Kirstin Taylor "Kirstie" Maldonado (born May 16, 1992) is an American singer and songwriter who is a founding member of the Pentatonix group.

Maldonado has released seven studio albums, received three Grammy Awards, and has sold over six million albums worldwide, as a team with Pentatonix. Maldonado debuted her solo career on May 19, 2017 with the single "Break a Little" under the moniker Kirstin (stylized as kirstin; not trademark), along with her debut EP L O V E, released on July 14, 2017.

Lauren in Kinky Boots was also on her Broadway debut in 2018.

Early life and education

Kirstin Taylor Maldonado was born in Fort Worth, Texas, on May 16, 1992. Angelica Maldonado's mother, Angelica Maldonado, is of Spanish and Italian descent, though Michael Cisneros, her father, is of Mexican descent. She was raised in Arlington, Texas, by her mother. When she first expressed her desire to be a singer, she was only five years old. She sang at her mother's wedding reception and then encouraged her mother to enroll her in voice lessons at eight years old. She has also worked in several local productions and has performed in many shows. Maldonado met Mitch Grassi, a prospective Pentatonix member, through the local theater group.

Maldonado attended Holy Rosary Catholic School and later Martin High School. She met Scott Hoying at Martin High School, with whom she and Grassi would later form Pentatonix. The three friends formed a cappella trio and gained notice for their renditions of famous songs in their classes. She graduated from Martin High School in 2010 and enrolled in the University of Oklahoma, where she studied musical theatre on a full-ride scholarship as a National Hispanic Scholar. Kappa Kappa Gamma joined Kappa Kappa Gamma during her time in college. She left before finishing her degree in order to create Pentatonix.

Personal life

Jeremy Lewis, a young singer and entrepreneur, first met Maldonado in August 2013 through The Sing-Off, and the two met in October of the same year. They first met in Paris, France, on May 29, 2016. In 2017, the couple postponed their wedding to tackle such unstated "problems," before calling it off in October.

Maldonado is currently in a relationship with freelance filmmaker and photographer Ben Hausdorff. They have been dating since 2018 and have collaborated on different Pentatonix projects. Maldonado and Hausdorff reported in March 2022 that they were expecting their first child. Their daughter was born on June 28, 2022, on June 28, 2022.

Career

Maldonado was approached by her high school friend Scott Hoying in 2011 who wanted to put together a team for NBC's cappella tournament The Sing-Off was held in 2011. Maldonado decided to join the club, which also included Mitch Grassi, another of her high school classmates. Pentatonix, Avi Kaplan, and Kevin Olusola were among the pentatonix group formed together, as Pentatonix, a cappella group. The team appeared in and eventually won the third season of The Sing-Off. Since then, they have released many albums and EPs, attracted 13 million YouTube followers, over 2 billion YouTube views, and visited the world. Pentatonix's Daft Punk medley received their first Grammy for Best Arrangement, Instrumental, or A Cappella on February 8, 2015. Pentatonix won their second Grammy in the same category on February 15, 2016, including their rendition of "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy" which was featured on their holiday album, "That's Christmas to Me." Pentatonix received their third Grammy for Best Country Duo/Group Performance on February 12, 2017, which featured Dolly Parton.

Maldonado performed "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" at the World Dog Awards in January 2016 in honor of the dogs who have performed Toto from the classic story about The Wizard of Oz.

The Voctave group in February 2016, a cappella group, released the film "Disney Love Medley" which featured Maldonado and her then-fiancé Jeremy Lewis. Maldonado and Lewis perform "I See the Sun" from Tangled, "You'll Be in My Heart," from Tarzan and "Go the Distance" from Hercules, with Voctave's members providing the backing vocals. In May 2016, Maldonado, Grassi and Hoying appeared in a Bones episode.

Maldonado's first solo album, "Break a Little," was released on May 19, 2017. L O V E, her debut EP, was announced on July 14, 2017. The EP debuted at number one on the iTunes Pop Albums Chart, ranked no. 1 on the iTunes Pop Albums Chart. Maldonado appeared Lauren in the musical Kinky Boots in 2018 on Broadway, alongside singer Jake Shears and comedian Wayne Brady.
