Kang Dae-sung (Hangul: 강대성;; born April 26, 1989), better known by his stage name Daesung and his Japanese stage name D-Lite, is a South Korean singer, actor and television personality who made his musical debut in 2006 as a member of the South Korean boy band Big Bang under the record label YG Entertainment.

He debuted as a solo artist in South Korea with the number one trot song "Look at Me, Gwisoon" in 2008.

Since the inception of the Gaon Digital Chart in 2010, Daesung achieved two Top 10 songs, the digital single "Cotton Candy" and "Wings" from the Big Bang album Alive (2012).In 2013, he released his first solo album in Japan, D'scover, under the label YGEX and embarked on his first Japanese tour.

The following year, he released two more albums, D'slove and his first chart-topper, Delight.

D'slove Tour made him the first Korean soloist to gather over 100,000 fans for two Japanese tours in a row.

In 2017, he held his first solo Japanese dome tour, performing for over 150,000 people from four shows, and released his second number one album, D-Day, that made him the second foreign male solo artist to have two consecutive number one albums in Japan after Michael Jackson.In South Korean television, he was a part of the main cast of the top-rated comedy show Family Outing from 2008 to 2010, the musical drama series What's Up (2011), and was one of the hosts of the talk show Night After Night (2010).

Daesung enrolled at Kyung Hee University in 2008 to study post-modern music. He is a devout Christian, and he has said that his faith was a big influence in re-evaluating his life after a car accident in 2011.

Life and career

Kang Dae-sung was born in Seoul's Itaewon neighborhood, and at an early age he began to dream about becoming a singer. To overcome his parents' stymies of the idea, he went back to his parents' house for a week to get his permission. After winning in an audition, Kang continued to work on his dream and was recruited as a trainee by YG Entertainment. Daesung, his first name, appeared on stage, and he was paired with five more trainees (G-Dragon, T.O.P, Taeyang, Seungri, and Hyunseung) later on to complete the boy band Big Bang's development. The group's formation was chronicled on television, but before their official debut, Jang was scrapped, and Big Bang debuted in 2006 with five members. Big Bang made their first appearance as a band at the YG Family's 10th Anniversary concert on August 19, 2006.

Big Bang's debut, with their first studio album, Big Bang Vol.1 - Since 2007, the band's debut was huge, with sales of over 100,000 copies. Daesung was diagnosed with voice chord nodules, increased sociophobia, and stage fright shortly after the launch of Big Bang. Nevertheless, he was able to recover with the help of a fellow musician and label mate, Gummy, who had been previously diagnosed with the condition.

Daesung released his first trot single "Look at Me, Gwisoon" (Korean: rr: Nal Bwisun) in 2008. He claimed that although he was worried about damaging the company's reputation, he wanted to try something new. He appeared on Family Outing, a SBS reality variety show, as a permanent cast member. He made his musical debut in the Korean version of Cats, portraying Rum Tum Tugger. Daesung later became a host for MBC's music program Show. Seungri, a fellow member of Music Core, is a member of Music Core.

In 2009, Daesung unveiled his second trot single titled "Big Hit" (Korean: rr: Daebakiya). He was also supposed to accompany bandmate Seungri in the autobiographical musical Shouting. However, Daesung was injured in a car accident right before the musical began in August 2009. On the Pyeongtaek Express highway, Gyeonggi Province, he was returning to Seoul from a filming location for Family Outing. According to YG Entertainment, the van hit the guardrail while it was skidding in the pouring rain. Daesung, who was in the seat, fractured his nose and suffered minor bruises on his face and arms, as well as minor bruises on his face and arms. Daesung fully recovered and returned to Big Bang in October 2009, performing at the Dream Concert for the first time.

Daesung would then hold four solo concerts in Kobe and Tokyo to promote the album. However, an additional 21 concerts in 17 towns were added, taking the total number to 25 concerts in 18 towns to 25. The D'scover Tour opened at World Memorial Hall in Kobe on March 23 and culminated in a crowd of 100,000 people at Yokohama Arena in Kanagawa on June 18.

Daesung will hold a second tour in Japan in February 2014, according to YGEX. On June 11, 2014, the D'slove 2014 in Japan tour began at the Yokohama Arena in Tokyo. Rainy Rainy, a digital album by the same name, was released on the first day to celebrate his tour's start. The album debuted on Japan's iTunes charts.

On July 16, Daesung unveiled his second Japanese album, D'slove. The album debuted at No. 1 on the charts. On the day of launch, Oricon's Daily Album Chart, number 1 was sold out of 10,090 copies. Taro Hakase's track "I Love You" was released as a physical single and debuted in Oricon's Weekly Album Chart as the top five. Daesung's second Japanese tour began in September, visiting 9 towns and attracting a total of 170,000 viewers from 17 shows to promote his album. Daesung has been the first K-pop musician to attract more than 100,000 people to his concert tour for two years in a row.

Delight, Daesung's third Japanese EP, was released on October 19 (Japanese: ). The album contained nine versions of 4 songs, including remakes of his Korean trot singles and cover songs of famous Japanese songs from the 1970s. The two original singers made him a lot of praise. With 65,048 copies sold on the day of its debut, Delight topped the Oricon Daily Albums Chart. The album debuted at No. 1 in the United States, despite its being ranked No. 1. The Oricon Yearly Album Chart has a 79,000-copy sales record, the highest ranking ever achieved by the singer so far.

Daesung will hold a solo concert tour in Japan to thank fans. The concerts were held at Yoyogi National Stadium on January 31 and February 1, 2015, and then on February 10 and 11, then at Osaka-j Hall. Linda Yamamoto, the original singer of the song "Donimo Tomaranai," appeared on Yoyogi on 2nd exhibition.

Daesung will host his first solo dome tour in Japan, dubbed the D-lite Japan Dome Tour 2017 by YGEX on December 2, 2016. On April 15 and 16, the tour began at the Seibu Prince Dome and ended in the Kyocera Dome on April 22 and 23. The tour attracted 150,000 visitors to the two cities. Daesung will embark on a national hall tour called DNA Show Vol. 1, with 28 shows set to begin on August, according to YGEX. Over 350,000 people registered to buy tickets to his shows, which was six times larger than the expected, and eleven additional shows were revealed, totaling 39 concerts in 18 towns, making it his country's biggest tour. A total of 88,000 people has been confirmed to attend.

On April 12, 2017, D-Day, his second Japanese EP, named D-Day, was released simultaneously in South Korea and Japan. The album featured seven songs written and composed by top Japanese musicians, including Ayaka, Hata Motohiro, Kameda Seiji, and Daesung himself. According to the Oricon Albums Chart and the Billboard Japan Albums chart, D-Day debuted at number one on the Oricon Albums Chart and on the Billboard Japan Albums chart. Daesung appeared on a Japanese band Dreams Come True's official cover album, "The Direction of My Smiling Face"), which was released in 1990. On October 12, 2017, he also released Delight 2, which featured three covers and one original track. Following its introduction, the EP debuted at number of Japanese online music stores. Due to its success, it was announced that Delight 2 would be released in a physical form on December 20 with seven new tracks. The EP debuted on Oricon at number three, with 45,267 copies sold as a result.

Daesung began his two-year military service in Hwacheon, Gangwon Province, as an active duty soldier. On November 10, 2019, he and fellow Big Bang member Taeyang were discharged.

According to a newspaper published on July 25, 2019, a building in Gangnam that Daesung bought in 2017 before his military enlistment was announced was operating an unlawful entertainment company. On the next day, Daesung released an apology statement and said he was unaware of it because he started his military service right after buying the house, and that if court action was taken against tenants who broke intolerable conduct, including the landlord of the house, will be taken against landlords. All potential charges against him were dropped as a result of a lack of evidence and legitimate knowledge in the investigation as of January.

In 2020, Daesung unveiled a YouTube channel, but it was discovered in March 2021. "D'splay" on YouTube is a play.
