cover in Glamour Magazine.

Matheba's autobiographical book From A to B was published by Black Bird Books' Thabiso Mahlape on June 7, 2017. The book received critical feedback from the South African public, with some of them shaming the book for a series of spelling, grammatical, and factual inconsistencies. The outcry resulted in the book being taken from bookstore shelves by the book selling behemoth Exclusive Books, a book chain. It was later upgraded to a second edition, where many of the previous mistakes were fixed.
