Career
Kaplan was already an excellent cappella performer, performing in various styles, such as jazz and opera. Fermata Nowhere, an all-male cappella group, formed during his time in college. In 2009, the group became the first community college act to win the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA). He received the award for his "Best Rhythm Section" during the finals, making him the first vocal bass to receive the distinction. The award was named "Best Vocal Percussionist" before he was selected. He performed with the Singcopation group in his junior year of college. The Montery Jazz Festival Competition was a success in his first year as a member.
When Pentatonix's original members, Kirstin Maldonado, Mitch Grassi, and Scott Hoying were looking for a bassist and a beatboxer, Kaplan joined Pentatonix in 2011. The group arrived the day before the casting for The Sing-Off's third season began. The group enrolled in the auditions and later went on to win the season. Kaplan served as the group's vocal bass, but he also sang lead roles.
Kaplan co-founded A Cappella Academy, a summer camp for 12–18 year-old children, in 2014, to learn about cappella music and performance.
Pentatonix received their first Grammy Award for Best Arrangement, Instrumental, or A Cappella for their Daft Punk medley at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards. They were honoured again at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards for their interpretation of "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy." The group received their third Grammy Award for Best Country Duo/Group Performance at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards for its cover of "Jolene," which starred Dolly Parton.
"Fields and Pier," Kaplan's first solo album under the title Avriel & the Sequoias, was released on April 29, 2017. Sage and Stone, his debut EP, was released on June 9.
Following their planned tour, Kaplan revealed on May 12, 2017 that he would leave Pentatonix. In a video announcing his resignation, he said that although he loved being in the organization, it was difficult for him to keep up with the organization's demanding schedule, which required him to spend less time with his family. On September 3, Pentatonix's last show with Pentatonix was held at the Champlain Valley Fair in Essex Junction, Vermont.
In October 2019, Kaplan announced his first solo tour. On November 5, he revealed his second EP 'll Get By.' The project, which had been supposed to be announced on January 24, 2020, was delayed and later revealed on February 28 due to Kaplan's signing to Fantasy Records.
Kaplan's debut solo studio album Floating on a Dream, which was released on May 20th, was released on February 15, 2022. Shooter Jennings, a country musician, produced the album. On November 12, 2021, Kaplan's lead single "First Place I Go" was released. "All Is Well" featuring singer Joy Williams was released on the album's announcement on February 15, 2022.
